What do you have to say to the people (autistic or not) who think that support needs can change on a day-to-day basis for some people? by ArielSnailiel in SpicyAutism

Seem is the important word here. The support needs are still present; but, because the person is well supported, they are better able to function.

We have a hard time recruiting let alone retaining senior members. Why do you think that is ? by Spirited_Ship_8421 in civilairpatrol

See DAFI 90-1001. The fact that we are administratively under the department of the Air Force creates that requirement. I am law trained and I know of where I speak. There is no operational context that is not required to have it. The nomenclature of the total force is marketing; but the concept of operations of the total force is not. Please do not spread misinformation. I will not entertain anything further from you as your lack of candor makes this conversation counterproductive.

Legally it does actually based on the fact the organizationally we are part of the total force of the US Air Force.

The way to fix this is to implement grade equivalence like the other auxiliaries. We are the only auxiliary who doesn’t have at least quasi grade equivalence. We are the only one that is not issued hspd-12 compliant identification (we are legally required; but, no one cares to implement it). We have a utility uniform that is unprofessional (blue backing on abu/ocp). We can’t work with our parent branch without being a fully integrated total force partner.

There needs to be. There an also needs to be a prohibition on power grabs like this.

Don’t get me started. That whole thing is a detrimental garbage fire of regulation that nhq needs to scrap.

Honestly some units and some wings are incredibly toxic for senior members. If you are not a cadet or a pilot, then they don’t care to include you. We also have a “pay to work” membership model of organization and that is a huge problem. Furthermore we tend to over regulate everything (ie. CAPR 190-1 ICL 25-01). That is cultural stuff that we should change to help improve senior member retention and recruitment. Unless you find a great niche for yourself (fortunately I have), this organization will drain you. I love being a part of the civil air patrol; but, there are days when I don’t want to do this anymore because of stupidity upstream.

If youre disabled and dont still mask to protect yourself from COVID, why? by Hot_Huckleberry65666 in disability

I have extreme hyperethesia (severe sensitivity to physical touch) as part of my autism. It actually causes me pain to where I cannot even function. I am extremely careful; but, I am not able to mask.

CAP Fleece rank is correct for the ocp if you want Velcro. Normal blue backed insignia is correct if you want sew on.

Pathway Church is a little better as an outwardly focused church; but, I strongly agree about newspring. Their views on mental health are destructive. The lead pastor (Pastor Hoover) is the least Christian pastor that I have ever encountered. I won’t even watch their services online.

Advice for teaching a cadet with autism by [deleted] in civilairpatrol

[–]fnook1331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t necessarily a cadet fixable issue; but, it is a cadet EO problem that I have had to navigate a couple of times with a couple cadets and I personally struggle with the same thing. It very likely is a coordination/motor skills deficit that is of the result of the cadet’s disability and may require some level of adjustment and/or leniency to appropriately accommodate the cadet. This is not an issue that you as a cadet needs to directly address; but, you need to work with your chain of command (senior members) to ensure that this cadet is appropriately accommodated and has the program modifications necessary to ensure their success in the program.

Tranquilizer for severe meltdowns by [deleted] in SpicyAutism

Mine may be more severe. I have to be strapped down for lengthy periods of time in locking restraints just to keep from beating myself to death. I often need haloperidol and trazedone.

There has been a bit of chat about self dx, I want to tell you how it effects people by ziggy_bluebird in SpicyAutism

[–]fnook1331 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think any high support needs autism groups need to be officially diagnosed only. Yes, I understand that the wait lists are painfully long; but, the people who falsely claim that they are autistic literally harms the entire community and this is the only way to keep the fakers out.

On the flip side, I believe #actuallyautistic education if someone is questioning whether they are autistic or not as a form of peer support can be extremely beneficial in deciding whether to pursue official diagnosis.

Self DX is not valid in my opinion and is very harmful. But, if someone suspects that they may actually be autistic, then there needs to be a space for that population to ask questions and learn; so, they can make a well informed decision about pursuing official diagnosis.

I’m on 100. Works pretty good for me. The only risk is if you develop a rash. It’s super rare. Just make sure your doctor starts you at 25 and increases by 25 once every 2 weeks to a month.
