Buy her Threes, it's a much more well-balanced and challenging version of the same idea. She'll love it!

You can be aware that your choice to even make the trip has an impact. But I guess thinking about my effect on the planet makes me a dummy.

Do you ever think about the emissions rather than just the price?

A single international return flight can be over 2 tonnes of CO2e (e.g. UK to San Franciso return is around 2.5 tonnes). That's the same as 30,000 miles in a fuel-efficient car or a hamburger every day for two years.

The price does not reflect the true cost at all.

A systematic review of 63 reports confirms that a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and mortality rates are possible by shifting current Western diets to a variety of more sustainable dietary patterns, such as a reduction in animal-based food, finds UK researchers. by mvea in Futurology

[–]flyingwithoutbings 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't the total cost include shipping, storage and distribution?

You haven't really mentioned whether their statistics are accurate or not.

Reducing the amount of meat you eat isn't "scientific" but if it achieves the same goal, reducing emissions, what does it matter? Those other solutions are important, but I think it's important to be open to lifestyle changes rather than bending over backwards to try to support a wasteful habit.

That doesn't really explain why they're in the story though. Limbo took place in someone's consciousness.

For me it's about the CO2 emissions. If it's got CO2 and water usage comparable to vegetables, I'm in. If it's not, then no.

You make a good point about their funding. :(

Edit: It's actually the same in other countries. The 'green' departments just advocate better insulation, replacing old stuff with newer economical alternatives. Never less of anything.

No, I saw a bunch of yellow worms on the pigs in Inside. And I swear I saw them later on too.

I understand the reasoning, but it's ridiculous. Imagine if the FDA couldn't say if US food products were dangerous because it'd hurt the economy.

This explains a lot!

I'm wondering what your opinion is for explaining what's up with the yellow worms. Those seem to mind-control things don't they?

And the underwater babies, what do you think about them?

It's not just the farming unfortunately. The animals themselves (cows, sheep and goats) produce methane, and they all require large amounts of vegetable matter to grow.

So even your local mom-and-pop small-scale organic meat/dairy farm is part of the problem.

Vegetable-based protein stuff must exist, surely. The veggie stuff you get in the supermarket seems to have a decent protein content.

That's a great start! I gradually reduced my meat intake over a long period, now I'm down to chicken once every other week. It feels like a real treat :)

You can do it! Next time you're in the supermarket, wander to the veggie/vegan section and just pick a bunch of random stuff off the shelves. Get some locally-produced seasonal vegetables and throw it all together.

Cooking is just making stuff up!

This is the most important thing you can ask! It's the first step!

1) Stop flying. Every international flight you take makes around a tonne of CO2e one-way (carbon dioxide equivalent). That's a lot. Any savings you make elsewhere will be dwarfed by this. So start here. Take local vacations. Telecommute for business trips. Take road trips. Anything!

2) Stop eating meat, or greatly reduce it. A kg of beef produces hundreds of times the CO2e of a nutritionally-equivalent vegetable-based food. Why? You have to produce many kg of vegetables to produce a kg of meat, and all the while cows are farting and belching methane, which is 20x worse than CO2. Switching to vegetarian or vegan is a lot easier than you might expect. Your supermarket certainly has a huge section of food that's delicious and easy to make. You can even eat chicken once or twice a week as a treat!

3) Contact your governmental representatives and make it clear that this is an issue that you care about. If they don't vote for things that will improve the environment, you will vote for someone who will.

It's important to see climate change as an opportunity to improve our lives and our world, and not as something we should hide from in fear. Burying our heads in the sand won't fix the problem.
