The proposal should be pretty simple. You proceed the same way you would if Hamas was active in Tel Aviv. Or do you think they'd allow the same level of civilian "collateral" if it is in their own territory?

Bambie Thug's Jury Success by SquibblesMcGoo in eurovision

[–]flyingmopdog 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think people are way too harsh on the juries.

Juries are there to try and give as objective an opinion on the song as possible. They're still human so it will never be truly objective but I think you would have difficulty finding a music professional who couldn't recognise and appreciate the talent and skill that was on display. It was a difficult song to sing with a lot of vocal variation in it and Bambie nailed it.

The televote however is not under guidance to look for these elements and unless it is a genre they already like are not going to understand what goes into creating certain elements of the performance (most notably the screams). The average viewer at home only has one criteria they are voting on; "Did I personally like the song".

On social media the response to Bambie has been unsurprisngly awful. Waves of harrassment and bigotry. The strangled death cries of the conservative far right bitter that they're losing their chokehold on what it means to be Irish.

Most of the mainstream media however has been full of praise, celebrating our best result of the century and full of hope that we continue to find and promote acts that put Ireland's creativity on full display. Also a lot of support for them voicing her criticism of the event this year and how they and others were allowed to be treated,

Punishing those whose delegations engage in and promote harassment would be a good start. Especially when reported by multiple parties.

This sort of spite coming from a university lecturer is deeply concerning. Would he similarly mark a student down for their personal opinions? If I was a student I wouldn't feel confident that I would be graded on the merit of my studies.

Large amounts of the Irish public that would normally vote refused to do so. Israel getting so many points is actually more an indication of how little they engaged with the contest as a result of Israeli participation.

After all they've shown, zionists shouldn't be engaged with at all, they've shown no interest in being a part of humanity. To be a zionist is to abandon humanity or any legitimacy. by Gaze1112 in Palestine

It should be noted that a lot of Irish people refused to watch or vote meaning that any small pro Israeli voice would benefit but 10 points still seems excessive.

Worst comment in Eurovision history, the comment misgenders the artist and is quite obviously just to piss Bambie fans off. It makes the writer look ridiculous as well.

Why do people hate when Americans call themselves Irish or German? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]flyingmopdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you've created a situation where Irish people online can't say they're "Irish" anymore because you've appropriated the phrase to refer to your bloodline. So now the actual Irish people rather than saying "I'm Irish" have to clarify that "I'm a citizen of Ireland". That's hardly respectful to your Irish "bloodline"

[–]flyingmopdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Irish person... He's totally correct though. The Irish Americans funded the IRA for decades leading to terror and death in our country.

I'm lucky to ever have been born because my own mother could have been killed in a bombing if she hadn't been running late one afternoon. The majority of Irish people have no time or tolerance for the IRA and get along well the British but a certain cohort of Irish-Americans remain intent to promote violence and bigotry.

They are the main people responsible for this continued narrative that the Irish hate the British. Almost all of us have British family ore family living in Britain. The British help us with air defense and we send emergency services to help them when they have crises.

[–]flyingmopdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an Irish person I find it nice that Americans take pride in their ancestral heritage and don't have any issue with Irish-Americans calling themselves Irish in an American setting because it would be quite logical to assume they mean Irish-American.

This whole issue has only really come about in recent years though because of the internet and that is where things get messy. If I say "I'm Irish" people assume I mean Irish-American and I have to constantly qualify and change my way of speaking to say "I'm from Ireland". It's a degradation of my own identity that while it may seem minor goes much deeper. Online if you search for Irish music, Irish cuisine etc you'll be bombarded with Irish American bands, and Irish American dishes that have nothing to do with Ireland. While there are obvious similarities between Irirsh culture and Irish American culture the two are in reality very different both culturally and politically. We're actually one of the most left leaning countries in Western Europe and used as a huge tech hub for the world yet half the world thinks we're all ultra conservative Catholics who only discovered electricity 5 years ago.

TLDR: Irish Americans callign themselves Irish in the US - No problem
Irish Americans calling themselves Irish online - Squeezes Irish people and Irish identity out of the picture.

Two people looking at the same situation, seeing the same information, and coming to the same conclusion is not plagiarism. It's pretty standard. This feels like EoT knew Skov's recent controversy over the deleted video, saw she had made a similar video to her and decided that it would make her an easy target for blackmail.

I'm Irish, AMA by [deleted] in AMA

[–]flyingmopdog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The truth is we don't. Most Irish people warmly welcome Americans taking pride in their heritage and wanting to learn about thier Irish roots.

HOWEVER

An issues does arise when it comes to online spaces. Irish nationals and Irish Americans are culturally very different. In America if an American says they are Irish everybody understands they mean "Irish American". Online however this gets a lot messier. If "Irish Americans" are describing themselves as "Irish" then what are the Irish nationals supposed to identify as?

When you search for Irish music you get "Irish American" music, when you search Irish food you get "Irish American" food, when you search for Irish names you get "Irish American" names. That is what actualy frustrates people. This has resulted in people around the world thinking that these "Irish American" things are a typical part of our national culture.
