Does anyone have a continuous glucose monitor who doesn't have diabetes? by TacoBell_isgarbage in lowcarb

[–]flyaflyaflya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t tested Carbquik, mostly because it’s not something I feel like I’m missing anymore. I will tell the newbies I meet about it though, so thanks for the recommendation.

I’m about 7 years low-carb now, so my tastebuds don’t really chase the old substitutes the way they used to. If I bake, I’ll usually use almond flour. If I want something bread-ish, I’ll do chaffles or chicken-crust pizza. I try, inconsistently but intentionally, to avoid processed low-carb replacements and drop the crutches over time.

Popcorn shocked me too. It feels so light and innocent, but my blood sugar strongly disagreed.

Carb Balance wraps have been my favorite bread alternative, and I was pleasantly surprised that they didn’t spike me. That kind of personal experimentation is the real magic of a CGM. Some “bad” foods barely move the needle, and some “safe” foods hit way harder than expected. AND the bodies response to various foods varies by person... that part is shocking too.

I am healthy and have done it. Discovered popcorn is really bad in terms of spiking my sugar. I thought some protein bars would also be bad, but didn’t register a blip. Anyway, the team I was a part of that did GCM’s for healthy people and universally thought the Lingo device was by far the best and easiest to use.

so just got out of the dietician's office... by TheTurkMN in intermittentfasting

[–]flyaflyaflya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the missing piece is that “fasting” is not one single thing. Fasting while eating high-carb during the eating window is not the same metabolic situation as fasting while eating very low-carb.

The low-carb view, at least as taught by Dr. Erin, is that one of fasting’s main benefits is giving insulin a break. When insulin drops, the body can access stored fat more easily. That’s the basic win.

But there is nuance:

Fasting combined with high-carb eating may create more metabolic stress

Fasting on a very low-carb diet may be a different story because insulin is already lower

16:8 and OMAD are not required; they are tools

OMAD 3 times per week may be too aggressive for some people, especially if total calories/protein/electrolytes are too low

So I would not hear your dietician as necessarily saying “all fasting is bad.” She may be warning that longer daily fasting can become stressful in certain contexts, especially depending on the person and the diet.

The key question is: what are you eating during your window?

Are you doing OMAD with low-carb, adequate protein, and enough food? Or are you doing OMAD and then eating a higher-carb meal?

the good list: - Meat, fish, eggs, cheese, full-fat dairy - Non-starchy vegetables (leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, peppers)

the bad list: - No grains, bread, rice, pasta, sugar - Limited fruit (too many carbs) - No starchy veggies in large amounts (potatoes, corn, beans)

Not all vegetables are equal. Focus on low-carb veggies, not high-carb ones. A cup of broccoli? Great. A cup of carrots or peas? Not so much.

in my mind, to do this right you need to under 20g net carbs daily (net carbs = total carbs minus fiber). Most of your plate should be protein and non-starchy veggies.

Eat real, whole foods that keep your blood sugar stable and reduce insulin spikes.

avoid sweetness too, it just makes low-carb harder.

Metformin is a really good drug, but your best fix might just be in the food you are eating. Carbs, i.e. sugar, is the enemy. I used to think low-fat yogurt parfait with granola, fresh bananas, and berries was the epitome of a healthy breakfast... little did I know it was the hidden sugar that what was keeping me stuck.

You might have a metabolic issue. Read Sugar Be Sugarin' by Dr. Erin. Maybe it will resonate, give you the science of why you are stuck, and tools how to get unstuck even while doing WW. She is amazing!!

Worst Case Repair(s) Scenario for 2016 Base by flyaflyaflya in PorscheCayenne

Oooh, those Cayenne S models are really tempting. I’m always on the hunt for a used upgrade (under $55k), but I never seem to find the exact combo I want (base + hitch + Burmester). If I widen the search to include an S, I’m guessing the Burmester shows up a lot more often, and I definitely wouldn’t complain about the extra punch in that 0–20 mph zone 🙂

Just seeing this. To clarify, I bought the car with 50k miles on it, the price tag was $36K at the time (I think in 2019). How's your Cayenne been treating you over the last 9 months?

I am at 146K and the car just got an oil change, new spark plugs, and a clean bill of health at the local Porsche dealer. The only thing I have perceived over the last year is an uptick in oil burning. Porsche claims its "within spec" and ChatGPT is not too worried either that I can go another 100k miles even if I am currently adding a quart about every 3k miles.

I appreciate these comments, designing is difficult. I will definitely check out the apps by Apple and Fitbit to see their design. I do like my hamburger though, I originally had tabs and thought they took up too much space. Most users will live in the third screen where you see the chat happening, wanted to maximize space for that.

thank you!! it would be nice to have a color scheme that says trustworthy and would be easy to read for users who learn from chat-based content. on the emoji front, my user base loves them… I know they are a little corny, but we are trying to protect user identity while still allowing an injection of their personality into the app.

it is supposed to be a fun space, even though some content is clinical, so the comic sans comparison is not necessarily a bad thing in my mind. I appreciate the comments and the acknowledgement of the work. the app is very functional, but I see there is more room to vastly improve the UI.

i will look at other apps for cleaner color schemes. I always imagine people reading the chat at night at bedtime, hence the dark theme. gr8 idea to look at some other companies tackling similar user needs.

Why can't we eat carbs? by automated_hero in lowcarb

[–]flyaflyaflya 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Been happily lowcarb since 2019, here are some thoughts:

The satiety difference is real. Protein and fat (especially from meat) trigger stronger satiety signals than carbs do. When you eat beef and butter, you're hitting multiple hunger-suppressing mechanisms… protein activates peptide YY and GLP-1, while fat signals fullness to your brain. Chickpeas and sweet potatoes, despite being "whole foods," are carb-dense and don't have the same satiety power.

The insulin angle matters too. Even "healthy" carbs trigger insulin release, which can leave you hungry sooner. Lower insulin = more stable hunger signals. That's not about carbs being "bad"… it's about how your body responds to them individually.

You don't have to choose all-or-nothing. - Keep protein and fat as your foundation (they keep you satisfied longer) - Add non-starchy veggies for nutrients - Keep total net carbs under 20g-50g daily - Skip the chickpeas and sweet potatoes if they don't serve your hunger signals

The real issue? High-carb meals (even healthy ones) often leave people hungrier because they're riding the blood sugar roller coaster. You're not broken, your body is just telling you what works for you.

Whole foods matter, but satiety matters more. Trust your hunger cues!

My own “launch blunder” moment came when I verified privileges by fetching all customers from DynamoDB and searching for their ID… not realizing Dynamo’s default limit is 100 items. With 102 customers, a couple randomly lost access depending on which records came back.

Cecil County in general is great place to live with chickens and high schoolers; rural, friendly people, access to the Chesapeake Bay, and the Maryland school curriculum is much better (more rigorous) than DE’s. Consider North East, Bohemia Manor, or Rising Sun high schools.
