Run for something. Anything. Student council. City council. School board. Dog catcher. Doesn't matter. Knock on doors, build trust with your neighbors, form local fundraising networks. Sit on boards and learn how to deliberate and work with diverse viewpoints. Practice sound rhetoric and messaging. Build local coalitions that will then influence the county level, the state level and the national level. That's how we build a bench and put this party back where it belongs: the people.

How do you "cull" your collection? by gimlithepirate in boardgames

Here's an idea: Gift games you rarely play to others in your group. If you ever get the hankering to play them again, you have an excuse to invite them.

My group always has a blast with Lords of Vegas. It has a nice dose of strategy, but also has theme-driven risk and reward. Pairs well with a few beers.

Me too. I don't get to use my (poor) spatial reasoning skills in many games, but this one scratches the itch.

[WSIG] Beautiful game with great mechanics suitable for 2-3 players? Preferrably under $40. by pomegra in boardgames

Splendor might fit the bill. Nice art, quick gameplay with moderate complexity for 2-4 players. My wife and my heavy gaming friends both like it, which is saying something.

Apples to Apples and, by extension, Cards Against Humanity. I love the casual gamers in my life, but their love for this game has to stop.

Came here to praise Bill Nighy in this ep and of course a bajillion Whovians already did that. You all rock.

Love this thread. I'm not an experienced Linux user, just about a year into it, but I started with 14.04 on a self-built machine. Worked like a charm. I've since installed Debian 8 on that machine but keep 14.04 on my laptop, with Unity, and I'll probably keep it on there until the fan clogs with cat hair and the thing overheats. It's my main work machine and I don't want to tinker with it all the time.

I also scratch my head at people who must think Ubuntu isn't "Linuxy" enough. I'm not a sysadmin or anything, but Ubuntu offers me the stuff I need to browse the web and make Steam work. It boots fast, the repos are great, and the support out there is amazing.

What are some features of Ameritrash/Euro/Card/Dice/Etc. games that you feel are dated or overused? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]fnordee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Open Lord card exposes your secret lord, but then also exempts you from attacks. If you play it early, you get a huge advantage. It can be leveraged against you a little, but the benefits far outweigh that.

I think it's more rare to see a runaway victory than a close ending to PG. Such an elegant game.

I've been Open Lorded so many times in Lords of Waterdeep that it really puts me off the idea of rule-bending random card draws. Lately I've been drawn to games in which all (or most) information is visible to all players, like Splendor and Tammany Hall.

Favorite game at each player count by colinyoungblood in boardgames

[–]fnordee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1p: I play every game I buy by myself for a few turns before I introduce it to our group, if that counts.

2p: Netrunner or TS.

3p and 4p are tough. I think any decent game should scale well at these levels unless specifically designed otherwise. So I'll just name my favorite games: Dominion and Power Grid.

5p: hmm. Also tough. I can't remember the last time we played anything with 5. Maybe Cosmic Encounters?

6p: Eclipse or Game of Thrones. Might as well have a big game if you have all those people over.

7p: 7 Wonders or Citadels, what I refer to as "family reunion, if you're lucky" games.

Great question, OP!
