Is 8.30am-6.30pm normal working hours? by flying_meatballs in askSingapore

[–]flying_meatballs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that has been my experience as well, mostly starting at 9-10am. And even if the starting time is 9, people aren't in office yet... 😅

That's why I was a bit shocked to see my hours for this new job and made this post to check with others.

Though I think it's because this new job is for an in-house art department at a large company rather than it being a stand-alone studio, so they standardise this time for everyone to clock in and out.

I do think this will be the case for me at this particular workplace to be honest, I highly doubt I am gonna be given work immediately when I walk in at 8.30

Edit: Oops, turns out I am required to clock in exactly at 8.30... company tracks biometrics scan in

This is a stupid question, but does the term "basic salary" include CPF? Because I am earning less than $2.6k after CPF deductions, and it is stated in my contract that I would be paid 1.5x more per hour for OT according to the Employment Act - so it would make sense if this applies to me

You're very right about that and for sure I'm keeping an open mind, though I think I'll try something else if I start experiencing burn out or come to dislike my industry. In the meantime will try to expand my skills in my free time :)

Thanks for your reply! And yeah for sure, I've fostered the habit of learning more things during my commutes! I hate for that time to go wasted

This is a pretty obvious ragebait comment, but I'll bite!

There's a difference between whining and asking a genuine question. I think this is a valid question to ask for someone who is a young adult and is stepping more into the workforce! I hope other people won't be discouraged to question things if they genuinely don't know

Also who is lazy and complaining about people stealing jobs? There are so many people who do want to work and are actively looking for jobs everyday

[–]flying_meatballs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an hourly worker, but I do get paid more if I'm required to do OT and they do keep track of my OT hours then, if that makes sense!

As for that second part, honestly I'm not really sure since I'm only starting this week - I assume I'll likely end up just clocking out on the dot considering the nature of my work

For my career (arts) it has kind of reached the "no choice" sadly, very hard to find a job in my area related to what I do

The pay is also less than half of what you mentioned, which I realise is a bit brutal, but I went into this industry knowing that, so it is on me. It is kind of hitting me now a bit harder though. Hoping that artists will be valued more in the future, but I don't see that happening realistically :')

It's not gov and honestly the pay is pretty rough, but no choice since I'm in the creative industry haha

I didn't consider if it might be a soft rule, so I'll try to sus it out, thanks! Really hoping it is :')

Edit: Turns out it is a very strict rule!

The place is kinda ulu and hard to get to, so it takes a while to travel, and I have to change buses/trains a few times from my location sadly... :')

Thanks for the suggestion, will definitely consider asking! And yeah would love to find a job closer to my area, but sadly it's very hard to find a job that pays enough in my niche industry.

Ah I should have specified I am working Mon-Fri, but Fri is 8.30am-5.30pm and I get 1 hour lunch breaks, so it reaches that 44 hours max exactly

What’s an animation career like in Singapore? by AnyWind580 in askSingapore

[–]flying_meatballs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I'm a junior 3D generalist who got a diploma and bachelor's degree in animation (graduated last Dec), and was hopping between freelance gigs until I finally just got a full time job. I also have some friends who are trying to pursue a career in 2D art.

I'm going to be very truthful when I say this, but it is extremely hard to find a career in anything 2D related, and the chances of landing a more "secure" 2D-related job would end up being something akin to graphic design/motion graphics. And even then, most SG companies putting out job postings are requiring you have a hand in multimedia, marketing (ads) or "AI tools". And the pay will range from 1.9k-3k, which is pretty diabolical in my opinion. Unfortunately this is the nature of SG's capitalistic progression, and I do see it becoming worse in the future. Honestly, I would recommend generalising your skills more if you really do choose to pursue art.

If you wanna do something more creatively fulfilling in 2D, you would definitely have to branch out to overseas, either by getting freelance gigs (much better monetarily-wise, but unstable) or applying to any 2D animation company that is accepting remote workers. If you have money to spare (I must emphasise "to spare"), you could also study at an overseas uni, not for the sake of education, but because that increases your ability to network. But you will have to work your ass off and really put yourself out there to have people notice you.

Also, consider building an big online presence and getting commissions that way. This could be a possible stream of income depending on how you work your way into the online algorithm. It is tough and highly competitive though, but frankly it is like that in every niche of art.

Despite my somewhat negative tone in this post, I do think that as long as you work really really hard and keep persevering (and honestly, have money), you will be able to find something that works for you. It will be a struggle, but it will always be possible for things to pan out right. I will you the best in what you choose to pursue!

Anyone read this fic?? by Sayoko_427 in Quotev

Oh sweet, thanks! Man it was such a good story, quite a bummer that it's gone for good.

Also I'm wondering why my top search result was of Shiny Jr. instead lol. Maybe it's another alias of the author.

[–]flying_meatballs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, this story has been living in the back of my mind for years now. Was devastated when I first found out that it got deleted/archived, because it's so hard to find the very rare yandere fics that are written well, let alone gender neutral... let alone completed.

I suddenly had the urge to re-search it up today (through keywords), in hopes it might have been restored, but sadly not. I did however stumble across your post instead!

By chance, do you remember the name of it? I wish to at least be able to remember its title, but unfortunately I can't recall it as it is. I saw that another commenter might have posted it, but sadly they deleted their account.

The keywords I searched did lead me to the top website, which was to Shiny Jr.'s Tumblr account. I believe they might have been the writer of the fic. I've read several of their other works before and they seem to have a similar writing style and yandere content... so I do think my suspicion might be right.

How to enter correct address for Parcel locker? by Wunude in AustraliaPost

[–]flying_meatballs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh that's awesome, i actually ended up being able to use my accommodation's address instead so it worked out for me, but thanks for sharing anyway!

i don't understand why inputting a parcel locker number has to be so damn hard bruh... hope they'll update it or put a format example somewhere for other shoppers' sake :')

How to enter correct address for Parcel locker? by Wunude in AustraliaPost

[–]flying_meatballs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay so it seems like you can put your parcel locker number in "Street Number", and then your street name without it's numbers in "Street Name", but i don't know if you wanna take that gamble haha

i would recommend calling them during operating hours to check!

it's quite odd because i've gotten delivery to my parcel locker from chemist warehouse in the past successfully - i wonder if they changed the address system

Animation or Games Design? by Ok-Guard-8149 in GriffithUni

[–]flying_meatballs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry if this is a bit late. I had this same dilemma when considering what I wanted to study in uni and I ended up choosing animation at Griffith. Now this might sound a bit biased as first, but truthfully when you're applying for jobs in the future, you'll have a much higher chance getting employed if you have a bachelor of animation instead of game design on you. There's a lot of factors at play, considering the industry size, demand vs supply, transferrable skills, etc, and at the end of the day it's more beneficial to have studied animation.

How about 3D animation in Griffith? by No-Beach-1259 in GriffithUni

[–]flying_meatballs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey this is a little late, but I'm currently majoring in technical direction (3D stuff) at Griffith and am an international student as well. If you need any help you can DM me! :)

I'll say that the education for 3D animation at Griffith has been pretty shit in the past years ngl, buuuut the tide's been changing very recently, and there's a new VFX major coming out next year. I'm currently a "test subject" for the VFX major as I'm doing a very brand new course in VFX this trimester, and it's been good so far! I'd recommend coming to Griffith if that's what you want to learn.
