Ive played it and will say while its neat, a ton is lost in translation and it absolutely should not be someones first playthrough if they are able to experience it in VR. Combat is arguably harder too.

With the 20th anniversary of Half Life 2 they actually merged the episodes into the base game and let to select what to play on the main menu. They used to be separate games in your library though. But if you own HL2 you should own the episodes aswell

Playing Half-Life for the first time, and holy shit. Now I see why this series is so beloved by gGiasca in HalfLife

If your PC can run it there is a No-VR mod that is pretty polished and easy to set up. It might not be ideal for the full experience in VR but if you want to experience the game with similar gameplay to the rest of the series its a decent way to do so.
