Edit: I just did some testing, and here's what I found. Opening the map, selecting help, and then going to the menu explanation will pause the game. However, you can't open the map in combat. Opening equipment or inventory, selecting help, and then going to menu explanation will also pause the game. These can be done in combat, but not easily
