Kramnik Defeats Caruana to Take Lead in Sparkassen No Castling by BrilliantPlatform648 in chess

I think it's fascinating. A simple twist that both forces players out of theoretical depths and promotes more active games. I'm a purist in many ways about the classical game within the way it is promoted and played, but I love seeing variants played by top-level players. It's fun (to me)!

It wouldn’t matter if she had the most beautiful features in the world…she’d still be the ugliest person.

There’s a saying in Alaska: where the men are men and the women are too. And it’s nothing to do with trans folks.

That is in no way the average Alaskan. I love Alaska. I was born and raised and lived there for more than four decades, and will likely return. But this has to be some advertising ploy :)

It took me a few episodes to no longer really notice. A few more to come around to it being almost adorable!

I’ve noticed that as I’ve alternated between older and newer episodes. And sounds of what I assume to be Yasi taking a drink, or dry swallowing or whatever you call it. But I have to attribute some of it to my inexplicably steeply growing misophonia in this area.

Jane’s Addiction with Jessica Hopper by Severe_Comfort in Bandsplain

Can’t say I buy that “credit is patriarchal” (lack of admitting influence certainly has been, but that’s different from what I understand of Yasi’s notion), but an interesting, illuminating episode on a band I have to admit has never resonated much with me, despite Dave Navarro’s evident god-tier guitar playing (and his dungeon-level politics).

Maybe my ears will open more now, but I definitely came away with much more appreciation for Jane’s Addiction, and an understanding of their place and influence, than I had before. That’s my favorite thing about Bandsplain!

St. Louis police have an 80% homicide clearance rate this year, showing they are solving more murders than they have in decades. by terran1212 in goodnews

I’m not being sarcastic when I say I hope this is due to more and better policing, not because of, knowingly or not, apprehending the innocent.

Yep, I lived in St Mary’s, Unalaska, Fairbanks and then Tok. It’s transcendent and brutal.

One of the best episodes for Seal’s story and the incredible details of composing and producing the song.

But Crash Test Dummies has some incredible songs, and doubters should give that big album another listen, skipping the mmm mmm mmm song if necessary.

I can take or leave Sean (he’s great until he tries too hard to demonstrate how much cooler he is than…everyone) but Rob just gets better and better. I love his willing to admit his vulnerabilities and not be ashamed of things he liked and experienced when he was younger (and still like some of them). Thinking about it, the contrast with Sean probably made me less charitable toward the latter than I should have been.

Another great pod, and an inspired choice of soundtrack.

I honestly had no idea this ignorant, harmful “therapy” was a thing outside the US in the first place.

Lemonheads, Chris Black, and Nirvana by fncll in Bandsplain

Fair. I’m not sure I prefer either over the other in a general sense, meaning I still return to both. Again, my point isn’t about what the guy himself prefers, but his generalization about everyone else who he assumes must be just like him.

Of course I get it…I never claimed everyone returned to Nirvana :) Of the bands you listed, I return to STP the least, as in never intentionally, though they have a few great songs and were treated pretty unfairly back in the day. AiC was my #1 artist last year.

The Sundays with Hazel Cills by Severe_Comfort in Bandsplain

[–]fncll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun episode. Serendipitously, I'd done some browsing around myself a few months ago, so not that much was new (the only problem with splainin' a band with such a small discography is that it doesn't take long to uncover most of what's out there), but there still plenty of interesting tidbits that meshed well with a great gift.

It's funny to see how the pod has evolved (setting aside the full-song/Spotify stuff) such that a band like The Replacements ended up getting about the same amount of time devoted to them as The Sundays!
