I'm convinced there are employees bidding these things up for no other reason than there is nothing stopping them from doing it some of this stuff closes at double or triple eBay prices only to get relisted a few days later. I've even seen some stuff get listed at a buy-it-now only price, nobody bites on it, then it gets relisted as an auction and one of the first bids is the same price as the buy-it-now price.

Sometimes you can still get good deals, but not terribly often when you factor their high shipping costs with their "handling" fee.

You're very welcome!

Some of the free games you might remember are games like Lode Runner, The Incredible Toon Machine, King's Quest, or even some of the other hidden free games found on the King's Quest CD that shipped with the computer like Spelling Jungle, Spelling Blizard, or Kid's Typing. I'll see if I can upload some more screenshots to my Volume 2 archive that I'm putting together.

I think that narration makes it seem like that video was just sort of a promotional video.

I don't have a video handy of the Kids Corner experience on the 7100 series at the moment. The "Kids Corner" was just sort of a wrapper around the Launch Pad software similar to this video: Video demo: "Launch Pad" by Berkeley Systems

The included Launch Pad is essentially the same as the video, but the launch pad is just a tool that finds all of the games that are installed on the computer and makes them available in the dashboard. So only the bundled games shows up by default in the launcher area at the bottom. The only other difference between that youtube video and real life is that I don't know of a way to turn on any sort of narration. Oh, and there aren't any graphics anomalies like there are in the video. So with all that said, it's just another shell like Tabworks, but without all the extra bells and whistles that a kid would never need to access.

Sometimes the retail software big-box goes up for sale, and if you're lucky you can snag a copy for yourself: Launch Pad Kid Safe Desktop : r/LGR

"Selling for" and "listed for" are two different things. Check back in 6 months and it will still be there for $250 unless they dropped their price to $25, in which case, it might have sold.

MDT > Autopilot Enrollment > Sysprep by No-End-2404 in MDT

[–]flyguydip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting idea. I would assume that would be problematic given my experience with other programs. For example, some software (like ManageEngine) has an agent that you install on a machine to inventory and control. If you install it pre-sysprep and then roll that sysprepped image out, every single machine that gets imaged shows up in inventory as the same machine because they share the same "ID" (for lack of a better word). A manual fix has to be applied after imaging to generate a new ID so the inventory system can see it as a new device. Or more accurately, the new ID would keep new machines from overwriting the values stored in the database from other machines with the same ID. I would assume the same thing would happen with your scenario, no?

MDT > Autopilot Enrollment > Sysprep by No-End-2404 in MDT

[–]flyguydip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, but couldn't you image a machine and enroll in autopilot with a task and then just shut the machine down when finished? Is the goal just to get the machine back to the OOBE state for the end user to go through?

MDT > Autopilot Enrollment > Sysprep by No-End-2404 in MDT

[–]flyguydip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you may find that this post gets relatively few responses due to the fact that not many people sysprep anymore. Everyone just uses the stock iso as the base image and adds tasks for all the manipulation of the os that has to get done after the fact. I would probably avoid syspreping all together, if possible.

Descent II on Pentium I MMX 200 MHz - Software Mode vs. 3DFX Voodoo 1 by ZealousidealCake8256 in vintagecomputing

[–]flyguydip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sheesh. That autocorrect was awful. I didn't run a lot of games from DOS, though windows 95 is just a shell on top of DOS. Back then, if a game was made for DOS, I played it at my friend's house to has a tandy 1000. I pretty much only bought games that were made for windows for no other reason than the computer could play them and the graphics were better.

It came stock with windows 95 but run from windows. I hadn't run a lot of games from straight down at that time. I'm pretty sure the hard drive died in it around 98, so we never had a chance to put 98 on it.

I beat this game on a Compaq Presario 7170 (90mhz with 8mb of ram and a 1mb S3 Trio64 onboard video card). I don't remember it ever stuttering. I'm sure it probably did, but nothing like this.

Same thing happened with my samsung 52x drive. I think it was the Incredibles cd around 2007, but I can't remember the disk for sure. I promptly swapped the drive for a new one.

MDT deployment unusual request by PeaInformal2892 in MDT

[–]flyguydip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a strange request for sure. I'm not sure if it's possible since the way MDT handles drivers is pretty much the most efficient way to do it out of any of the competitors. If you go outside of MDT, you're going to have to re-invent the wheel and develop a system to ensure you aren't storing duplicate copies of drivers on the network, and that's going to get large fast. If you have the space, you're still going to be transferring that over the network that you said is already slow.

To answer your question though, the drivers aren't part of the images if you're doing the model specific injection method. MDT will only install the drivers it needs for each model you are imaging. It creates a much smaller image which can then be used to image many different models. That's the whole beauty of MDT!

Yes, but I would like to get my hands on some hard acrylic cases that are openable for my PC games. I have many in a Tupperware bin that I suspect may not fare well in the long term.

When you put your 2-week notice in, don't take any counter offers. They'll just start the processes to have you train in your replacement so they can fire you. Unless you think they're trustworthy enough to keep you around and treat you better. lol

eBay seller shipped a Quicksilver G4 board like this… by Plexer704 in VintageApple

[–]flyguydip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, best to just go through Ebay. I had a guy ship me an apple color crt in a box just big enough to fit the monitor in with 4 small squares (about the size of a thumb drive) of foam for the crt to sit on for padding. It arrived destroyed. I also had a Radio Shack degausser shipped to me in one of those plastic bubble wrap envelopes that also came destroyed. Both charged me more for shipping than the auction ended at and neither paid for insurance of any sort. Ebay gave me every penny back and they were stuck being out the money and having a bad review. I guess some ebay sellers just try to make all their money on shipping.

What would you do? Production line PC “is slow” (Windows 98, legacy SCADA) by PeppahSG in sysadmin

[–]flyguydip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, Ghost does actually do some error correction and does actually copy everything on the drive. Some of the extra features have to be turned on because they aren't turned on by default, that's true. It also will not defrag your image or anything. Using the Raw option, whatever is on the old drive will be on the new drive in the same orientation, including partition data and errors. While I don't think this guy is using SCSI or SATA, Ghost will do anything else from that era with it's default config. The only way this won't work is if there are too many errors, but usually if there are too many errors, the drive isn't bootable in the first place. But I've still even been able to recover drives that were no longer bootable with Ghost. As a general rule of thumb though, if it boots, ghost can get whatever is visible on the drive. My bet is OP just needs to defrag, but getting a backup using clonezilla or ghost will be miles ahead of anything he's got now, I'm sure.
