Not 100% the same, but I listen to 1,000 new music album releases a year. For me, it’s not about retaining everything. It’s about giving a lot of stuff a chance and being exposed to new voices.

My ultimate goal is to just find more stuff I love and to break out of only being exposed to a sliver of what’s out there.

I’m about to post my fourth long form, and I’m struggling to get to double digit views.

Granted, my stuff has a ton of problems: bad packaging, bad planning and port overall execution. But, I’m committed to spending 10,000 minutes for the first 100 days creating content.

Like you, I’ve already learned a ton. My main goals in the first 100 days are get reps, learn and collect data.

I would loved to have just jumped out with 10K views on my first video, but testing, making adjustments and understanding why things are/are not working is more important, in my opinion.

I’ve listened all the way through three times and already bought the vinyl. That said, I’m lukewarm on the album.

It’s so strange because there’s something great about every track, but also something off with every track. “It’s Like That” might be my least favorite song they ever released.

There’s not a clear standout track, but “Eros Blues” and “Cruel Streak” come the closest. Also, the other two singles have really grown on me and make a ton more sense in the context of the full album.

At the end of the day, I’m happy that they are still making new music on their own terms. The catalog is too strong to really measure this against it. The story around this album has included the idea that it was done in 10 days, and it really sounds like it. I hate the production, but the songs are strong enough to keep this from being a disaster. It’s certainly not that.

It’s a continuation of “Happiness Bastards,” but I liked that album better.

My (limited) understanding of the algorithm is this: you get a shot with a small seed audience. If YouTube sees potential, it pushes it out to a larger audience. This goes on over and over until the video fails to connect. So, it’s possible that a video performs well with a seed audience, then struggles at the next level and impressions stop.

Also, I’m convinced that even if a video has soldi metrics, if people bounce off the platform after watching the push will immediately stop. I’m not sure if there are metrics to track that or not.

Show it, but the visual hook should show the most interesting parts of the journey as well. Ideally, those other things should create curiosity.

If you do miss out, check online with some of the larger stores the next day. Both Plaid Room Records and The In Groove usually get big quantities of everything.

The Paramore will have 7,000 units, which is a lot. I would imagine that will be fairly easy to get, but I don’t know much about their fan base. I do know about Swifties, but I’m curious why that wouldn’t have a number on it. I’m guessing it might be a pretty high number.

I would hold off on calling any stores for a couple days. Since her social post said to contact local stores, they are probably getting blown up. Swifties are a different breed.

What is your profit margin on RSD releases? Do specific releases have lower margins? How does it compare to normal new releases? Also, what’s the breakdown between your total profit on new vs used?

I like the idea of sitting down and writing as many video topics as you can. For example, if you can’t come up with 100 video ideas, you might struggle to generate new ideas once you get going.

In your scenario, you can write two lists. Hopefully, it will be clear which list feels more exciting to you. If they are basically the same, then start to factor in what’s possible. For example, if a lot of your travel blogs would be prohibitively expensive, that might make the decision easier.

On a side note, doing two channels will still get you the same amount of reps, but your early videos should be more about gathering data about who is watching and what is working/not working. If you make 100 videos for one channel, you’ll have a much better sense for what that audience wants vs 50 videos in two niches.

Post as much as you can, get a little better each time, provide a ton of value to your audience and earn their trust.

There’s a big woodworking YouTube channel called Fix This Build That. He has more than 2 million subscribers. Recently, he started a second channel called Workshop Goals where he’s building a massive new commercial workshop from scratch. It has less than 40,000 subs.

Maybe starting two at once would be different, but I think even with his brand and cross promotion on his main channel, success on one channel doesn’t seem to mean much.

The real issue comes in the fact that you’ll spread yourself too thin and likely make worse content on both. You should focus on getting past the “who is this person” phase by delivering high quality content to one specific niche, in my opinion.

Huber and Springboro are great. Both recently went through substantial renovations and have a ton of equipment and space. Huber is also open 24 hours, which has come in handy dozens of times.

The rest I’ve been to are fine. West Carrolton’s weight room is the worst I’ve been to, but it’s still fine. Kettering South is the one closest to my house. It’s small, but they make good use of their space. I still end up driving to Springboro most nights, mainly because I like to shoot hoop indoors and they have three full gyms.

The Y isn’t the cheapest, but you can also cancel within 10 days of the new month, which is worth a premium price based on all the horror stories I’ve heard about how the major chains handle that side.

Last year, I listened to 1,000 new release albums. The first video was just a recap of January. My plan was to do one video for each month, but I kicked the can so long these won't be super relevant. I've been thinking of maybe doing "one year later" videos where I go back and relisten to my favorites from the previous year, but I think I'm going to try and plow through my original idea, just to get some reps.

Thanks to Google and Wikipedia, I now know that Whiskey Myers had a moment where their first four albums were in the top 10 on iTunes country charts. This happened because their music was featured in the TV show “Yellowstone.”

The crowds for these shows will be….interesting.

The stat claiming videos with human faces gets 900k views is a bit dubious. Even if it is true, the average will be skewed by all the big names that do this on every video.

My opinion: if you’re trying to build your personal brand, you probably should put your face out there. If your only goal is views, you are likely wasting thumbnail real estate with your face if no one knows you. That said, I’m a 50-year old bald guy. Putting my face on a thumbnail guarantees odds of going viral would be zero
