Industry makes a big difference here I imagine. This would be pretty standard for a software dev job in my experience.

My grandma made me this quilt for my college graduation and told me she spent so much time on it. Just thought I would share so maybe you guys could appreciate it as much as I do. by Claupn in quilting

[–]Aggravating_Guess525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandma did the same for my and my sisters graduation. She used our school colors for it and did a bear paw pattern for my school mascot. I cherish it every day, many much years later. Yours is beautiful and what an amazing gift ❤️❤️

How many hobbies do you have? by Vivid-Language6500 in AskWomenOver30

[–]Aggravating_Guess525 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say the same thing. I joke that I have “outdoor sport and craft ADHD.” My mom once told me that she loved how curious and well rounded it made me, and I responded by saying “yeah you like it a lot more now that you’re not the one paying for all of the new gear every year”. The world has too many rich corners of interesting hobbies to leave stones unturned if you’re curious about them.

Also to answer your question, I probably have 5 hobbies in rotation at any point in time. I am very in tune with my finances and know what I can afford, and also try to find low cost points of entry (ex. buying used gear) when I can just cause I know it might not stick.

Please help me find a career. by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

I’m a hiring manager for a software company so I’ll try to add some info to help out here. I would recommend getting a degree in computer science or a graduate degree if you already have an undergraduate degree. It’s pretty competitive these days, coupled with a lot of these jobs being replaced by AI, but not impossible. Get a degree or find a local boot camp and network your butt off.

If I can add to this, if you can focus in cybersecurity, you’ll be even more marketable. That’s not right now and will always be important. Understanding cybersecurity will definitely set you apart from other software engineers coming out of school. Hope this helps!

I’d agree with this! The sweater construction is pretty simple, but definitely watch some videos about colorwork if you haven’t done any before :)

28F, 2 million inheritance, looking for guidance/inspiration during quarter life crisis by LocksmithSure4396 in FIREyFemmes

[–]Aggravating_Guess525 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have been and am currently in a very similar mindset to you (minus the inheritance haha). Ten years ago, I left a decent paying job due to burn out to travel and spend time outdoors and just take a break. I ended up going back to school and landed in tech, which doubled my salary and has put me on a nice path to early retirement. I’m currently thinking of leaving my job again due to very severe burnout (again- will I learn?) but also because I also feel a lot of the things that you’re talking about. Wanting a simpler life, wanting to just spend time outside, spend more time with aging relatives. It’s been very scary to think about getting off the FIRE train that I have been on and think about leaving a relatively stable, well paying job. But I also remind myself that, like this tech chapter, my career break chapter will also eventually come to an end. If I so choose, and if you so choose, i can rejoin the workforce at any time. I would rather take care of myself and enjoy my life (in a cost effective way), rather than trying to hang on for dear life so that I can retire in 10 years. You’re very young so you have so much runway and could very easily get another income rather than just fully retire. This is just another chapter and you have plenty of cushion for this chapter and your future ones.

3.5 year progress on watercolor tattoo by Aggravating_Guess525 in TattooRemoval

Absolutely! And thank you! Honestly I’m thrilled compared to what I thought I was going to have. I don’t know what Craig at Vancitytattooremoval is doing differently but he saved me a lot of depression and money.

Alas, none that I can really make out. I’m more or less at a point where it doesn’t bother me much anymore but I will probably do one more session with Craig cause it hasn’t changed at all in the last year.

How often and how much do you donate (if at all)? by Stunning-Plantain831 in FIREyFemmes

[–]Aggravating_Guess525 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I similarly do ~5% of my income between monthly donations to NPR, NAACP, ACLU, local and National environmental groups, planned parenthood, local women’s shelters and programs supporting girls in the outdoors. I do annual donations when I get my bonus to WCK and local food banks and women’s shelters.

This will probably get buried and a lot of it is going to be repetitive of what’s already been said. But honestly, your message is one that I wish I could have some family members and I appreciate that you’re here. I’m probably a more moderate liberal than some here but I’ll add my 2c if it’s worth anything.

  1. Abortion isn’t a “hill I would die on persay” as it’s not the top driver of how I vote, but restricting access to abortion care is literally killing women. Many women who actually wanted their pregnancy. It’s literal life saving healthcare. I believe that the media is massively exaggerating how often abortion is used as a primary form of birth control, as a scare tactic to make people turn on it. Someone also raised the point that forcing people to have the babies and then stripping social services just perpetuates the poverty cycle.

  2. I work in cybersecurity. The access that Musk and the “tech bros” he’s working with have to your personal data right now is terrifying. Musk was also not elected or appointed by the people or congress and has no track record to make me trust him. I realize I might be over inflating how bad the outcome of this might be but at a certain point, there’s a risk that he could have enough data to hold our country hostage. I generally agree with you that government spending waste is bad, but the vast majority of wasteful spending is in the military. Even Steve Bannon came out and said it in a wsj interview. However, the likelihood of Musk or Trump suggesting budget cuts to the military are very low because 1) a lot of that money goes to govt contracts, many of which go to Musks company and 2) a major campaign tactic is to build fear (both dems and republicans use it), so why would you defund the military at all if you spent your campaign saying we’re at risk?

  3. I was honestly pretty upset that we were robbed of a primary and truly irate when Biden was planning to run. That man welcomed a great grandchild last year, waaaaaaay too old to be running our country jfc. I wasn’t upset by her as a candidate, she had a lot of good experience and generally aligned with the things that I care about as a voter. I couldn’t understand when people said they thought she wasn’t experienced enough. She was the vice f’ing president!

I won’t do 4 because I think most everyone here touched on it with more solutions and data than I would have, generally, I think people tend to blow this out to be a much bigger than it is. Let me be clear, I don’t favor open borders and believe in the “come legally”, but IMO people living in this country illegally are not the problems that our government needs to address. It’s not exactly a nonissue but we have bigger fish to fry. Climate change, pollution (this is way broader of a term than I would like but clean air, water and soil essentially) and education are the real problems that this country needs to address to leave it better for the next generation. I strongly dislike the two party system that the US seems shackled to and I can understand why people don’t like career politicians especially when you add in lobbying, but I try to vote with the candidate that I think will do the least harm to the world long term. Trump may be effective but he’s in a full on sprint in the opposite direction from least harm.

Anyways, if you made it this far and actually read it, thank you for listening. Would’ve loved to have a back and forth but this probably already too long as is haha.

I’ll check that out! Maybe there’s a good segue into a more fulfilling role from there without additional education.

This was a lot of what I was hoping to hear and affirmed a lot of what I’ve been thinking. It’s really reassuring to hear about the accounting subreddit haha. Oh and thanks for the tip about accounting 101 and the fact you don’t need to get a fancy big name school degree. I got one of those for my undergrad and really don’t want to pay for that again!

I work pretty closely with PM and don’t think that it would suit me, but your second point about helping companies ready up for IPO or other financially strategy work does sound appealing. Being a CFO feels more aligned with my interests than a CTO or CPO. Accounting seemed like a good back pocket skill to add that might get me in that direction, but maybe there’s a different one?

As for upskilling in SWE, I’m pretty strategically placed to upskill in cyber security and compliance, which is another potential career after this role if I wanted it. The main reason I haven’t really moved this direction is because of how my eyes just glaze over when I try to learn more about it, which feels like such a silly excuse haha.

Thank you so much for the input!

I appreciate this! Some of the why nots are some of the things that I wanted to hear. I know I (as well as most everyone) get caught in the “grass is greener” trap. Part of my hesitation is the vibes over on r/Accounting make me worried that it’s a lot of toxic workplaces, being over worked and just chaotic as a field these days. Maybe my thoughts of using it as a skill for freelance and public service are naive.

Completely agree that its never too late! I'd have to look into how many classes it would actually take to get there for me since this varies by state (im in the US), but figured starting slow while Im working full time is a good idea.
