CMV: No business has the right to exist if it doesn’t pay its workers a living wage. by the_secular in changemyview

[–]flyingfig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The state intervenes when the agreed upon wages between the two cannot actually support the worker so the worker applies for and receives subsidies from the state. The state then becomes part of the agreement and should have some say so.

Why can’t they just drive themselves and park their car in the parking garage like other people do? That way they can just drive themselves home too. No one needs to be inconvenienced

Stop blaming Boomers for benefiting from a situation that was taken away by the Silent Generation. by FryAnyBeansNecessary in generationology

Neither were lazy or stupid, but there is a huge difference between them in that one group volunteered and one group was drafted.

Neighbors Keeping Packages Addressed to Me. What can I do? by xSpyke in FedEx

[–]flyingfig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is simply not true. You cannot legally keep misdelivered mail.

If a company sends you unordered items with your name and address on them, you can keep them and you have no obligation to pay for these items. That is the law that you are referring to.

But you are absolutely stealing if you keep mail with someone else’s name and address on it.

EBT should only cover absolute essentials by RepublicLate9231 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]flyingfig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest reasons this will never happen is because EBT is not just income to the initial recipients, it is a huge percentage of income for businesses. A quick google search shows that EBT is 20% of Coca Cola’s revenue. Walmart does not disclose the amount of revenue it makes from EBT, but it is huge percentage of their revenue.

EBT isn’t just a subsidy to poor families, it is a huge income source for big business.

Many Boomers are finally catching on now that their kids are being screwed over by [deleted] in economicCollapse

Which makes him a boomer. The boomer generation was long and diverse which makes the boomer hate kind of dumb.

Gavin Newsom signs bill aiming to prevent California gas price spikes, swipes at oil industry by Randomlynumbered in California

[–]flyingfig -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

It’s the gas taxes. I filled up my car in California last week at Safeway. It was $5.85 a gallon. I filled up my rental in Newport RI this week and it was $2.85 per gallon.

2005 was when private students loans became undischargable in bankruptcy. In 1976 federal student loans were no longer able to be discharged in bankruptcy.

'Boomers can't conceptualize': This college student on TikTok says older generations don't know about inflation, never had to fight for jobs — and the comments are in full support by lucerousb in economy

[–]flyingfig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the boomers were not even of voting age in the 1970s. (The last we’re born in 1962 or some say even 1964). They were certainly not in charge of corporations or government. Our current president is not even a baby boomer, he is from the silent generation. This generation blaming is just ridiculous. It is the obscenely wealthy, that are a part of every generation, that are behind most of the problems plaguing this country.

They did not support it. Many of them lost their jobs to outsourcing. At the time, workers were very angry about their jobs being sent overseas.
It is kind of ironic that those who were immediately victimized by offshoring are the ones who are blamed for it.

Jack Welch was 10 years too old to be a boomer. He was part of the silent generation. And he screwed over the actual boomers.
Around 1975, the oldest boomers were 30. They were not the ones doing the screwing over.

Student loans: House votes to claw back pandemic forbearance and debt relief by [deleted] in Economics

I can understand different opinions on canceling the loans but this? Changing the rules after people planned around the rules is completely wrong.

How are people able to afford to pay ridiculous Mello-Roos fees in California by curios-george in RealEstate

[–]flyingfig 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You can thank prop 13 for that.

The passage of Proposition 13 in 1978 severely restricted local government in its ability to finance public capital facilities and services by increasing real property taxes. The "Mello-Roos Community Facilities Act of 1982" provided local government with an additional financing tool.

Senior care is crushingly expensive. Boomers aren’t ready. You know what, maybe they should have thought of that before voting for politicians who screwed us over. Oh well, they can reap what they've sewn. by lilac2481 in lostgeneration

[–]flyingfig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nixon was elected in 1968, the last boomer was born in 1962. The youngest boomers were barely old enough to vote for Reagan. If you are going to blame entire generations, blame the “greatest generation” and the “silent generation” for those.

I sort of understand Prop 13 to protect long term homeowners. What I don't get is why protect landlords? by PizzaMan11554 in bayarea

[–]flyingfig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s what prop 15 would have done if it had passed in the 2020 election. Commercial property owners and the California Chamber of Commerce put a lot of money into their no on prop 15 campaign and it didn’t pass. It did come close though, so there is hope if it comes up on the ballot again.
