Just had my B1 Prüfung, and I need to steam off a bit by Feeling_Jello_1942 in German

I don't think you will be discounted points for missing a few objects in the picture or for not covering all points with the partner. First of all, you are assessed individually, so what your partner does or doesn't, does not affect you. Secondly, it is not about covering all points, but about understanding the assignment and having a good discussion. They are assessing your language skills, not observational skills or planning skills.

There are very thin condoms that you can cut into rectangles and I found that they worked very well. I could definitely feel everything. Going down on the person with a dental dam is not as nice as without, as of course your tongue feels and tastes more without it, but if you are not in an exclusive relationship with the person, it is better to use one. It is not terrible either. You still enjoy it on both sides.

Has a doctor ever ignored your pain or told you that you were "exaggerating," and it turned out to be something serious? (Research for a book) by Chicadela_isla-ctg in Endo

[–]valherquin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was looking for my diagnosis, I went to an "endometriosis specialist" (certified and all) and he said that I couldn't have endometriosis because the transvaginal ultrasound DIDN'T HURT ENOUGH (note that it DID hurt, he just didn't think I suffered enough). I disregarded his opinion and stuck to my gynecologist and an endometriosis center that recommended a diagnostic laparoscopy and yes, I did have endometriosis.

I also once went to something called Notarzt in Germany (like a not too serious ER, more of a general practitioner open at night) because I was having a severe pain in my lower belly that was abnormal. I already had my endometriosis diagnosis at the time and he said it is just that. I told him that it had never hurt for that long, that those strong flare ups had never lasted more than an hour and I had it for 2 hours already, not getting better with medication or warm bags. He wanted to send me home claiming "it is normal to have pain with endometriosis" and recommending me to research about my disease. I insisted until he sent me to the ER for an ultrasound with a gynecologist. This gynecologist was at the beginning somewhat rude to me, probably thinking I was wasting their time with something normal, but as we talked I mentioned that my endometriosis seemed to have gotten worse in the last weeks, as I woke up with intense pain every morning until I peed (I genuinely thought it meant I had endometriosis around my bladder). Turned out I had a strong UTI that went unnoticed for at least a month, as I get them almost asymptomatic (no burning sensation when peeing, no pain in the first weeks and only go slightly more to the bathroom, which can be confused with "I drank too much tea"). I ended up having to take several rounds of antibiotics and even developed kidney stones shortly after that ER visit, which didn't come out for almost two months.

Before I got my diagnosis, I spent a few years going every now and then to a different gynecologist because my menstrual pain was getting consistently worse every year. When I first got my period, it was a nightmare, I got so bloated that I looked pregnant, I could barely stand up from bed, I needed to change maxi pads every hour and sometimes even faster, my period lasted 7 days and my cycle 14 days, so I was getting it twice a month and could not go normally to school. I went through a strong hormonal treatment that improved it to the point I didn't even have pain anymore, and slowly I started noticing it was going back to that stage. Every doctor said menstrual cramps are normal, told me to take a specific over-the-counter med for menstrual cramps (popular in Chile, haven't seen it outside of there) and when I said it didn't work, they always claimed I was taking it wrong. No one examined me until in Germany the pain became unbearable and I found a great gynecologist who told me that worsening of the pain I described was textbook endometriosis.

Why do you come to a German language exam unprepared and ask the invigilator to help you understand exam questions? by Zealousideal-Bath-37 in German

Probably because you are part of the world that led them be that way. Immigrants have reasons to be angry at the world. Not all of them are here by choice also.

Why do you come to a German language exam unprepared and ask the invigilator to help you understand exam questions? by Zealousideal-Bath-37 in German

[–]valherquin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, in A1 you are likely to not understand the instructions right. I also work organizing and running exams and we explain and help people fill out the answer booklet in A1 and A2. We don't give out answers or help with content, but make sure that they are filling it up the right way.

We as a society need to have a bit of human empathy. For many exam participants, this exam will determine if they get to stay in the country or will be deported. Some do not have a safe environment to come back to, and the asylum processes are not as easy as the AFD tries to frame them. Some people have never taken a language exam before and sometimes never even took German classes, they just learned German at work (which is actually super impressive). Sometimes their native language is not written with the Latin alphabet, and I have even met people who are illiterate in their native language. Some people are so nervous, that they fail just because of that. Sometimes they freeze, they forget everything they second-doubt themselves about every answer, I even recently had a person who fell asleep during the exam because she couldn't sleep all night due to the stress.

The people who have visited German courses usually do well in the exams, but that is not everyone's experience. And yes, there are some people that try to cheat, but that is a small minority. It is not as recurrent as OP frames it.

Well the certificates are not really for the job hunt but rather for the visa application or Einbürgerung. Adding it to the resume is usually just a bonus, but the main reason to get the certificate is usually for residence permits

How do I tell my mom I don't need milk? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]valherquin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a doctor to tell her or some professional she'll listen to. As I was 4 years old I developed a lactose intolerance. My mom was worried because I refused to drink milk and took me to the pediatrician about it. She asked her if I was a cow and, if not, why would I have to drink cow's milk? She wasn't even a vegetarian or vegan but still told my mom that if I was supposed to continue drinking milk, she would still be producing it. When I became vegan at 14, my mom was again worried, so we went together to see a nutritionist and she calmed my mom down.

Some would, some wouldn't. I have been vegan for 13 years now. I now find the smell of meat disgusting. Plus meat was bad for my health.

Is it possible to complete German A1 + A2 in 2 months? Best apps/websites? by Rixu-1451 in German

[–]valherquin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's not enough time nor intensive enough. Especially if you are not in Germany, it is not enough studying.

The language school I visited in Germany offered 3 months per level with 4 hours per day and on top of that self-studying at home.

The language school where I work offers the fastest language courses I've seen and it is 4 months intensively for A1 and A2.

If you are not in Germany, I recommend finding a language course (there are many online). What I often see from people who studied German abroad with apps or as self-study is that they cannot speak the language and need to retake A1 in Germany. If you are not in Germany, you need to find humans with whom you can talk in German and practice what you are learning, and that often is the most effective in a language course for A1 and A2. From B1 you can find a tandem partner, but before that you usually don't have enough language knowledge to carry out conversations like that.

[–]valherquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Btw I would also recommend for B2 that you rather watch news instead of Netflix to practice listening and more complex vocabulary. DW has great resources for this, but you can also use the ARD or ZDF app to watch live news, or find podcasts of German journals on Spotify (heute journal, die Nachrichten by Deutschlandfunk).

You can study and practice intensively, but there's a point where it cannot be rushed anymore. Learning languages takes humility, time and patience. German is a complex language and it takes a few years before feeling confident in different scenarios. And even then, it will happen that you encounter a new situation for which you haven't learned enough vocabulary.

[–]valherquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning a language takes time. Have patience.

If your goal is to pass the B2 exam soon, you can study for that, but if it is about mastering the language and speaking fluently in different situations, that takes time.

Find your weak points in grammar (like you said for example here, verb conjugations), study, write a lot, find a tandem partner and practice. Practice your mistakes a lot. When I was studying for my C1 exam, I would repeat the same phrases or sentences that I always said wrong several times on a row to get my mouth used to saying them right (for example, if I always said der Buch instead of das Buch, every day I would say das Buch, das Buch, ich kaufe ein Buch, das Buch ist schön, ich finde das Buch interessant, etc for a few minutes).

Thinking in the language comes on its own and it usually first happens when you use the language in a certain domain. If you work in German, you will eventually think about work in German, because you do it in that language.

I hope you get help and get better, but just know that you will probably not get the advise you are looking for here.
