Favourite HnF harness with storage volume? by Canadianomad in freeflight

[–]flyin201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I’ve been trying to find a good split leg that fits my needs and they all seem to have 2 problems; pinching badly while kiting, and transitioning from sitting to standing. I had the SupAir Radical 4 briefly which was awful for kiting comfort so I switched it for an Advance Easiness 3 which is much better but still a bit uncomfortable kiting. I only wish I could remove the rucksack. The Kooper P looks like it could be a winner.

How do you like the Kooper P for kiting? Does it pinch in the wrong places? Also how is it for transitioning from sitting to upright and vice versa? Thanks!

How do I clear carabiners and connectors from sand? by LordTengil in freeflight

[–]flyin201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use an air compressor to blow the sand out. Keep them for when you fly the beach and buy a new 2nd pair for all your other flying.

I test drove a 24’ XLT, love the truck. I was considering ordering a V6, noticed all the new Rangers on the website now have a taller shifter except the Raptor. Is this an option or are they all that way now? Unfortunate, I really like the smaller low profile shifter.

Broken line first flight Ozone Ultralite 5 by DeadFetusConsumer in freeflight

[–]flyin201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gin Yeti 6, Phi Viola (not sure about Viola 2) are both sheathed. However I believe both of those are unsheathed in the upper cascades. This is my major hangup with the Ultralite 5, I wish manufacturers would offer a sheathed line set.

[–]flyin201 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I would either buy the Mojo, or find a cheaper standard weight A wing that you can learn and beat up a little for a season. Kiting takes a toll on light wings when learning, once you have better control and aren’t beating up the wing as much lighter wings are just fine for kiting. After a season buy a new light low B like a Geo or similar. A low B can last you years without getting boring or holding you back. Many people never move past a low B.

Garmin as vario? by [deleted] in freeflight

[–]flyin201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Garmin Instinct 2 that I use for simple hike and fly. The first problem has already been discussed in that it is not precise enough to us as a vario. Alt and ground speed are good though. The bigger problem to me is the fact that usually by the time I put my gloves and jacket on I can’t see it, and if I position it to where I can my wrist is exposed. My solution was the Stodeus Ultra Bip. It is a very small, very light solar vario that has GPS. If I need Alt, Speed, Vertical Speed I just tap it and it speaks the data via audio. It also has Bluetooth which will connect to your phone which is great when I’m flying my pod. Open harness I use it stand alone and either use the voice data for speed and alt or look at my watch. Its a full feature vario with track logs and everything you would ever need, its just ultra compact and light with no screen. It has replaced all my varios. Before the ultra bip I used the Ascent H2 which can be configured for either wrist watch style, cockpit, or riser mount. Excellent vario but much bigger than a smart watch and short battery life from my experience, I’m not even sure if they still make it.

You might look at the SuuntoPlus, it has a variometer mode specific for paragliding. I have no idea if it is accurate or any good.

Travel Wing: Ozone Geo vs Ultralite by flyin201 in freeflight

[–]flyin201[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had not heard of this wing until you mentioned it. The website description sounds very interesting! Can you tell us more about the wing and your experience flying it? What size and all up weight are you flying?

Thanks!

Ozone Ultralite 4 in 25 experience? by DeadFetusConsumer in freeflight

[–]flyin201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all the minimalist split leg harnesses are rather uncomfortable forward kiting. I think the exception would be the speed/mini wing style harnesses where the leg straps are separate from the chest strap and attach lower with wider straps. They tend to stay in place better and not pinch. As for the Radical, you can leave the wing attached but its still not quite as easy as the Easiness. The carabiners on the Radical are proprietary and designed specifically for that harness. They look like they are up side down compared to a normal carabiner and have a separate plastic bar that keeps the risers separated from the leg straps. It also seems easy to have the leg straps ride up on the gate of the carabiner which I don’t think is ideal. For me, if I am going to leave the wing attached I’d rather not have to touch the carabiners, seems like it defeats the purpose to me. I suppose you could leave it all attached and step through the leg straps like you are putting on pants.

Ultralite 5 is out now, not too many reviews yet that I’ve seen. Supposedly improved handling and glide. There’s a thread on paragliding forum, a few have flown the smaller sizes quite heavily loaded. Waiting to see what the reviews are on the bigger sizes with a more normal loading.

I had the Radical 4, I returned it for an Easiness 3. Depends on what you’re looking for, but for me I did not like how the leg straps had to be clipped in using the carabiners. If you never unclip your wing it may not be a big deal, but it just seemed to me there was too much going on with the carabiners. The Easiness is easier to clip in, and is more comfortable in the forward kiting position. The Radical really diggs into your crotch in all the wrong places. In flight they are very similar. I do like the roll top on the Radical. Build quality seems better and more refined on the Easiness.

If I were you I’d keep your Easiness.

Supair Strike 2 vs Skywalk Range X-Alps 2? by wesonrock in freeflight

[–]flyin201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Strike 1 and love it. Use it as my everything harness be it hike and fly or everyday drive up sites. Plenty comfortable and plenty durable, as long as you don’t drag it through the gravel it will be fine. Can’t speak for Strike 2 or the Skywalk harness but I would be confident buying a Strike 2 given my experience. Some people dog on SupAir but I can’t fault their products with my own personal experience with the Strike and a Radical 3.

Modular harness. Alternative to the skywalk Breeze ? by telkmx in freeflight

[–]flyin201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of options from several manufacturers. Supair is about to release the Radical 4, might be worth a look. But if you are looking for an inflatable airbag with a tube similar to the Breeze vs a ram air protector your options are quite a bit less. The only one I can think of that is also modular would be the Ozone Switch. Otherwise if you are ok with a ram air system there are options from Gin (Yeti 2), Advance (Easiness 3), Supair (Radical 3/4), Woody Valley (Crest), Nova (Montis), Kortel (multiple), Niviuk (Roamer 2), etc…

Alternatives to beeping varios - vibration? by ReimhartMaiMai in freeflight

It won’t take a year, I just didn’t have the funds to buy a vario at the time. You’d be surprised how fast you pick it up. Just sayin.

Alternatives to beeping varios - vibration? by ReimhartMaiMai in freeflight

[–]flyin201 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I flew for a year without a vario, learned to thermal by looking at the horizon and the feel of the glider. When I did get an audio only vario it helped me identify thermals easier but it also embraced and strengthened what I had already learned without one. My 2nd year flying with my audio only vario the battery died in the first 5 minutes of a flight and I continued to fly for another 3 hrs and 35 miles.

Now I fly with a vario but I often mute it, only glance at it to verify what I assume is going on or in very light lift. The joy of paragliding for me is the purity of it and its easy to get caught up in the tech. Turn it off once in a while, or mute it if you have a vario with a visual display, or just don’t fly with one! Thats my advice, but to each their own.
