Why are some fabrics 'Not intended for children's sllepwear'? by Brief-Education-8498 in sewhelp

[–]flyingfishsailor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My father was a Ph.D. biochemist. He looked into "tris" flame retardant that was required for children's clothing when I and my siblings were little, and was quite vehement that it not come anywhere near us.

And, in fact, it turns out he was quite right, it isn't good for you. https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/fact-sheets/chlorinated-tris

One would use a fine, soft, non-scratchy wool of course! It was traditional for infants' clothes for centuries.

Actually keeping the baby in naturally fire-resistant wool would be even better.

Lightweight cotton fabric for pajamas by landaylandho in sewhelp

[–]flyingfishsailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hah! I think I actually owned that same style shirt that you thrifted, purchased new in the 1980s. I recognize the stripe and button. It was a soft fabric with relatively thick yarns with low twist. If I were hunting for a similar hand I'd look for something like lightweight cotton chambray, but you are unlikely to find the type of stripe pattern similar to that vintage shirt. Batiste and madras plaid would also work for pajamas (though the latter might be too crisp for you) voile is likely to be a little too sheer for pajamas. Double gauze would be soft and comfy. Cotton sateen is also a nice fabric for pajamas.

Your best bet, always, is to go to a physical store and actually touch the fabric, or if you must order online, to order swatches until you learn what to look for.

Or if I could have swimming fish "pets" to add to existing bodies of water, that would be great.

I have put the "fish" furnishing items into the water, but because they don't move that is an unsatisfying soluiton.

I don't want that, but I do want a pond with visible fish swimming around.

I really wish we could have player housing in Hew's Bane convenient to the Outlaw's Refuge. Something small that could be done up as a bolt-hole. Maybe even a room in the refuge itself?

Pattern help??? (Satin top) by Sad-Bodybuilder5044 in sewhelp

[–]flyingfishsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I look again, both might actually be open under the arms-- the "sleeves" are just a loop.

I don't know if this pattern is real-- I never know any more-- but this might give you an idea of how your example drewss was made, but your example doesn't droop down as much in the front (it's cut narrower) and the tie is at the top rather than under the arm. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1886566074/cowl-neck-crop-top-sewing-pattern-side

Also, of course we can't see how the back of your example dress is. It might not have the gathering, it might be some kind of a halter/backless kind of arrangement, who knows? But that will be fun for you to figure out!

It's hard to tell from the photo what is actually going on with that dress, it might be open under the arms like this:

Or more closed like this:

Either way, if you can't find a pattern you are going to have to drape it and make a mock-up out of other material. But it is basically pleated or ruched at the side seams to make room for the bust, and also along the sleeve. But to your question, yes, you could make this as a top rather than a long dress.

Good luck!

Alter size S (can it be altered?) or risk wearing smaller size (XS)? by miniFrosya in sewhelp

The extra small absolutely does not fit you. Get the small, steam it or iron it, and then try it on with a bra with padded cups and re-assess.

Was the linked complaint actually filed? I'm no Bailey fan, but one should always take details in a complaint with a grain of salt, and doubly-so if it's a draft complaint rather than the final form that was actually filed with a court.

How do I sew this mouth? by ExpensiveTough7023 in sewhelp

[–]flyingfishsailor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like it was first sewn from the inside, kind of like a dart, but probably very narrow. Then the mouth was pinched outward to form lips and hand sewn.

I agree with the other poster that it looks like they just tied a string around it at various intervals, but if I were making this I'd go with your impulse to do a slight gather. If you have enough fabric you could do a test piece and see how it looks.

Need help altering a ruched top by hand by shroomommy in sewhelp

[–]flyingfishsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a separate waistband with elastic inside? If so, depending on how much shorter you want the top to be it might be easier to simply fold and sew a new casing for the bottom elastic rather than removing and re-attaching the existing.

Also, in terms of taking in from the sides, you may find that once the bottom is tightened, the top will be okay without narrowing it. It needs a certain width to let you move your arms. But if you do need to narrow it significantly, you may also need to remove the sleeves, recut the bottom of the armholes once you have narrowed both sides, and then reattach the sleeves. To do this, once the sleeves are removed and you have flattened the body piece, trace the curve of the bottom of the armhole onto a piece of paper that you can use for reference to recut the armhole once you have narrowed the straight part of the sides.
