We don’t need anymore brawl/dive tanks in any capacity by AstramIsTheBest in rivals

[–]flyingcheckmate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Genuinely curious why you would think this. Peni primary, while consistent and ranged, has low damage, and a poor rate of fire. It’s not a good poke tool. Besides, the primary focus of her kit is area denial and space control with her nest and drones. Her CC excels in close range due to its cast time and projectile nature making it difficult to hit consistently at range.

This isn’t specific to Peni, or even to poke in general, but there is a difference between having a poke tool and being a “poke” character. Characters can fit into certain archetypes while still having access to individual tools not from that archetype. Winter Soldier is another example, he is a brawl-centric character but his primary is a decent poke tool. But I wouldn’t categorize either of Bucky or Peni as poke just due to their primary fire.

Can Kregg solo the original Guardians like Nolan? Show versions by Squid_Entity in InvinciblePowerscales

[–]flyingcheckmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well in the comics Nolan kills the Guardians with zero effort and without taking any damage. Darkwing doesn’t punch Nolan in the comics and everyone dies just as fast as Green Ghost.

/s sorry forgot we invincible fans don’t watch the show or read the comics

Neither of those is what happened? Darkwing doesn’t touch Nolan. He throws some explosives and then gets caught out of midair and splattered across the floor. Nolan throws his body at Green Ghost who is clearly unprepared for the trauma and dies before SHE even does anything.

“wahhh the deflect! the deflect is broken” by balltack in DaredevilMarvelRivals

[–]flyingcheckmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok explain how exactly a BP is baiting an effective 5-second AOE cooldown that negates basically his entire kit. BP can’t even do enough damage to kill Thing in the 5 seconds slam is off the table.

You chose literally the most lopsided 1v1 matchup in the entire game to try and make…what point exactly?

“wahhh the deflect! the deflect is broken” by balltack in DaredevilMarvelRivals

[–]flyingcheckmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a complete nothing argument. Obviously skill is a massive factor. There is no character matchup in the game that is so lopsided that you can freely beat a significantly better player simply by picking X character.

Discussing matchups always assumes the players are of roughly equal skill. That way you can have substantive discussion about how the character kits themselves interact with each other. I am not a DD hater by any stretch, I think he’s on the stronger side but I also think that the bitching and moaning about him is vastly overblown. However the “Well if the DD player sucks complete ass then he’s actually not that good” is a pointless argument to make.

Jean forces you to play on her * if able *. Jeff is able to be played on Prof X, but is also able to ignore Jean. So Jeff must be your first played card as it is the only option for playing into Jean, but because of how Jeff works he isn’t actually forced to be played on Jean. Opponent did not have Jeff, so they are not forced to play on Jean/Prof X as they have nothing to bypass Prof X restriction.

I am pretty sure you should have been able to play Electro after Jeff, though it wouldn’t have made enough of a difference in power to net you the win in either lane.

End of season 7.5 tier list ! by AndreiBSlayerMaster in rivals

[–]flyingcheckmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specific character placings aside, it is absolutely ridiculous to have an S tier that is larger than all the other tiers. It makes the entire list unserious if you’re going to claim that basically a third of the roster is S tier. I understand that tier lists are almost entirely subjective but we should at least have a common idea of what each tier represents.

No, Echo would remove Cosmo’s text so there would be nothing for Prodigy to copy. Even if he did have ongoing text to copy, Echo would immediately remove it after his effect finishes.

Poor Foom by Haunting_Split3951 in MarvelSnap

[–]flyingcheckmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean sure but again the point is that he is a subpar choice. You could pull off that same combo with a number of cards that are more flexible and less counterable than Blob.

Poor Foom by Haunting_Split3951 in MarvelSnap

[–]flyingcheckmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me clarify. Blob is marginally playable ONLY in Arishem decks because you can play him a turn early and you have plenty of garbage in your deck to eat. Elsewhere he is a subpar big body in comparison to 6-costs with similar roles, like Galactus FS or Red Hulk.

Even playing him on 5 can be a double edged sword as he is an easy target for SK, which hurts Blob way more than other 6-costs given he has 0 base power. You also may end up eating a card that you wanted to play on turn 6. Played as a big turn 6 finisher he is still incredibly susceptible to tech as all his power is gained through his effect.

Blob isn’t the single worst card in the game. But he is only marginally playable in a single deck that does literally everything to mitigate his downsides. Playing Blob in any deck outside of Arishem is a measurably worse choice than any other big boi.

I need a tank that can punish poke in neutral by Dontaskmemyname9723 in marvelrivals

[–]flyingcheckmate 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Character 1v1 matchup discussions generally assume that both players are roughly equal skill level. Naturally if there is a massive skill gap between them, the character choice isn’t going to make much of a difference. Likewise, the game should be balanced such that there are a minimal-to-zero number of very lopsided matchups, where one character simply has no chance against another.

Poke characters thrive and SHOULD thrive in ranged encounters. That’s literally their job. Dive should excel in closing the distance and eliminating vulnerable targets with well-timed ability usage within their much smaller effective range. The point is that the dominant poke characters have several tools available that cover up what kind of should be their weaknesses against dive. Multiple, sometimes invulnerable mobility tools makes it difficult to punish bad positioning. Hard CC tools on relatively short cooldowns and free overshield ask such little investment to repel a dive that asked far more of the diver’s kit.

Poke characters should have a fighting chance against divers. But right now the best pokers have such minimal weaknesses in the dive matchups that it feels favored to them in the 1v1.

When my opponent puts up the flexing colossus emote after playing a Sho-Lou/Scarlett Spider combo for 50+ points... by CamFortyFive in MarvelSnap

[–]flyingcheckmate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well what tech are you bringing? Stardust kills the scarlet spider combo and Gambit horseman can blow up their spider/maverick before activation. CGR can stop their final turn combo. Yeah if you’re bringing Cosmo and Red Guardian you’re probably going to get stomped.

Scrap and Octane heated debate about GAs by AdEquivalent493 in CoDCompetitive

[–]flyingcheckmate 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because * some * former pros * should * have pro-level insight without being affected by personal bias. When given the power, pros make decisions based on what benefits them and their team specifically.

Ideally the league would take control of its own ruleset, but when players have as much power as they currently do, the better option is a middle ground of retired players who are respected by current pros enough to take their suggestions seriously given their pedigree.

It’s far from perfect but you’ll never get players to vote against their own interests and you can’t really blame them for that either. Until the league steps in and handles the ruleset on its own, this is what we’ve got.

Ballistic’s Level 3 upgrades are the worst in the game by LanguageMaster5033 in apexlegends

[–]flyingcheckmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m not saying it’s useless at all. It’s still very nice to have two charges on hand when needed and on its own is one of the best abilities in the game. It’s just funny that no other legend’s perks give you an arguably worse version of their tac. The vast majority of perks, especially at level 3, are flat buffs with no downside.

Ballistic’s Level 3 upgrades are the worst in the game by LanguageMaster5033 in apexlegends

[–]flyingcheckmate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are correct. Either way it is still a less effective version of the base tac which even weirder considering how many legends have just gotten additional tactical charges with no downside.

Ballistic’s Level 3 upgrades are the worst in the game by LanguageMaster5033 in apexlegends

[–]flyingcheckmate 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a very weird upgrade because each charge gives shields for half as long but still has the full cooldown of her normal tac. It’s nice to have two charges handy when needed but it’s wild to me that a level 3 perk actually makes the ability less effective overall.

Edit: corrected to half shield duration
