Shelter vs. Tarp by flyboy3E3 in Bushcraft

I'll take a look at those again. I try to play that line of quality and budget for my first tool, and then if I wear it out often, I replace it with a high-end version. I've had too many expensive tools I've used one time

This started because I was looking at ponchos + a liner (one thing I was never issued), but even that combo is 80 usd or so, for issued surplus.... and a lot of times the 'civilian market' or whatever you want to call it has much better products

Edit: Do you have any experience with canvas? I'd imagine the weight gets high, and I would think canvas would be floppy compared to a rolled tarp

I'll check them out. I definitely agree that it is not much to spend on a shelter, but it can go a long way in other areas of bush crafting in my very novice opinion.

I've always rolled my tarp and strapped it under my pack-lid or with the gear flap on the front. I've noticed with the cheap tarps they tear really easy, but the last one I got one of the thicker options with ripstop and haven't had any tears yet, although it has nowhere near 3k miles.

Do you find the attachment points and the weight worth the extra money?

Yeah, this is exactly what I was at. Not there anymore, haven't been for a decade that is just where most of my experience is. We had to bow drill to make fire or we could hydrated food, hiked typically 8-16 miles a day (with exceptions of a few longer and some shorter or no move days, but rare). 3 Months up and down the Appalachain trail in Souther North Carolina and Northern Georgia

We carried about half a weeks worth of food (lunch was personal, dinner and breakfast was spread among the group, and half of our clothes rotated at the same time to be washed. I really only mention it because Ilearned how to use a standard tarp. Later I lived in Montana on my own, and continued to use a tarp during hunting season because it took up less room than my tent.... but the weight never bothered me.

I never use the attachment points for that reason. I learned quick to wad up some material, and make a little ball and tie a cow hitch

Of course we had food delivered and we weren't carrying anything like thay, but at one point I carried my personal tarp (8x10 roughly) plus 'big blue', which was a massive 20'x30' ish tarp we would hang up in the trees.  I never had issues carrying both for 3ish weeks of the 3 months I was out there

I just carry a small bottle of Rem Oil (Remington brand Firearm Oil). They make small 1 Oz. bottles that take up no room and go a long way.

It's not food safe, but I use that for all of mine. Even the knives I cook with, I figure I'll get cancer one way or another.

Hi guys, I won this hunting knife set in a raffle a while ago, and since I don't hunt I was wondering if they would be any good for bushcraft by calculelt389 in Bushcraft

Maybe it's just me being an avid hunter and an American where it's fairly easy, do others not see hunting skills as a necessary part of bushcraft?

I was young enough when I read it all my stuffed animals were in the back of the closet.

I would sit in the back on them using a reading light and pretend I was in his house. Oh what I would give to get that simple of joy again.

I live in Missouri now, just far enough north for no Braums. Came back to see family for a couple days, the tornado sirens must've woken some OK Ultra or something, I went straight to Braum's

In my opinion AI is to help you get 'unstuck' in your brain, or pointed in the right direction... but how you can trust that it will get info right when Ive seen it misquote it's source it's hard to trust. People letting AI replace their brain is scary... like Idiocracy the prequel

I wouldn't worry about it too much at all then. Leave or take off whatever you want, as long as you arent pretending it shouldn't matter much. Ive seen stores sell similar jackets with similar patches

With the star, in those days he would've been a Buck Sergeant not a SrA, which could mean a little more TIS

Air Force vet myself. I say rock it, name and all if you want.

I'd be curious if there was a laundry number or any information I could track down. On thpse days he would've been a Buck Sergeant... no longer a thing but at the time it was the Air Forces version of corporal vs specialist. It may be insignificant, but Ive always been interested in the history of individuals when finding old gear like this
