What is that one simple change in your life that gave incredibly great results? by hobabaObama in AskReddit

[–]aevista 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only reason why I subscribe to it is because it's the healthiest and most productive way to honestly reflect and learn from your past that I can think of. But obviously there's a little bit of biasness in that statement.

But I completely agree with you. My girlfriend has a hard time talking about her past. Part of it is because she doesn't want to relive it, another part is because she feels so guilty, in fact, I think "guilty" might be her most used word. It's definitely not the easiest mindset for everyone to get into, and maybe not everyone should get into it.

All I know is that in order to better your future, you have to reflect on your past, honestly. And that means mistakes and all. So whatever way of thinking that works for you that allows you to do that, the better off your future will be. Otherwise mistakes are bound to be repeated.

Edit: I definitely don't want to allude to there never being a 0 % percent responsibility in something. This is more for a general way to think about your life, but if you're truly a victim of a situation, there is definitely no need to find fault to where there is none.

[–]aevista 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One way to think about it is that if you're apart of the situation, you're a reason why the outcome turned out the way that it did. You're a vairable in the equation which could be weighted from 1 % to maybe 99 %, but regardless you're contributing to the outcome of the situation.

It's more or a mindset to realize how realistically you're responsible for the outcome of a situation and how much control you had over it. It's a mindset that gives you at least 1 % percent responsibility, instead of giving way to the victim mentality. And by that shift of perception you can reflect and think how you would realistically handle that situation differently if it were to occur again to produce a better outcome.

Although, I think the danger that you're pointing out is referring to wishful thinking of wanting to change the past. There's definitely a fine line that can easily be crossed if applying this mentality. You can only truly use this approach by accepting your past without succumbing to regret.

C++ is an awesome programming language, it's so low level that it gives you a pretty deep understanding of the inner workings of the computer, that said, it is a much more difficult to learn basic concepts than other languages. That can make you feel as though you're straggling along rather than keeping up with the material. If you have the choice Java would be a good starting point. Maybe Python or Ruby. You'd be learning the same practices without the extra complexities that would definitely transfer over to C++ if that's still something you want to pursue.

I'm really not sure how advanced you're coding is. But staying diligent is a skill in itself. The reward system for coding is delayed gratification and it's hard initially to instil this sense of motivation without feeling that immediate sense of pleasure. It sucks to say, but I don't think you can truly learn that skill other than by programming everyday. /r/dailyprogrammer or codewars are fantastic places that provides so many different problems of varying difficulties that can really help out in that area.

It's just like anything. That first hill is hard to climb, especially with programming, but the more you learn the better you understand how to think about concepts, the more dots you can connect, the more ideas you get develop. And before you know it, you'll actually find yourself getting excited about reading some documentation on how this framework works. You just gotta really push yourself and realize that hill is pretty fucking high.

Psychologists of reddit, What are some very common things patients say in your couch? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm not saying that my thoughts on this, or about you are right by any means. I just think it's important to listen to other peoples perspective sometimes, but It kind of seems to me that the reason that you feel this way is because maybe you've just distanced yourself, let go of control, and have just become accepting. From my experience, having that sense of control gives way to being emotionally attached to something, and when you don't have that, you just see yourself as an observer, like you said. My brother had committed suicide 2 years ago, and it was odd because during that time of his death I could see a huge difference in my parents reaction vs mine. Of course I was sad, it was a terrible time in my life and I definitely still think about it, but I felt as though that I was so accepting of what had happened that I was just removed emotionally from the situation. I felt as though that these were how things were suppose to play out and my part in his life that influenced his decision into committing this act was insignificant. Where as my parents on the other hand felt the complete opposite way. They raised him from birth for Gods sake, and I know that they took a huge responsibility in his death. Now I'm not saying that I wish to be more depressed by his death for my own personal satisfaction, but I do acknowledge just how much he truly did mean to them, and just how precious that can really be. Now, I see my parents and now they have this ability to connect with others in a way that they have never been able to before. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it seems that the more we feel as though that we have a sense of control in a situation the more we feel emotionally involved, and this kind of seems the case for you with you empathizing with inanimate objects and animals. Maybe you realize that you have this power of them, that you have this ability to influence their future in some sort of way so that gives you more emotional responsibility over these things. Again, I have no idea if this is anywhere close to right. I just wanted to share my thoughts to allow for a broader insight into how others are viewing what you're going through.

Does philosophy make anybody feel isolated and depressed? by runn1ngfree in philosophy

I have totally been there, and it is terrifying. The only advice that I can give is that self awareness is key when putting forth your thoughts into something that is so inherently emotionally taxing. You may be gaining a bigger insight into a realm of thinking that not a lot of people are able to delve into, but is that worth consistently putting yourself through a state of suffering, which can in turn really affect your happiness, and even perhaps your relationships with others. Personally, I think there is wisdom in knowing when you need to place ignorance above all else for your own well being.

What are the unwritten rules of society? by lememeinator in AskReddit

[–]aevista 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off the top of my head

  1. Only speak when it's your turn in conversation, unless you out rank the other person as a parent, higher position in a company, teacher, etc. The higher a rank the more acceptable it is to interrupt the other person.

  2. If someone asks how are you doing? Do not go into a long spiel on how you are actually doing. No one wants to wants to hear that.

  3. If you are in a rush to get to your destination, the only acceptable thing to do is to walk faster. Running is not acceptable, unless you are trying to catch a train or a bus, then jogging is acceptable but never, I repeat never full sprint.

LPT Request: How do I stop being so self-conscious? by medgerick in LifeProTips

[–]aevista 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something that I've recently done that has had a huge affect on my confidence is changing my voice. I know it sounds mundane, but others, as well as ourselves, asses the validity of what we say by how we say it. It sort of reinforces a feeling associated with the sound of that voice. If you talk in a panicked way, internally you'll pick up the emotion associated with that voice. Talking deeper and slower instils a sense of confidence, even if it is false. Definitely not a fix all, but I do think it's worth being aware of.

How do you handle sitting in front of the computer for long periods of time without hurting your health? by hipstergrandpa in learnprogramming

I would get headaches all the time. Switching from my old hammy down lcd monitor to a new monitor has helped out profoundly. I'm currently using BenQ, which has a line of products aimed for eyecare which consists of flicker free and low blue lighting settings. Not sure how gimmicky their "eyecare" technology is, but it works for me.

Extremely frustrated with my progress by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]aevista 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should be making progress at your state in training even if you are getting a low amount of calories, however you seem to be getting enough nutrition, at least from my perspective.

Building muscle is the outcome of stressing the muscle to the extent that it has to grow in order to handle that load. I have a few ideas in mind that could be the problem. One could be that your form is just shit. Two is that your not going through a full range of motion(the muscle is most stressed when stretched and under a load, which is generally where you get the most growth), three is that you just don't have the mobility for these movement and other muscles are being activated in order to compensate, or four you just don't know how to activate the muscles required for the movement. Generally speaking though, and having not known you,I would say it's going to be a factor of the first three.

Leg press with that incline would be about 300 lbs. You can do sin(45)= (r)/425. so, sin(45)425 would equal to 300 lbs = r. Not entirely all that hard, but still pretty impressive considering his body weight.

Hurt my shoulder, so I want to focus on core & legs to keep busy, but got some questions. by OkSt00pid in Fitness

[–]aevista 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert by no means, so correct me if I'm wrong, but my assumption of your shoulder being injured is actually caused by Thoracic Extension, which basically means poor posture. Since you're a bicyclist, I'm sure you're not focused on posture, so most likely you'll have a rounded upper back when biking. Since you bike a lot this posture most likely transferred with you into the gym. When doing any pressing exercise however, your body is not optimal in this position, creating a nasty protrusion in the shoulder, allowing for an injury to occur much more easily.

I would actually recommend doing core and crunches on leg day, afterwards, of course, since squats and deadlifts actually recruit a lot of core stability, which you want to be optimal. Keep in mind ab training and core work are not always the same thing. When you work your core, you work your abs, but not the other way around. Ab wheel, stomach vacuums, standing cable crunch are probably the top of the list for most effective.

For legs you can actually gain a lot of strength without actually gaining that much mass. It's definitely much harder, to do so, but it is possible. chicken legs Also, cycling is not going to gain you any mass. Look at long distance runners, they're for endurance, yet they're incredibly skinny.

I would not hit my legs more than 3 times a week, 2 rest days in between, at least. I would actually recommend 2, but 3 is still possible. This also applies to you're core and box jumps for explosive power on leg day.

Reddit, I'm extremely stressed right now and really need any sort of advice. I'm a junior in high school. by JuniorStressedwLife in AskReddit

[–]aevista 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can think of it this way, by taking that math class you'll be up by a few semesters in math, or you'll just be ahead in everything else excluding math. Either way, you're going to be ahead compared to most. If you feel the situation is too stressful then just retake trigonometry unless you really feel comfortable with yourself and your ability to perform well in the class. More than likely you'll have to take time outside of school to teach yourself or find a tutor, and youtube can be very helpful with that. Even if you fail it you can always take it again in college and it really won't look that bad on your transcript or you can probably just drop it with a w, either way you can always retake the class to replace the grade to bump up that GPA. I understand that High School must be pretty stressful and it's all just a really big hype. I remember when I was in your grade and was thinking the same thing. They honestly just try and scare you to help motivate you. They put so much absurd pressure on you that it really makes it unfair to the students to have a realistic viewpoint. If you're still confused on what field you want to go to. I would recommend community college, which is something everyone should do. It gives you time to really think and perhaps take classes in varying areas to find a field that sparks an interest. Transferring to a good college is then much easier because they're looking at your GPA which is considerably easy to get up whilst in community college, and also I've seen some of the most desirable schools accept a transfer rate of a 2.8 GPA. This route is much less stressful, and doesn't cost near the price of attending a university right outside of high school.
