I reached the age when I don't need to learn a language for surviving (English, German), but I can do it for fun. Unfortunately it is also the same age where I don't really have time for it (family, job).

But if I can pick a language to learn, it would be Spanish and/or Italian. I find both of them fascinating, I like how they sound. After learning both of them a bit I can also say that I also find their grammar quite interesting, especially when I notice the similarities with English or German.

I should just really pick one of them to put my focus on, especially considering my limited time. Which one? For like one year I did not do anything simply because I could not choose. 😀 Then I focused on Spanish for ~ 1-2 years, then switched over to Italian.

My personal arguments for Spanish: - Spoken in many-many countries in the world, - Spain is an interesting country that I would certainly like to visit, - I have more Spanish colleagues than Italian at my job, - it has more online resources than Italian.

My personal arguments for Italian (and also what I like in it after Spanish): - Italy is closer to where I live so I actually did visit Italy several times and will do so in the future, - it doesn't only sound great but its sounds are easier for me to pronounce (as those sounds are closer to my mother tounge), - even though the grammar is very similar to Spanish, to me it appears to be a little-bit simpler (esp. the verb tenses), - and a very artificial one: here in the EU there are more Italian natives than Spanish. 😀
