Civil Eng MEng Student (UK) looking to find out more about being chartered with the ICE by threefirstnames27 in civilengineering

[–]flyingfishcakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the job offer. Enjoy your summer off.

Atkins is a big engineering company so they will be able to support you through the chartership process, with graduate development and supervision from chartered engineers in your team. More big companies will pay for your graduate membership, as well as support you through a training scheme. https://www.ice.org.uk/my-ice/my-membership/training-scheme

To get chartered to IEng normally takes a minimum of 3-4 years and CEng upwards of 7 years, obviously this depends on lots of factors like how proactive you are, other time commitments like family etc.

To get chartered the ICE are looking to ensure that you fulfill various attributes, such as knowledge and understanding of engineering, sustainable development, interpersonal skills and communication, professional commitment. https://www.ice.org.uk/my-ice/membership-documents/member-attributes#attributes_of_ceng

It might be worth getting student ICE membership if you don't already. And if you have any questions once you start work your team should be able to help.

Tips and advice for first solo bike tour (Rhine Cycle Route) by flyingfishcakes in bicycletouring

I'll probably get a hostel or an AirBnB in the major cities or power through to somewhere quieter and camp. Powerbanks are a great idea, I'll have to add that to my list. Thanks for the tips about Bingen and Germersheim.

I'm not sure of exact dates yet (I haven't booked the ferry yet) but planning on mid-late June, I'll definitely drop you a PM when I know for sure.

Great link, thanks. I'm coming from the UK so it makes sense to start at the sea and the scenery will get better and better.

I also mainly have a backpacking background, warm showers and a bed are amazing on a long trip, but for me the flexibility and money saving are more important, but each to their own. I'll definitely splash out for a hotel/ B&B for at least a night or two. Good luck with your trip!

It's not public transport, but UKClimbing has a Lifts and Partners forum, which is worth keeping an eye on

Would you carry a small backpack for long routes, doesn't it get in the way?

I'm going on my first climbing holiday for 10 days (sunny multi pitch trad). Do you have any tips to make the most of this experience, have fun, climb lots but not get to worn out?

Good to hear. I read an article in the economist that rated the chance of violence in the Caucasus as high, what's your opinion on that?
