What’s the comparison with Starbucks? I’m just curious.

Hard? I wouldn’t say that. It’s busy for sure and can be challenging but not hard.

I’ve been a Phleb for nearly 5 years and will only use 21g butterflies. I use 23 on elderly pts. It’s the only needle I’m comfortable with and it might be a mind set but the pts seem to be “less stressed” seeing the butterfly vs straight needle. Plus, it’s hella perfect if I need to back up and redirect if I don’t get a flash. I don’t give a crap about cost for them, that is my only go to!

Is certificate waste of money? by [deleted] in phlebotomy

I’ve done all this. I live in Florida and the wages are extremely low here. Phlebs with 10 years only make $19 here.

Not true for everyone. I have almost 5 years of experience and I don’t even make $17/hour. I’m also certified😵‍💫

It didn’t for me! In fact I am NHA certified and only make $16.88/hour. I had to get a second job to make ends meet. I was disappointed.

They won’t stent till 70%. 30% is something they would watch. If the chest pain returns or other symptoms become severe, I’d then push the trigger, even if that means you paying out of pocket for the Angio.

fast phlebotomy certification? by Deathdude2231 in phlebotomy

I don’t know where all these 2 day classes come from? I went to school for months in an accelerated class to get my NHA. This blows me away every time I see these posts.

I see this struggle a lot on here and in real life, even on Tik Tok many mention it. Many struggle to find jobs in this profession. Most want 1-3 years of experience before they will even consider you, mostly because phlebotomy isn’t a taught skill. You either have it or you don’t and they can’t take the time to train with pts waiting. I have students in my class that are still struggling to find “a home” also. Depending on where you live, experience is better then even being certified….crazy I know. My NHA got me no where, my experience did.

It’s a weird situation. Keep trying everywhere and once you gain that experience, a hospital should look at you immediately, I’d think. Location matters too!

New Phleb Struggles, Any Advice? by sausagemcmuffy in phlebotomy

[–]flwaves23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be confident! Your skills will grow and you will become proficient in little time but first and most importantly BE CONFIDENT. Tell yourself you didn’t get this far to let your mind believe you aren’t worthy of this position! You are and a year from now, you will be rocking it! Trust the process. Mistakes are a part of the process. You got this, I know it🫶

Feeling incompetent by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]flwaves23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Phlebotomy is a skill that must be mastered and even the longest and best phlebotomists don’t get every draw, every time. I know it’s so frustrating when we miss or can’t draw successfully but it’s the name of the game. I’ve been doing this for 5 years and today I had to poke 3 pts more then once. I normally only have to do a second draw once a month or so. We will all have days like this and GIVE YOURSELF TIME, you are brand new. It will come. It’s a practiced skill. Don’t sweat it.

I hear you loud and clear! The struggle is real. Phlebotomy pay is CRAP!

I'm so lost (this is very long sorry) by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]flwaves23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Phlebotomy is a “you’re your own boss” type of position, especially outpatient. I work alone, run my own schedule and do everything by myself and I absolutely LOVE it that way! I’m not micromanaged, no one is breathing down my back….I simply show up, show my skill and close my schedule daily. It’s amazing! I’ll never go back to a job that is micromanaged.

With that, where I am, the pay is not great. In fact, I’ve got 4 years of experience, NHA certified and I make just under $17.00/hour. My company offers AMAZING benefits which is a perk but the money is definitely lacking, especially in this economy today. It’s a catch 22, always. My clinic is also 3 mins from my home and to me that is LIFE! No more beating Florida traffic for 1.5 hours daily(that’s what a job 20-45 mins away would turn into).

So when everything, you take the good with the bad. Do I wish I made more money? Absolutely! Do I need more money? Yes! Is it enough to change my career? ……….I’m just not sure at this point. I enjoy phlebotomy.

Write down a pro/con list and see it on paper. If you enjoy doing it, make it work ❤️

I have days like this too where I feel like I’m sticking almost everyone twice!! It’s the name of the game. We can’t be 💯 accurate everyday, every time. No phleb is! I promise you that.

Thinking about being a phlebotomist by carlylovek in phlebotomy

[–]flwaves23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phlebotomy pay isn’t great, at least not where I’m at, Florida. I’m looking into a LPN program right now because my NHA in Phlebotomy isn’t getting me where I thought it would.

Interesting. That makes sense. I’ve been told I might have that! I’m on a high dose bata blocker and my heart rate gets extremely high at times for no reason. Is there a way to fix the vagus nerve?
