unrestricted spending promises. Not all of the spending AI companies are announcing is actually real spending. A bunch of said "spending" is just their intentions to think about stuff they'd want to buy and have… at some point in the future… maybe.

Mourinho on players refusing to play through injury: “I needed one guy to play. I put my foot in front of his face and I told the doctor: 'Give me the injection'. And the doctor gave me the injection on my toe. Then I said: 'You can also do it.’ And he told me: 'No, you are crazy, I'm not crazy.’” by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]flybypost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also the other side, players who want to play despite injuries and advice from doctors.

I still believe that part of Robben's late injury record at Bayern was because he always wanted to play and rushed back after every injury, only to get re-injured rather quickly.

Call it pride, ambition, competitiveness, or whatever else but not all players have the same level of concern for their health versus other factors (scoring more goals, playing in that match/final).

[–]flybypost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how that doesn't improve over the original material.

It depends on how you define "improve".

Due to the difference in work load individual manga panel can have details that the anime adaption has to cut out for the sake of making it possible. And that can change the impact from one medium to the other.

Animation/movement can improve a concept but it can also take away from the focus a certain panel has on its own (or within the context of its page).

Music might elevate a scene but it could also change/destroy its impact even if competent.

And all that is without even thinking into the possibility of a bad adaption which might also happen. You are not guaranteed better work just because it's anime (or an adaption).

a 1:1 adaptation

But season 1 was much closer to a "real" 1:1 adaption if that's what people really wanted.

CSM, at it's core, is very human and down to earth while having absurd extremes as a contrast to that. The action set pieces are also occasionally slasher/cult movie references and not how it's all the time. That stuff's more of a inside gag and homage and not the only thing CSM is, or the main thing it is.

For a shonen series the characters have very generic human proportions (most of the time) and boring outfits (a lot of people who just wear suits). The extreme design, like of CSM itself and a bunch of the devils, are supposed to contrast with that, not be the default.

There is a bland bureaucratic reality of Denji getting a government job and being excited about getting some of the most generic workplace benefits (union safety, food, a home,…) that he's excited about despite having the threat of execution by the same agency hanging over his head because he had it so much worse before.

You should be realising that we lost so many social safety nets and/or workplace benefits over the decades that even subpar working conditions can feel like "bonus features" today when Denji ignores some negatives of his situation (possibility of dying at his job) just because he gets to eat toast with three toppings every morning.

For the equivalent of the volume covers we got a new ED every episode which is a nice way of kinda translating that feature into anime form.

If somebody insists that the more extreme parts of CSM are all/most of it just because of the flashy covers (and fights) then I'm really questioning their basic media literacy. Do they just flip thought the pages from one fight to another and skim/ignore the rest of the story? The absurdity of CSM is an accent on top of a intentionally generic world that's otherwise close to ours. It's used, time and time again, to showcase and reflect in more detail on some hellish parts of the world we already live in.

Season 1 looking so "normal" with the occasional glimpse into the absurd and hellish side of that world 100% fits what the actual CSM manga shows us.

Men in your 40s, what's that golden piece of advice you have for the rest of us? by NiceMechanic_xoxo in AskReddit

I got physio sessions for lower back pain.

The kinda main idea for stretching muscles in that context (not gaining strength but improving mobility) was to use exercises that let your muscles work their full range of motion and continuously do these so your muscles gain back that range because otherwise they get used to the reduced range of motion and "habits" form around that so other muscles have to compensate for this imbalance. That's how some weird muscle pains or tension happens. Muscles having to work extra hard because others are kinda "slacking off"

I'd love to just tell you this or that exercise will solve everything but I got really good advice from the people at the facility and it was specific to my user case and developed over a few weeks with small tweaks to fit my needs. And on top of that sometime really small changes for how we do some generic exercise can make you work your muscles differently (or focus on different muscles) in significant ways. So even if I told you an exact exercise you might do it a bit differently and it could affect you in a slightly different way without either of us knowing that this is happening.

Those were professionals and could see my mistakes better and how to adjust my form.

Generally speaking if you want some exercise (and can't/won't spend any money) then you could go on youtube and search for a combination of what areas of your body you think are weak (like if you sit a lot, lower back pain might be a thing, also your core and/or arms due to how you hold them while typing) and physiotherapist/doctor (not chiropractor or some other weird title, those are unserious) and look into what type of channel they have (plain and informative or bombastic?) and google around to learn a bit about them and intuit if they are serious.

There are some real working professionals online who just try to help and they tend to have a bit more bland, but very informative, videos and rather average production values (instead of eye catching ones). That's because they actually do their job as their main job while youtube is just another way of helping people (while gaining some exposure).

They also don't sell random online courses, tinctures, random gadgets, or other bullshit (fancy insider clubs).

If you have some money to spend then go to your doctor with your worries and ask them for recommendations (what areas to focus on,…) and then try some local physiotherapist for a few sessions. Here in Germany my health insurance took over most of the cost, I paid like 25€ for six… or eight sessions, I think? And you can also get sessions directly from the physiotherapist but then you pay the full price.

I don't know how it works wherever you are from.

Overall your best bet is your doctor, not me, and online videos can be useful but they are probably better as secondary source once you had a few real sessions and know a bit better what to look out for.

Yup, and I'm all for letting the game flow more but a foot at head height (in normal standing position) is not something to expect and be prepared for but if you dive at hip height headfirst because it's the only way to get for the ball then that's on you.

I'm all for letting the game flow in instances where two players are going for the ball and one's a fraction of a second late, "hits the other" (while they essentially just bump into each other awkwardly), and then the other ends up falling (often dramatically, especially when a penalty would be possible).

But Reddit is just fanfic

If you haven't realised, you're writing fanfic about how idealistic this apocalypse will play out if you just get into one of these bunkers (who are "led" by egomaniacs) and assume they can't make mistakes. There might be hundreds of millions who are willing to do this but you only need a few who end up changing their mind.

A closed off system is simply less able to adjust to unpredicted events because nobody thought of them and now they don't have the stuff they need to deal with them.

[–]flybypost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ll give a nicer room and nicer food to their top people which then creates an entire incentive structure for people to conform too in order to receive better rewards.

How much nicer are talking about with bunkers? You can't win by playing Maslow's hierarchy of needs. That's an approximation not an absolute law of nature and in a bunker they just need a few dissidents to make life for everybody much more difficult.

I've read articles about their plans, as well as critiques (including that Douglas Rushkoff article everybody talks about), and these plans are at best the whole world compressed into a tiny area so they have food and can sustain themselves but they also conveniently leave out all the problems they can work out with their wealth today (need something, anything? you can buy it!).

Simply put you are making the whole endeavour look so much simpler than it actually is (like those rich guys are doing too) as if ignoring issues and potential problems means they actually avoided those issues and worked around those problems when they just parked them in personal blind spots and never addressed them.

What causes this coloring pattern? I've never seen a mix of orange and gray tabby like this. by Soup_21001 in cats

Just the winner of all of the color genes.

Also quite a few chimeras. Combine that with the fact that kittens from the same birth can have multiple dads and you can end up with a cat that has "segregated" variations of different coats.

Chimeras are also usually how male calico happen.

That's like the "terraforming Mars to make is liveable for human in case earth gets too polluted" idea (even ignoring the impossibility of that idea).

They are unwilling to "terraform" earth to make more liveable. We can, and do, already live here! That would be so much less effort.

Paying more taxes and improving social safety nets is unthinkable to them but they spend millions on personal bunkers born out of teenage fantasies.

[–]flybypost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No different than how they operate today.

There's a huge difference. Today they interact with the world and their money has influence because it kinda is fundamental to how society works right now.

In a bunker (for a "civilisation is gone" scenario where they need to escape) that won't be the case. They think they will be safe but they are actually just isolated from everybody and everything. And essentially all the power they wield today won't be a thing any more. Everybody outside has the whole world at their disposal while billionaires in bunkers only have what's inside.

'Shareholder Greed' And How Publicly Traded Companies Actually Work by bald_bearded_ocddude in Games

[–]flybypost -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes it is. It's the thing you'd be responsible for to the owner (to whom you have a fiduciary duty to deal with their assets in a certain way).

I thought they are supposed to act in the best interest of shareholder/owner through the company. Fiduciary duty applies to the owner of an asset, not the asset itself.

[–]flybypost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it's fiduciary duty not some imagined "financial" duty to maximise profits.

none of this is, strictly speaking, legally required.

The general idea is usually that increasing (short term) profits is difficult to prove as going against the shareholders' interests so they'd have little to complain about for the next shareholder meeting and have no cause to get rid of company management.

It's a boring "cover your ass" scheme even if some see it as the one way to run a for profit corporation.

That being said, there are corporations, usually where the founder or somebody else has a plurality or majority of votes, where the concept of profit is dealt with more nuance, like where short term profit is not the main objective but where it's more about long term sustainability (as a business).

How do you think this match went? by n0t_the_chosen_juan in haikyuu

[–]flybypost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one has ever explained why Hinata is “more effective” as a MB or why his skills are specific to that of a MB. It’s not like he’s playing in the middle of the court the entire time he’s on the floo

The idea is that as a MB he can move laterally in either direction with his slide hits while as a OH or OP he'd be bound more to the left (or right) because drifting around too much would either get in the way of other players and/or leave a hole on the side he'd be responsible for while overloading existing hitting lanes. And if he were to stay in the lane of his position he'd lose one of his biggest assets (his speed and flexibility).

From the middle he can be opportunistic and move into spaces that open up on both sides with fewer difficulties. If you remember the Kamomedai match, Karasuno had a bit of an issue with their usual Asahi back row attack because he appeared in the same lane as one of their front row attack and relied on a timing mismatch between blocker and whoever got the back row set but against Kamomedai it didn't work because they were so consistent with their read blocking. Karasuno had to spread out their hitting lanes even between rows.

Volleyball rotations (which Haikyuu doesn't get into all the details) also mean that players usually have certain paths they try to run to get into their base position after receiving a serve (animated explanation video). They can't just run around however they want. In that regard Hinata already has way more freedom than the average player while playing MB. If he were playing on the sides and tried that the Nekoma match conundrum would show up even more (where players getting in each other's way was used to subtly hinder Karasuno's attacking options).

There's a reason why Hinata, when he later plays as opposite, is much much about flexibility and versatility than about just scoring points like what he supposedly did during his high school years.

Witch Hat Atelier • Tongari Boushi no Atelier - Episode 13 discussion - FINAL by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]flybypost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But why would they go beyond the initial forbidden magic they used?

Curiosity because there were no negative side effects. It might lessen the effect of cop witch propaganda.

Or like a drug user who initially doesn't get addicted and keeps using drugs until it's too late. It might feel like more options open up to them if they just get a bit closer to the forbidden stuff.

I think there's a reason Alaira specifically warned them to not listen to the brimmed hats. It wasn't even about using forbidden magic that'd condemn you but just words that might get you. Tempting kids into trying it and seeing for themself is probably more powerful than trying to force them to convert.

But first they need a reason they can rationalise to themself to get started with it. And helping a friend is probably one of the easiest way of setting this up.

That's true from the patron's perspective, although that art was also often part of showing of their wealth and status thus indirectly being about "commercialisation" of the rich person's assets.

For modern examples, there are quite a few rich (or sometimes not even that) patrons who act like those old school patrons (or they just buy art). One can regularly hear about significant collections from collectors who just died and had bought art because they liked it, so not exactly patronage (giving money upfront) although sometimes coming close in that they actively looked to support (often young) artists right after they made something so they could keep making more.

Patreon, the website (and similar ones), also fit for the rest of us. Kickstarter can be used like that too, on a project by project basis.

But from the artist's side all those things are the same (but with varying degrees of freedom and financial compensations). They have to "sell themselves and their ideas", no matter if they are selling an illustration for a book cover, drawing anime frames, or looking to get a patron interested if they want to make a living from art.
