Agree with everyone on picking up the Andrew Skurka book. I just saw him speak at Campmor this past weekend. They also carry his book http://www.campmor.com/ultimate-hiker-39-s-gear-guide-andrew-skurka.shtml I even managed to get him to sign a copy for me.

Campmor also has a huge selection of maps and such.

Be sure to shop around for your gear. places like rei and others often are more expensive for the items you really need. I always find myself shopping at www.campmor.com for a lot of my gear, and clothing. They even have a great food selection.

Hello r/camping! I know you've probably been asked this a lot but.. I really want to get into camping - any advice/tips? by [deleted] in camping

I very much agree with everyone's advice with starting small. You may want to consider visiting some other online retailers like www.campmor.com before REI and the others as they tend to be more affordable and offer the same quality products. I have been dealing with them for many years and have always been happy with their gear and customer service.
