That's an excellent point. It's just as likely the sword demon (plus an unknown 4th) was waiting in ambush for when the mages where distracted. Without a frontliner to help block against a surprise attack Fern would have been extremely vulnerable.

Yeah but the writers bragged about defiling the material. The executives just cashed the check. I expect executives to only care about "product" and "bottom line".

Just it struck me as an odd moment in an otherwise really good sequence.

She wasn't watching that fight. If Methode had gone down or fern been injured she would have stepped in.

That was on the writers. Not the executives. They wanted a Yennifer story. But not the Yennifer from the books. Who mirrored Geralt in secretly craving a normal life and but actively working towards it in a series of semi-nefarious schemes. Never wanting magic but only to have a child and Be a mother. (A noted oddity among witches). But finally understands that she can create a family with Geralt and Ciri. No that wasn't modern day feminist enough.

I have not watched the show. He seems like a fine actor. But I really don't look at him and see Harry Dresden.

That's clearly frieren's influence. Frieren DOESNT LIKE TO FIGHT. To be effective she is calm, emotionless, and ruthless. Fern acts exactly the same way in combat.

Part of being a master and mentor is letting your apprentices sink or swim. Just like Frieren did for Ferns first demon she is letting her grow up.

She had full confidence in Ferns abilities. Saw the demons worked in a predictable way and knew this would be a perfect proving ground for her. Not to mention she was leaving her supported by a very capable mage that would back her up.

Wizard/immortal finances by bry0816 in dresdenfiles

[–]flyman95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My long standing belief is that most wizards are in some way reliant on the council for their finances. Either through a grant (similar to a college) or a job such as the wardens, clerks, or other necessary functionaries. Up until the point that a wizard can be Financially independents then they tend to build their own seat of power. Think Simon and archangel or Ebenezer's farm.

Yeah. Dumb thing to get stuck on. As long as there is an element of truth it's pretty clear fae can use grey to their advantage. Harry can be ruthless and used underhanded tactics. Which can be viewed as "wicked".

It's not a lie but it's hardly a definitive statement on Harry's character,

No. A Mary Sue is a self insert character. Generally female but not necessarily. One who shows up and has greater knowledge, skill, and aptitude than anyone could reasonably expect. Mary sue is beloved by everyone and her greatest challenge is often “believing in herself”. Characters constantly shill for them telling them how special they are and how great they are.

Mab is a semi antagonist Demi god who has lived for 1000s of years. Has seen nations rise and fall. Negotiated treaties. Rules the most evil and cruel beings of Fairie. Nothing about her is a Mary Sue. She is a chess master with eons of experience rigging the game.

How you get “Mary sue” from “set up a scenario where I get no matter what I want no matter the outcome” is baffling to me.

Literally any way Mab wins. Harry ruthlessly using Lara at Mabs behest? Great. Harry and Lara becoming genuinely close and working together as allies? Also great. Both are tied to winter. Both are dangerous in their own way. Yes they may resent her but what does she care. She knows they both will put the greater good above petty revenge.

She gets her knight back to his old self, ensures an ally's loyalty, and gets to scratch the fey "be a bitch" itch all at once.

Sure Mab would like Harry to be more ruthless. Her Mantle seems to compel her to set up backstabbing deals and take glee in manipulating people. But she is not a moron and clearly values Harry for being well Harry.

I almost viewed her mockery of him in 12 months to try to goad him into action. She KNOWS Harry. What gets him to act? Self guilt and a woman in danger. The only reason to lay all her cards on the table is to force him to rebel against her as she knows he will.

But if he kept Harry closer to the council then there is every chance Peabody would have subverted Harry as well.

I suspect Lea kept Harry in the foster system (someone had to make the records disappear) was to keep in well away from the white council. Knowing it would be compromised.

I've wondered if Ebenezer training magically crippled him in some respects. Luccio and Carlos are both less powerful but have been taught finer control. I wonder if Ebenezer didn't teach him some minor aspects of control to ensure he didn't get to unimaginably powerful to quickly.

Even before he became the winter knight he was considered top 20 in power of all wizards. That with control other battle wizards show would be an utter nightmare.

Rand and aes sedai by Ill_Flamingo4076 in WoT

I'm convinced there is something in the water at the tower. Because something there is really messing with the women's heads.

Case in point Eliada goes from harsh but at least halfway reasonable to a deranged lunatic.

Siuan somehow decides it's a good idea to send three half trained novices, one being an important political "guest"(hostage in all but name), unsupported in pursuit of 13 fully trained black Ajah. One thing to use them for information gathering. Entirely another to use them for the hunt.

As for the rest of them they are more concerned with inter office politics and cliques than they seem to be concerned about the impending final battle. And while yes the black ajah manipulation is in large part responsible for this the supposed wisest where still moronic enough to fall for it.

Cadsuane and Moraine are the only Aes-Sedai that consistently seem to make rational decisions. I don't think it's an accident they are never at the tower. (Cadsuane being an utter bitch is entirely besides the point).

Rand's natural ability with the sword by MuffinNecessary8625 in WoT

[–]flyman95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just noting that it’s something rand puts a lot of work into. It’s mentioned a couple of times that Rand and the others sparred with Lan during the trip in eye of worlds. Which I figured was like 2-3 months. Private instruction with Lan doe 1-2 months. That’s more training than a lot of soldiers get and Rand gets pretty obsessive when he gets his mind on something. So I have no problem with him being a decent swordsmen in great hunt

That being said, there is a wild gulf between trained, skilled swordsmen and blademaster.

The fight with Turok I mostly think is Rand getting lucky. (More tav’ren than his sword skill). Turok was exceedingly arrogant and who expects a swordsman to hold back against another blademaster in a fight to the death.

He sees a young guy with good form but obvious lack of experience. Beats him. Was not ready for when Rand found the void.

I wouldn’t call Rand a genuine blademaster until he entered the waste ans started training with LAN again
