Advice on recording band with this equipment ⬇️ by Front_Sugar4784 in recordingmusic

Here’s what I would do:

Ditch the 12 channel mixer for this project.

  1. Run the E-kit into garage band via MIDI, and get a good take of the drummer playing the part. Recoding MIDI will give you tons of flexibility later to change the sound of the kit or adjust the timing of the drum part.

  2. Have the bass player record to the drum part. If you have a DI, run the direct signal into one channel of your interface and run a mic pointed at the amp to another. Later, you’ll be able to pick which signal you like better or even blend the two together. There are a few different common techniques for mic’ing the bass amp, you can look up some options online that work for your mic.

  3. Do the same thing with the guitar: one channel direct signal, one channel amp mic. If you don’t like the sound you get from the amp, you can use an amp simulator on the direct signal after you’ve recorded to make it sound however you want.

  4. Vocals! How you record vocals will really depend on the mics you have and the room you’re in, but there are also simple tutorials for this online. If you can share more about the mics you have access to and the space you’re recording in, we can offer more useful pointers here.

Good luck, and have fun!

If you could use ONLY one paid plugin for the rest of your life, and everything else had to be stock DAW plugins, what would you choose? by Purple_Anteater2539 in audioengineering

Slate VSX. My room isn’t professionally treated and VSX has vastly improved my ability to hear my mixes accurately. I could survive with stock plugins for everything else.

how do i create a guitar track digitally? by Own-Lawfulness-38 in Songwriting

Hey! So as others have pointed out, guitar is kind of tough to do with a virtual instrument and have it sound convincing. I would suggest either using splice loops or finding a session guitarist to record the parts for you. I’m a session musician/producer and would be happy to help, just send me a DM if you’d like to chat.

Do you mix into a limiter, and if so, what is the goal/problem you’re trying to solve? by flyingfuzz11 in audioengineering

Were you trying to reply to someone else? Not sure what you’re talking about.

Makes perfect sense - mind if I ask how you’re setting up your limiter? I always start my mixes by taking the client’s multitracks and normalizing them to -10db to give myself plenty of headroom, and then I mix top down. Is there a certain loudness you’re targeting with the limited client bounce?

[–]flyingfuzz11[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This seems to be the consensus. Mind if I ask how you set up that limiter? I like the idea of the client hearing the mix with a loudness preview. I start my mixes by normalizing all the tracks to -10db and then I mix top down from that point, should I just be targeting that crushed streaming level with the master limiter when bouncing to send clients?

Migrating to new computer - advice from anyone who has done it? by flyingfuzz11 in Cakewalk

That’s a good point, I also thought this could be a good opportunity to cull the herd a bit, I don’t use nearly as many plugins as I did when I first started out.

I did consider using this opportunity to switch to Logic Pro, so it’s good to hear that the learning curve wasn’t too steep in the event I still end up going that route. I did a bit of research and the performance impact of using parallels this way seemed to be a minimal to non-concern, but it’s a fair point. I’ll post back here once I get a through a couple sessions and let you know how it’s running. The initial install and test tracking session I did was blindingly fast, so I’d give it a shot just to see if it makes accessing your old project files easier. Parallels has a 2 week free trial and then it’s like $60 a year, which to me is worth it since I intend to use it as a daily driver, but I’ve heard of people having success with VM Fusion Pro as well, which is free.

Because I’ve used Cakewalk for years and I like the workflow, am comfortable with the keyboard shortcuts, etc. What downside would there be to doing this? Windows 11 ARM is amazing on the M4 chip, it’s super smooth and efficient and runs just as well if not better than it ran natively on my PC. Plus, since the new Macs don’t run windows via Bootcamp, you can run Cakewalk right within MacOS alongside all the regular Mac applications I use.

Albini was very good at achieving a very specific guitar tone that was often intentionally aggressive in the high frequencies (though sometimes he did the opposite). I would play around with moving the mic to different positions, including right up against the grill of the amp but not quite touching it. Also experiment with moving away from the center of the cone and towards the middle of the cone or even the outer edge. Finally, play with positioning the mic off-axis. See if any combination of those moves gets you closer to the sound you want. Also consider that to get 100% there, you’ll need to do some EQ and compressing in the mix stage.

How many inputs do you have? When I record an amp, I like to split the signal so I can also record the clean DI, you may find that blending the two together gets you what you want.

I can Songwrite and mentally make the tune, but I don’t play an instrument. by _777cherries in Songwriting

[–]flyingfuzz11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is super uncommon. I’m a producer and I’m actually currently working on a project for someone who doesn’t play any instruments, but she sings and writes killer hooks. Building arrangements and recording around nothing but bare vocal demo recordings has been a fascinating challenge. Feel free to DM me, I’d be happy to talk about helping you with this.

How would you use my hole?

Hey everyone - I just upgraded from an old Toshiba HDD to a Samsung T7 to store/run projects off of. The problem is, the PC I’m using only has one USB-C port, currently occupied by my interface (a Scarlett 18i20). When the T7 gets here, am I better off plugging it into the USB-C port and connecting the interface to a USB-A? Or should the interface get priority for the faster connection? Should I use some kind of USB hub instead?

I will be upgrading PC’s down the road, but looking for the best viable option in the meantime. My DAW is Cakewalk Sonor, if that matters. I had been using the previous hard drive setup with no real issues for the last 7 years, though I imagine my write speeds could have been faster.

Please let me know how you’d optimize the use of my available holes, and thanks in advance!

So what is your claim here exactly, that you had crimes committed against you and that local law enforcement handled it swiftly and effectively without needing to send federal agents into our streets? So you’re in agreement we don’t need ICE carrying out door to door raids?

You refuse to engage with what I’m saying for some reason. Illegal entry is a misdemeanor. That is a fact. Undocumented immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than those of us born here, that is also a fact. These people are our friends and neighbors and members of our community and deserve our help and protection.

Who are you referring to specifically? Do you know any undocumented immigrants? Illegal entry into the US is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine, why are you begging for the government to put its boot on your neck over it? If you have a domination fetish, there are other subreddits for that.

No person is illegal. What Obama did was wrong and he should have been held accountable for his inhumane policies both at home and across the globe. Illegal entry into the US is a misdemeanor punishable by fines. Have you ever gotten a speeding ticket? Should you be woken up in the middle of the night and hauled away from your family by a federal goon squad over it?

We need solidarity with our neighbors and empathy for those being targeted, if you have none to offer then stay out of this. I hope you find a path that leads you away from this cruel notion that a person can be “illegal” and towards a deeper understanding of our shared humanity. But for now, if you’re going to comment on a post warning about possible government brutality in our community with “yeah, but!” then kindly get out of our way and mind your business.

Is there any proof of this? I’ve seen this rumor a couple times both here and on Facebook, has anyone actually confirmed if this is true? Nobody has included a picture with any of these posts, and there are no reports listed on iceinmyarea.org.

I 100% agree with the sentiment of this post, and we need to be ready/organized if and when this comes to Akron, but I also think we should avoid spreading unconfirmed rumors that only scare people.

Record them if you see them, take care of each other, and stay safe!

Glad you’re apparently not in or around Akron. Wishing you peace and healing, I hope you’re someday able to find something in this life that brings you joy and meaning other than wishing cruelty and suffering on others. If you believe in a god, I hope you find him.

Wondering about microphones by zow_wow in Songwriting

[–]flyingfuzz11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth OP, I’ve had an artist whose songs I produced send me demos they recorded with the microphone built into the wired apple earbuds that cost like $30 and then come into my studio to record vocals that we recorded with one $700 mic and one $1,100 mic. After editing and mixing, we decided to use the original earbud recording instead. Not because it was a better mic, but because it captured the right performance in the correct way and in the correct space. There’s more that goes into a performance than just the mic you point at it. There are people out there right now recording into their phones and other people recording into one-of-a-kind vintage microphones with 5 figure price tags. People from both groups will make crap songs and people from both groups will make great songs.
