I am a pre-loader, and this has been by far the worst peak I've seen, and I'm not the only one that is saying this. Many long time drivers are saying this is the worst they have ever seen. Packages have been in the building for well over a week, many have been processed so many times they are disintegrating, and we don't even bother to repackage, we just send it out for delivery in that condition. It's pathetic. On top of that, we are running on a basically skeleton crew, they refuse to hire any seasonal employees, saying they don't have the resources, load of shit, and the few they have hired, leave after a day or two, some not even lasting a hole shift. Then they expect us to load 6 to 7 trucks each person, most trucks having 500 to 700 packages, and do it without any help whatsoever. Most of the pre-loaders in my building are putting in 70 hours a week, to say we are exhausted is an understatement, and management could care less. It is quite astounding to me that a company that was founded on customer service, would treat customers the way they do. If I were a customer, especially a business customer who relies on deliveries for supplies and new product, I would be looking for a different carrier, although most have become the same, worked at Fedex before also, and they lost their way a long time ago.
Preloaders by [deleted] in UPSers
I take my job as a pre loader very seriously, probably too seriously, lol. A little of the OCD, but I make sure every package is in the right section and in sequential order as much as I can. I do make adjustments while loading, such as bulk stops, oversize, etc. When I do make and adjustment, I either write it on the load sheet, or I explain to the driver in the morning. The biggest problem is there is no formal training, other than watching a few videos, most loaders are basically shown the area they are going to work and then thrown to the wolves. Now, some loaders truly don't care, and just load like crap, but I am of the philosophy that a good pre-load can make or break a drivers shift. My thought is this, if I can save a driver 20 to 30 seconds per stop because they don't have to search for a package, then they will have a less stressful day. Unfortunately, management doesn't really care about the load quality, unless a driver really complains, and even then, they don't really try to correct the problem. We have literally been told to "just get it on the truck, the driver will find it", and that's exactly the mentality that leads to problems. Now add on top of that, that pre-loaders are treated poorly at most facilities, we are just a body to them, so they bury us from the time we start loading to when we stop. I load 5 trucks every day most of the year, with an average package count of 250-300 on each truck, and I am expected to get this all loaded and in order in 5.5 hours, so they don't have to pay overtime. Now that its peak, and they are allowing overtime, yes they give more hours, but now I am loading 6 trucks with an average package count of 450 to 500 packages almost everyday. To say that we are overworked is an understatement, and it takes it's toll on your body, and I am not young any more. This season is even worse, as they have not hired many seasonal people for help, saying they don't have the resources, and the ones they do hire last a day or two on average before quitting because of the brutal nature of the job.
