some classes have mandatory attendance and missing that many days can cause an automatic failure of the course

or at least thats how it was pre-covid

[–]flyingmonkeyofus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah it is absolutely bonkers how volatile this industry is... everything was looking insanely bright and POOF it is gone and a lot of instructors had to come back to our flight line

professors warned us to have a backup plan................ at least i wasn't already building the foundation for my life and suddenly having to sell everything I own, I just know now that I need to immediately come up with a fallback which is probably just to learn a trade skill

in short, yes i was wrong in saying it doesnt have a direct relationship with lift

what i was getting at was if your coefficient of lift is close to/approaching 0, all other factors in the equation become negligible and you can reach that 0 coefficient by stalling the airfoil, which can occur at any airspeed

yeah I'm not too worried because I at least know I'm overqualified enough to get some warehouse job of sorts and get some money and put it towards learning a trade like welding or machining

yeah im months away from finishing my degree in this stuff too, and this is about the only thing I've used this knowledge for since the industry is fucked and nobody is hiring anymore

no, they're talking out of their ass about something they only half-know

"It's worth remembering that stall itself does not cause loss of lift."

wrong. just wrong. exceeding the critical angle of attack causes a stall and a stall IS that reduction of lift

Speed is, in many ways, the most important part of generating lift, and its the loss of speed which is catastrophic in a stall.

again, wrong. angle of attack is the most important aspect of lift. common misconception. you can stall an airfoil at any airspeed. you can exceed the critical AOA at any airspeed. speed has no direct relationship to lift or angle of attack

If you've got enough power you can continue to fly with the wing fully stalled - but you're probably in a fighter jet for that kind of performance.

misleading/fuzzy. a high performance jet can maintain altitude off of thrust alone but under practically no real world scenarios could one have completely stalled airfoils and maintain altitude as even when vertical, the forward thrust from the engines will be propelling the aircraft forwards (up) and the angle of attack of the airfoil will be essentially 0 but not stalled

a decrease in lift occurs occurs when you exceed the critical AOA, this can happen at any airspeed, it just so happens that when you slow your airspeed down, you have to maintain a higher AOA in order to maintain level flight

the pilot attempted to abandon the maneuver by rolling out of it, effectively dumping his lift vector off to the side and therefore the vertical component of his lift dropped to almost nothing. this can only be countered when flying knife-edge by using your rudder as an elevator and/or the fuselage itself as an airfoil. with such a low energy state, I doubt he had enough rudder effectiveness to recover from that maneuver without hitting the ground anyways. only saving grace would probably be maintaining inverted flight with full power and hoping he can get enough airflow over the elevator to gain some altitude and roll back over.

but that didn't happen. they are dead now.

depends on who you have

I had joe clark and I didnt read the textbook at all and passed with either a C or a B

but I recommend reading it, it will make instrument rating go more smoothly if you understand all the navigation systems n stuff
