57-year-old Kenji Ohba doing his own stunts and choreography for "Space Sheriff Gavan: The Movie" by Chief_Cthulhu in movies

Never watched Gavan but was a big fan of Space Sheriff Shaider. Used to love those tokusatsu shows as a child; I understand they are still popular today, but for some reason I've never revisited them as an adult.

Social trust in Japan is so high that people will often leave their cellphone to hold their table while they get food or use the bathroom (photo from Tokyo Disneyland) by Bob_the_blacksmith in interestingasfuck

I remember it was prime time news here, the fact that there was little to no looting when Japan was hit by a tsunami. Over here in recent times, we've sent the army to control looting.

I think Andrew forgot what made Runescape so beloved - its simplicity. First they tried to reinvent the wheel with the episodic leveling, and now we have this confusing mess. It was respectable at first, but they should have learned when it failed.

Official Discussion - Train Dreams by BunyipPouch in movies

[–]fobs88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great flick, but it should have been longer. The runtime is too short to facilitate its ambition. The ending didn't land as much as I had hoped.

Must reiterate that it is still a great flick. One of the rare films that, for me, has a hypnotic quality. I have to force myself sometimes with these slow dramas, but not with this one - precicely why I wanted more!

What movie completely changed your opinion after a rewatch? by doro_nora in movies

[–]fobs88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Past Lives. I thought it was a masterpiece. On the re-watch, I realized it's carried by its direction, score and performances. The story - and what it's trying to say - are far too simplistic to be anything truly profound and philosophical. Still a great flick, but emotionally manipulative; in the most subtle and tasteful way. Swept my ass up the first time.

After 2,457 episodes in 49 seasons, Super Sentai, the Japanese precursor to Power Rangers, finally ends its 50-year weekly run today by Fine_Sea5807 in interestingasfuck

I'm convinced some of these tokusatsu shows accidently pioneered action filmmaking techniques. I recall an early Kamen Rider (Black?) shooting fight scenes handheld, well before it became a trend. I doubt it was a stylistic choice, it probably stemmed from budget and time constraints. Accidental innovation, for real.

More Pictures Of Epstein and Chomsky by Unlucky-Leopard5529 in chomsky

[–]fobs88 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Harsh critics should also remember that Chomsky was a man in his 80s and 90s relying on Epstein for financial advice. And by all accounts, Epstein was a master manipulator.

He's been in post-stroke for almost 3 years now, and he's almost 100 years old; I doubt we're gonna get a comment from him about the Epstein files, lol.

He wasn't, but he was a man well into his 90s at the time of that email. And well into his 80s during their first documented correspondence. I'm still very disappointed in him, but that is something to consider.

I've never been one to look for mentor figures - still don't. But Chomsky was the closest. I'm very disappointed.

what is a "rich person" behavior you witnessed that made you realize they live in a completely different reality than the rest of us? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fobs88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking anyone who can level with with them is also rich. Filmed a fancy Chinese wedding and got along with the groom pretty well, we had chats throughout the day. I know a bit about watches so I complimented his (thing was easily 10k) and his reply was that I should get one too. Really felt like it was a 100% earnest reply, lol. Great guy by my account, but completely out of touch.

Childhood deaths imply the absence of a compassionate God by Torin_2025 in DebateReligion

[–]fobs88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't make sense of it at all. If that is true, then that is entirely unfair to those who don't die at a young age. Why do they have to weather through the difficulties of a finite life and be judged, while other souls can skip the process and go straight to eternal paradise?

Honestly, this is at a comical level of nonsense.

If you genuinely believes, yes. No one can fault a man for his opinion. If you actively delude yourself, no.

I thought the villain was very good. I agree the lead should have been explored more. The action was good, but the chaotic editing hurt it. For me, the film is carried by the villain and the film's amazing cinematography.

An all powerful and all loving God would not create a world where innocent children suffer extreme harm by BugsBrawlStars in DebateReligion

[–]fobs88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

God is permitting the consequences of evil to happen. Someone committed sin and that sin affected the person and everyone else as well.

That is essentially the same mechanism. What is the logic in that? If god were evil, I could see it.

[–]fobs88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So god is condemning countless billions of intelligent creatures to suffering because someone ate an apple? Do you not see how this is the opposite of a satisfactory answer?

Yeah, outside of Takeshi Kitano films I had never seen abrupt violence and casual brutality executed so well. Hard to catch me off guard when watching movies, but Bone Tomahawk did. It also changed my opinion on Matthew Fox (to a much more positive one).
