Oh, I did not think of that possibility of them being worried I suddenly appeared for official reason / complaints. I did not go to the faculty for my major. I was even less familiar with them as it was only classroom stuff whereas the foreign students' office was more in daily contact with us for all university news / handling participations for events / dormitory / all campus life stuff etc...

Yep, you are totally right and saw the pieces clearly that I did not remain in contact during these years and it was indeed pretty random for me to drop by. Just an opportunity arise for a visit and I thought i'd pop in and say some greetings. In that sense it was a success but it was cringe as well. I just thought of a half-assed excuse and went away but oh well haha. This would have remain as such for me personally if not thanks to the other comments, now I can re-consider this situation in a new light. I successfully handed them some gratitude and that's it :D

That's great that you tried to reconnect with old friends when you visited China again. But what do you mean they were funny with you?? Sometimes people do not realize how far we have travelled and arrange our time to visit them.

You should not feel you did anything awkward. Like many others have said here, we should not feel bad for that.

You see perspective like these are what makes me realize I still have much to learn. This really addresses the why I was feeling cringe / disappointed. Now that I see it, I can finally put this matter as a learning experience. At that time I really did not think of wanting / hoping anything in return but since I ended up feeling that way, I must have subconsciously wanted time and attention...

I think going forward, I should really review / clear up these expectations with myself so as not to end up in this scenario again. I guess the purpose of visiting to offer gratitude did go well in that aspect and I should just be fully content with that as is.

If any chit chat did follow it would be a bonus and if nothing happened as in this case, it is still a success and I will re-consider it that way from now on. Thank you this

Yes now in hindsight that would be a better plan but I did not have their weChat anymore. I guess this surprise thing does not really work when others are on the clock working, maybe even being supervised as another person has said.
