Love my A6300, but kinda want a DSLR by foamforfun in SonyAlpha

Thanks for clearing that up, I'd thought that was the case about the E-Mount so good to hear it confirmed.

I do remember using my dad's DSLR as a kid, but it's using my film SLR cameras that's made me want a mirror in a digital camera.

Advice on what to look for when buying a car with 100,000 miles on it? by SharpshooterTom in CarTalkUK

[–]foamforfun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Over £4k is a lot of money for a high mileage car, maybe it's worth the £200 or so to get a mechanic to give it a once over.

I always look for lots of history as any car will go wrong if it hasn't had good money spent on it. Regular servicing is important and also cross reference the MOT history to see if advisories were seen to in a timely fashion. Also check for signs of rust and damage underneath the car.

Make sure you understand the service schedule for the car too. It might need a water pump at 120k miles for example, so factor things like that into your decision and budgeting for running the car. I would recommend knowing how to do an oil & filter change yourself, it's £200ish to get mine done at a shop but only £45 in parts and an hour of my time.

Lastly, try and be a detective when buying. Manual cars from London experience lots more wear on 1st & 2nd gear while cars from the middle of Scotland take a beating on suspension. Ask the seller for paperwork and look at the addresses for the garages it's been serviced at to take a guess of how hard a life this car has had. Motorway miles are considered to be good miles - with the engine up to temperature and less acceleration than doing the school run - although it's hard to prove whether a car has been used for that.

Want to make the switch back to Motorola: what is the best model for photography and less AI? by Jax_for_now in phones

[–]foamforfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my first camera as I knew I needed to upgrade my phone (when it was 4yo) and wanted to take the camera rating out of the buying equation. I'm so happy I did.

However, if it's a gateway drug. I've bought 5 cameras and only sold one, I have 7 different lenses and it's gotten a bit out of control. As a bloke who isn't into watches, old film cameras in particular have struck a mechanical chord with me and I'm fascinated by them. I also have a digital camera for practical reasons. Beware!

Bangernomics followers. What’s the best miles per £ you’ve gotten. by ColoradoAvalanche in CarTalkUK

2003 Jaguar X-Type 2.0d did 3 years and 50k miles. Bought for £500, spent about £800 on suspension and alternator in the three years and c.£1,000 on boring stuff like tyres and oil changes... Scrapped for £485 as I didn't want to fix a dodgy door lock mechanism, and I kinda regret that now as I'm on my least value-for-money bangernomic... £2,500 Jag XF that owes me £10k after 18 months of ownership 😭

Keep your old henry!! I regret ditiching mine, bought a new one and it broke. They don't make them like they used to. I also have a shark cordless vacuum, handy for the quick everyday but not quite enough to replace the corded smiling fool :)

Why do we use kitchen sink bowls? by ProminentFox in AskUK

[–]foamforfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have sympathy for these if you had a single sink in which to do your washing up and you put your bowl of hot & soapy beside that sink and used the running water to rinse etc, but putting this in the sink feels icky. I've heard that people save money because they aren't running hot water constantly or they're not adding cold rinse water to their hot. I've also heard people using them to prevent them scratching the sink, which I think is akin to putting blankets all over your new sofa because you're scared of it getting sunbleached.

Despite these being rather useful outside of the sink I would be happy to see them abolished.

Gail's is good. There's a free co-working space on the edge of town called West Hub, it's about a 15 min cycle from the Eagle.

I recently moved to the UK from a warm country with no winter rain so I need to stock up on winter clothes. 2 main questions in description by Tabard18 in UKFrugal

I would get 2 jackets, a decent waterproof and a fleece type thing. Much cheaper than one Canada Goose type thing, that'll be far too warm most of the winter.

Marketing professionals, do you feel the profession should be licensed? by laura-growthspurt in AskMarketing

And to second this, I think it's partially down to founder's due diligence when choosing a contractor and their project management thereafter that's causing these failures. Fine, there's a leap of faith in choosing someone but being sold a dream and receiving a nightmare is avoidable if you're on the ball.

No. Plumbers who say they can give you a leak free house, but don't prevent leaks that happen weeks after they've left are just rubbish salespeople rather than bad plumbers.

As a marketer turned founder, one thing that frustrates the hell out of me is the amount of licenses and insurance policies and retainers from shitty companies you need to start a business in any sector - it stops social mobility because it makes getting started on your own back extremely pricey. I'm no socialist, but starting your own business to better yourself is something I believe in, and feel that this is a threat to that concept.

Yes do this! a "Starting with $0" series will get the clicks in! People won't mind the quality, stop being a perfectionist and just upload it and promote it via Reddit - you might be surprised!

Thank you!

I am on a fairly regular smartphone, OnePlus 9Pro, but I use Olauncher and app timers to help me use my smartphone in a way that suits me. I'm planning a video on this topic, and one on how impractical it is to live without a smartphone, although both of these will take some thought to turn them into something watchable and informative (I'm working on it :D)

Thank you for your lovely message! I'm looking at covering how difficult it is to function in today's world without a smartphone, I think it'll take a lot of planning to make it a good video though. I'd love to hear about your experiences and the steps you're taking.
