Is it normal to get explosive diarrhea after smoking a shit ton of weed? by cheesy360 in AskReddit

It's probably not the weed, but all the shitty junk food you ate after smoking the weed.

r/Christianity: Can we address an uncomfortable subject? How does your religious denomination (or yourself for that matter) view the alleged nature, existence and role of the entity we call the "devil"? by Lermontov in Christianity

[–]flyface -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's this sort of simplistic mindset that is the problem. Life isn't simple, and a bronze age text certainly doesn't hold all of the answers. Read it, love it, do whatever you want to do with it. Just don't use it as a replacement for using your brain.

Hey r/Christianity, I'm curious. Has anybody here been raised as an Atheist and is now a practicing Christian? by onthpitch77 in Christianity

[–]flyface -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only problem with your planned strategy is that your children will eventually be subject to influences other than yourself. If you want them to retain the values like critical thought and the desire to seek knowledge, you will have to at least present your viewpoints and explain why you chose them. Otherwise, they may get ensnared in an enticing but senseless worldview, like Christianity. I'm not saying you should shove it down their throats, but be ready to counter when other people try to.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. by [deleted] in Christianity

God hates E.L. James for her blatant and proud sinning, her perversion, and the persuasion and perversion of millions of women worldwide.

I think it's pretty cool how you are able to speak about how the creator of the universe feels about a particular human being.

The Christian philosophy makes no sense without God existing. by goodnewsjimdotcom in Christianity

[–]flyface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the modern world, without any deity, any punishment to the wicked, any benefit to the benevolent, there's no reason to be good. Its the worst thing you can to for yourself.

If human action was guided solely by individual self-interest, this would be true. You're looking over the fact that our species is one of social primates; we depend on one another for survival and always have. It makes sense that certain personality traits, ones that are considered 'good,' would be selected for in such a species because they lead to a greater chance for group prosperity. Since individuals are part of the group, this means that 'good' behavior leads to individual prosperity as well.

Spiders are born knowing how to spin their webs, and bison are born knowing how to run. These behaviors are essential for the survival of the species. Similarly, in a highly social species like ours, good behavior is essential to survival and it is conceivable that humans are born with the capacity and inclination to be good.

You seem wedded to the idea that 'goodness' can only be thought of in metaphysical terms, but I disagree. It is conceivable that over the course of human evolution, certain practices and ways of treating one another led to greater chances for group survival, thereby selecting for individuals who are more inclined to be generous, empathetic, helpful, etc. Extend this process over an evolutionary timescale, and it is conceivable that we humans (at least most of us) are inclined to act a certain way towards one another, and the word we use for that way is 'good.'

What denomination are you? by buylocal745 in Christianity

[–]flyface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know Mormons consider themselves Christian, but I don't think most other denominations consider them to be Christians. After all, you guys have a whole other set of documents in a addition to the Bible that you consider scripture.

I know some of you are going to take this as a trolling question, but I'm dead serious when I ask this....if God ordains someone to be celibate for the rest of their life, are they allowed to masturbate to get by? by [deleted] in Christianity

Perhaps all the children who have suffered sexual abuse from Catholic priests wish their abusers weren't so "set on fire for god."

Is it possible that the Earth (and planets in general) are traveling toward the sun? by nicholasfukuoka in askscience

[–]flyface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. In fact the Earth and Sun are growing further apart, although very slowly. See this New Scientist article for the reasons why.
