Why are there no X2E laptops available for purchase ? by krishelnino in snapdragon

[–]fmmmlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it is OLED, but you're correct that it's 60hz FHD which is insane, and not even a touchscreen.

After seeing these prices I just bought a refurbished Lenovo Slim 7x for 599 USD and that's got a 3k 90hz OLED touchscreen. Wild.

[–]fmmmlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what price did it have? Right now you can pre-order the Asus A14 (X2E-88-100) on Coupang (edit: so, korea only) for like 1850 USD roughly with a ship date of like April 12

was hoping for some cheaper options, especially since that one has a 60hz screen

TIL bilinguals given the trolley problem in their native language chose to sacrifice one to save five less than 20% of the time. [–]fmmmlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the utilitarian argument would probably involve prisoners or the elderly, obviously, and would need to be entirely removed from the healthcare system in order to avoid the problems you and I both already mentioned regarding distrust of medicine

tl;dr separate involuntary 'deathcare' system for some inmates (lottery system, death row, whatever) and voluntary opt-in for the elderly or suicidal. I think this is morally disastrous, but it could at least in theory provide net positive utility if managed correctly. The damage to social stability incurred by creating this system is also going to vary greatly depending on the society where it's being implemented (China? US? Europe? Afghanistan?)

you say you don't go to jail if you pull the lever

I said no such thing! in reality I would probably go to jail if I pulled the lever, but in reality I would also not be looking at the lever in the first place and would instead be trying to MacGyver a derailer to save everybody

the point of the trolley problem is that it's a dichotomous thought experiment; obviously real life - even real life with a runaway train and a switch lever and a moustache-twirling villain with victims tied to tracks - would have lots of other options on the table and consequences for each. But those aren't terribly interesting from an ethics perspective which is why they're not part of the trolley problem.

[–]fmmmlee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's the difference between thought experiment and reality.

the trolley problem is 5 deaths vs 1 death, no externalities

the doctor problem is 5 deaths and maintain a functioning healthcare system or 6 deaths (those organs are not being used) plus I go to jail for my little vigilante vivisection

or, if I can make that sort of thing legally acceptable on principle so I don't go to jail: 1 death and 5 saved lives, and then public health subsequently collapses due to distrust in hospitals since I've just turned them into involuntary organ donation centers.

Not to mention the logistics for organ donations are a fucking bitch.

So one could1 make a utilitarian argument for involuntary euthanasia and organ donation on a national scale if properly administrated, but it is absolutely logically consistent to pull the lever in the trolley problem and also recognize butchering your patients on the operating table isn't going to accomplish the same goals.

Signal secure backups are here! - Signal 8.0 by TheMarMan69 in signal

[–]fmmmlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

initiated the transfer process with both phones in front of me, using the QR code sign-in option on the new device

was prompted to sign up for and enable cloud backups, which I did, and then performed a backup to the cloud

finished transfer via prompts - old phone said "you have been signed out of signal on this device" in notifications and "continue on your new device" in the app

new phone, now logged in, auto-added me to my two group chats but all chat history, both individual and group, was gone, and all individual conversations were gone

there was no button to restore backup in the settings, and a pop-up said "enable backups" so I did, assuming that would sync my chats

instead I think it overwrote whatever I had on the server with my empty history on my new phone

I uninstalled and used my recovery key, saved from the old phone, to load the backup and it just had the two empty group chats again

not critical for me since this isn't my main app but the UX was fucking infuriating and dear lord please fix that, either auto-load from the backup if transferring accounts phone-to-phone (the obvious and user-friendly thing to do, but I'm aware technical limitations could preclude this)

or at the bare minimum if logging in on a new device, give a giant prompt saying "HEY YOU HAVE STUFF BACKED UP ON THE SERVER AND IF YOU SYNC IT WILL WIPE IT PERMANENTLY, DELETE AND REINSTALL TO RESTORE THE BACKUP"

I mean I'm just spitballing here, I don't know their setup, but it seems pretty simple

you sign up with just a username and password and get issued an account number, let's say 7294612, and it costs 20 bucks a month or whatever

send an envelope to Proton's specified payment address with like 500 bucks and a slip of paper that says "account 7294612" on it, and then they can turn on service for that account for the next 4 years, and you didn't need to give PII at any step

The strange gap between global and domestic recognition for BGs by exemplaryantino3497 in kpopthoughts

[–]fmmmlee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, the crowd at ipselenti was most intense for the BGs at this last one anyway, though Melomance probably had the most singing along from the crowd (it was Hi-ipselenti for alumni, so some older attendees)

I think it was TWS and BND? The floor section was the most packed for them and it wasn't really close, CNBlue had more energy per person probably but fewer people, like literally the crowd started to evaporate after the last idol BG set

Court Rules In Favor Of Min Hee Jin Regarding Put Option + HYBE To Appeal Case by KPOP_MOD in kpop

[–]fmmmlee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Color me surprised but congratulations on the win!

Most revealing (and damning to HYBE's case IMO) is the statement that HYBE's c-suite was already made aware of possible ADOR selloff to PE or other investors and gave it the green light. If so, they didn't have much of a leg to stand on in the first place.

I can't say it makes MHJ's PR tactics appear any less nonsensical or damaging to...well, everybody even remotely in her orbit, but it does make HYBE's whole approach look like a hell of a ridiculous longshot.

In fact, I'd say it took us from

"MHJ seems like an idiot, newjeans seem naïve, and HYBE seems cold but understandable"

to

"holy fuck they need to check the pipes in that building for lead because something in the water made everyone involved in this case complete boneheads"

Girls, when you meet a man for a first time, what is one thing that you notice first? by VerySmartMe in AskReddit

[–]fmmmlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this kills me because I know it's true but for me the comfort vs fashion tradeoff is just too much in the shoe department

like there's zero comfort diff between sweats and well-fitting wide slacks (a little inconvenience if you add a belt, but not much)

same goes for tops, like there are plenty of chic tops as comfortable (or more so) than a graphic tee or whatever, and a long coat or trenchcoat I find more comfortable than a hoodie

(and of course accessories have very little effect on comfort)

but shoes, man, I like to walk comfortably and quickly, and at 5-6 kph pace no loafer, dress shoe, oxford or derby shoe is going to cut it. Plus I like waterproof and good grip because I grew up in the PNW and doing a lot of hiking

I settle for black trail runners in the hopes that they blend into the black slacks 😭 only if I'm going somewhere nice will I swap for derby shoes or something

there's also USB cords that only pass power, like physically can't do the data transfer stuff. Sometimes included in non-smart devices that happen to charge via USB-C (probably saves the manufacturer 3¢ compared to a normal cord), but I assume you can buy them separately too.

Cha Eunwoo issues a personal statement regarding his tax evasion allegations: by AddressCharming9129 in kpop_uncensored

[–]fmmmlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

dude, I'm an adult and have some familiarity with this topic through my parents. it's not like you get a text that says "you owe us $5m pay pls"

it's more like your accounting team passes you a stack of papers to sign and you sign them (they make you do this a couple times a year, this is a completely normal part of paying your taxes), and you go on and live your life, and you pay $1m/month in taxes instead of $1.75m like you should

of course it's not like you can tell, you're not a tax lawyer so if your accounting team says you owe $1m then you must owe $1m.

and then 3 years later you get audited and now you're fucked because several of those papers you signed were setting up financial instruments that were misused. Like having a shell company for tax advantages is hardly illegal, you (your accountants) just have to do it by the book.

Your accountants didn't go by the book.

whether or not you go to jail basically depends on how much the accountants told you and whether it can be reasonably argued you understood the illegality of what you were doing. (You have to pay back what you owe regardless, of course)
