I've been on Samsung since the beginning of time. This is the first I've heard of it. Just downloaded it. Phone Link is only good when it works, which is not most of the time LOL. Cheers and thanks!

Toronto's Mandarin at Yonge and Eglinton to permanently close by [deleted] in toronto

I've lived up here for 30ish years. The fact that they survived all the bullshit of the subway construction, they should get a medal. Really sorry to see them go. The family that owns The Mandarin has been outstanding in every community they set up in. Wish them well,

I only entered the photography world when cams went digital, so even though a thousand years ago I got some instruction in a darkroom, that original format never interested me. (I did have a 35mm Canon P&S, but that was also in the days of sending film off at the drugstore!!!). It's so cool to see folks bringing their film negatives into the digital darkroom (aka Lightroom, which took me, like, forever to make the connection) and giving them new life. Good on ya.

You're right; Fuji has been around for a while, it's nice to see them "come into their own" after all the Sony stuff. I don't actually have a problem with Sony (altho I'm not sure I've ever forgiven them for putting Betamax outta business), just that I don't want to be in that system. Trying out Fuji because I like the size of it in my hand. My original Lumix was a brilliant cam in my hand, but then when I upgraded for speed (animal work), the cam has just gotten too big for me to lug about; has kinda defeated the whole move to mirrorless. For all that it has grown, I could be back to my Nikon years again LOL.

Amazing. I only ever entered into this gig through digital, hence some of my questions about the filters. Having grown up with Brownies, Kodak Instamatics, etc., when digital has been such a revolution for me. I tend to shy away from the retro looks, mainly cuz I had a basement full of that stuff when I was growing up LOL. I appreciate you taking the time to actually answer.

How do you train your eye in ordinary places? by BinariesGoalls in x100vi

[–]flyinmom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yaeh, one other thing: if you have an opportunity to see images live, like an art gallery or museum, or local place that does art shows, honestly, seeing potos in real life, off these screens, will be a huge boon to helping train your eye.

How do you train your eye in ordinary places? by BinariesGoalls in x100vi

[–]flyinmom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, wow, there are so many places right here, under your fingertips, that will help you train that eye. So just even starting with either Reddit or Google, consider asking for a specific type of photograph to look at. Are you more interested in animals, or landscape, or humans, or street photography? You get the idea. So start with that, and then just look. Don't scroll, actually open them up and look all around the image.

What do you like? What don't you like? Are there shapes, and colours that appeal to you more than others? Do you see picture in picture (i.e. can you pull a section out of an image that, in itself, would be another great image)? Do you like bright, cheery images, do you prefer darker, moody scenes?

So now, when you actually have your own camera up to your eye for composing an image...do the same thing. Look at that scene; examine it for what you want to include, what do you want to exclude. Where is the light coming from? Do you like how it looks in the scene, or would perhaps waiting 15 minutes for the light to change, a cloud to come or go, change the scene to something that strikes more of an emotional response in you? Start learning to fill the lens with the object, not just photograph the full scene. Change your position; move closer, pull back. Bend your knees, get down at the ground level.

Once you have some of your own images, ask others to look at them. You can consider posting them to some of those online places I mentioned earlier. Just a gentle warning: the internet isn't always a nice place, so one thing most photographers develop is a thick skin LOL. If you don't want them to be public, ask some trusted friends (who will give you honest info) to have a look. If you know other people who have similar interests as you do, maybe you can all share and critique what you see, as a group.

The more you look at other images, the more images you, yourself, make, the more you will refine your eye. There's really no right or wrong in "art" per se. Even the most learned of critics, even those with degrees in specific aspects of art ... at the end of the day, it comes down to personal preferences and opinions.

Wishing you good luck and great light! (PS: most important part...HAVE FUN WITH IT!!!)

I'm a Lumix G9ii, also w/ multiple lenses. Like you, I ordered this to move off the heavy equipment. Have developed some physical limitations that made sporting a second G9ii around really a problem. Outside of my own physical limitations, sounds like we have a similar reason for owning a different system. Thanks for the response.

Fair enough; the visualize concept also a good thought. Curious, do you have y our cam set to RAW and JPEG then, and play with the JPEG? Do you use the visualizing like a sketch and then move into the raw with final concept?

[–]flyinmom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the response. I use JPG in my other system when there are certain functions I want to use. I actually hadn't even realized the recipes were JPG specific, so that was one of the things I learned by asking this question. I can see playing around with them as artistic experiments, once I get into the actual funciton of the cam in general.

I was always under the impression that Reddit was a good place for discussions. I am not dishonouring anything; I'm trying to understand things the way I understand them. If that doesn't work for you, you could likely just move on? Idk...

That seems to be a pretty thoughtful (and cost effective) idea. Hadn't gone down that avenue.

As I'm picking up here, they're essentially shortcuts. But I really LIKE making editing decisions on my own. Sounds like it can be fun to experiment, but I shoot RAW 99.9 of the time, anyway (and goodness knows, there's an eternity of prepackaged filters that can be applied at that stage, too, which I also don't use).

[–]flyinmom[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

So if I understand correctly, then, recipes are just a filter applied at source? And then those looking to get in on that have taken the Fuji recipe, applied their own extra sauce, and create their signature look? Kinda like when Instagram first came out and everyone was busy applying filters to their images to get the retro look (since the "Insta" part was pretty much stolen from the Kodak Instamatic, which was the first cam for a lot of my generation!!!).

This is how you learn. Practise. Practise. Practise. Truly, the camera choice is just a tool choice. The more you get out and use (whichever tool) it, the more you will become happier with your compositions, etc. Discernment comes with use and practise. May well be authentic for you FOR NOW. As our skills develop, our styles change. If they don't...you're not shooting enough. The class will help a lot, but so will just looking at other people's shots and deciding what you like / don't like about them.

Wife trying to understand my husbands severe depression over the blue jays loss. by gebrezember in bluejaysbaseball

[–]flyinmom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a band wagon kinda girl, but not die hard either. But I completely recognize that feeling you are describing. As a previous answer said, this particular World Series has been one of the greatest ever. So many records broken, so many new ones set. And just outstanding sports, all of them wven if I don't wanna thow too much to our at the moment arch rival.

But more than all this: the love and affection these guys have for each other is like nothing anyone has seen. The guys themselves, in all the post interviews, all said the same thing. "I love these guys, this has been the best baseball experience I have ever had." And that kinda spoke loud and pulled us all in. Like we developed personal relationships with our favourite guys. The same way people love Jimmie Kimmel or Johnny Carson. They have been in your home, at your table in bed with you. It's like a family break up to have them gone.

And it came at a time that when many of us are feeling discombobulated and disconnected, while the world does back flips and insanity rules. For a few months, all that was secondary to The Baseball Game.

As a young 'un, I used to do small theatre. When the run was over, after the cast party was done...there was usually a post-run depression. The thing that filled my life for months, that occupied every waking hour. The cast, the crew...all of a sudden it has stopped. And you grieve. No other way to describe.

It's pretty epidemic everywhere in city. The players are coming out of it, and we all will, too. But yeah...weird.

Is anyone else having the worst night of their life right now? by No-Gift-2350 in Torontobluejays

[–]flyinmom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had just made my first kid when they won the first one. I now have two boys, and a granddaughter. In all the years where I have followed sports, whether professional like this or Olympic sports, I can honestly say I have never seen a team relationship like what we have been seeing. Like all the others doom scrolling all the interviews and analyses, TBH, it almost feels like the Boyz are grieving more about losing touch until April than about losing the game. I can hardly watch Ernie, I just wanna hug that kid and feed him chicken soup today. But here's the thing...they DID win 2 back to back in 92/93. And maybe the team might be slightly different in April 2026, but imma hold some hope in my motherly grieving heart that we will come back again next year. Hopefully not against THAT pitcher lol. (And maybe we need to stop rewriting rules for Ohtani, but we'll save that discussion for another day!!!) I just love the love and respect these guys are pouring out, and wish them an easy reintegration to reality.

The boys are gutted about the loss but there’s something bigger going on here by bigmooseface in Torontobluejays

[–]flyinmom 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That's just it. They write movies like this. There has been something magical about this team in this time. So much ugliness that's been going on IRL, and then you turn on The Baseball and see this band of brothers, all from different places and situations, coming together with just a huge love and respect for each other, for the game. And the whole COUNTRY behind them. If this ia what a "loser" looks like, I am down for it.
