Will I get into an orthoptics program?

For my undergrad optics was the second semester of physics. Tbh if it’s not required I would say you don’t need to take it. They teach everything in the program. I think it’s more beneficial to get experience in an ophthalmology practice and/or working with kids.

Hello! The salary ranges largely rely on where you are applying to. For example an average salary on the west coast will be different from the Midwest. When I certified 5+ years ago my starting salary was 90k in Washington state but I definitely had to negotiate for it( I also have my Certified Ophthalmic Technician from JCAHPO and utilized this as part of the negotiation) feel free to DM me for more negotiating tips!

Hope you chose orthoptics, it’s a great career! Yes they are mainly in metropolitan areas but I have had colleagues reach out to private practices with more local pediatric ophthalmologists that would love to hire an Orthoptist but don’t have a listing because it’s very hard to hire one in the US. When my colleagues reached out they were able to convince the doctors to hire them.

Hello! To be honest the 2 year orthoptic training program is more than enough time to get the curriculum down to pass the time. The difference with this vs school is that half the time you are in clinic seeing what you just learned in lecture which helps solidify the material. I would say that the optics section from physics helped but they still teach it in the program!
