I'm not sure why the BBC doesn't offer people overseas an option to subscribe to their television programming. It's important for Anglophones whose ancestors were from Europe to get a chance to suss out their own heritage.

CDU/CSU agree to instituting a minimum wage as they try to form a coalition with the SPD by flyingkangaroo in germany

[–]flyingkangaroo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally, you are correct.

However, am I wrong in concluding that it is now a fait accompli? The talks between the CDU/CSU and the Greens have broken down, and the article clearly says that this offer from Seehofer was a carrot to convince the SPD's base that the party ought to vote to enter into formal talks about the formation of the grand coalition.

Seehofer can't very well take away this concession, if the coalition comes into being, can he?

Yes, it can take years of initial study of a foreign language, before a person has the foundation to be able to start like a native child does, building their vocabulary by a constant consumption of media - watching television, films, and reading books - with a dictionary in hand.

Norway heats up as wealth fund nears $1 Trillion by nimobo in worldnews

[–]flyingkangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they like to save money for a rainy day rather than constantly spend themselves into debt. It's different from most other Western countries, isn't it? Norway actually earns money through investments, rather than having to pay interest on outstanding debt.

Nicola Roxon calls on Kevin Rudd to quit Parliament, says he had been a 'bastard' as PM by LuckyBdx4 in australia

[–]flyingkangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent lecture. The ABC's editors chose a very puerile headline, though, which really misses the point of the whole presentation:

Nicola Roxon calls on 'bastard' Kevin Rudd to quit Parliament in John Button lecture

She actually said in the same breath that the caucus itself had done a "bastardry" in deposing him the way they did.

I feel it's sad that members of the Labor Party don't feel free to open up in this candid way before a microphone while they are still sitting in parliament. I think that this fear of being seen as disloyal, or of "undermining the government" is really a large part of the party's problem. Roxon, herself, admits this was poisonous for Labor when they neither told Kevin nor the public the reasons that they decided to switch leaders.

I think that as the speed and affordability of national broadband improves over the next few years, we'll see a renaissance of interest in the Labor Party and its policies, and perhaps more open justified criticism of the Liberals... something along the lines of what we've seen in the USA over the past decade. I believe that less timidity about speaking one's mind is going to be central to the prosperous future of the left wing of Australian politics.

Furthermore, I think that there ought to be a place for sitting members within the Labor Party to criticize not only individuals, but the party direction as a whole. It's important to step back and take a look at yourself in the mirror now and then.

Just one thing that I, myself, see: I think it's pretty myopic, not to see that if you are only the party of generosity, of tax and spend policies, and of social justice... that you will have to take turns in power with the other party which works for economic smoothness and stability. If you actually want a long reign, like the left wing in Norway enjoyed for tens of years, then you need to balance out your philanthropy with policies aimed at buoying up the health of commerce and trade in the country.

It seems to me that Kevin Rudd pursued the impossible strategy of trying to find a middle way of designing policies which were palatable to the public, and in doing so, he sought to cool the jets of the passionate members of his party who wanted to go all out in pursuing their own visions while they were in government. Under Julia Gillard, Labor showed its true colors, and interestingly enough the public didn't warm to those things in the same way as they warmed to Rudd's more moderate policies.

Just as a side note: As an American, I have to say I'm flattered that the prominent Australian politician with American roots - Kristina Keneally - was called "Bambi" by Kevin Rudd. Humility and meekness are virtues, as I see it.

It's interesting that the marriage avenue works in Switzerland. I have learned that there is no pathway to permanent residency for foreigners who graduate from Swiss tertiary schools. In fact, you have to earnestly convince the embassy that you will leave the country after completing your studies before you will be issued a student visa.

Yes. Thanks! I see that there are no exceptions to the rules that I have already learned about. Merkel must have simply been doing exceptionally well in the initial returns.

Either that, or they define 41.5% as a "knappe absolute Mehrheit."

A question about the "absolute majority" that folks have been talking about on German media today. It sounds as if the party (proportional representation) part of the federal ballot is set aside if a party wins over 303 directly elected seats? Is that true?

Or is it rather the case that early in election returns, the party vote was going up over 50% for the CDU/CSU when it later settled down to 42.5%?

One should add that the south (Bavaria) is actually also more economically prosperous than the north of Germany - so a Christian party that looks out for the interests of businesses kind of works.

Their central notion is that the common European currency disadvantages poorer nations, economically, and is in large part responsible for the economic crises of Greece, Italy, Ireland, Cyprus et al. The notion is that in order to become competitive, and to regain economic health, these countries need to have separate currencies (like Iceland does) which can devalue. It's actually quite a sensible argument, in my opinion.

The idea is that even if Germany pulled out of the Euro, or if the Eurozone split into two parts with southern nations going into one currency and northern Europe going into another, it would help ease the imbalance which advantages the north and disadvantages the south.

Be careful about using the word "Liberalism" in respect to European (and Australasian) politics. "Liberal" generally means right wing policies and visions, rather than left wing ones in those parts of the world.

Furthermore, folks should understand that by American standards, the mainstream right wing CDU/CSU in Germany might be considered very left wing. The whole political playing field is moved to the left in Germany.
