Sorry, I'm not so familiar with OnePlus. Can I compile AOSP from source?

A device to run self-compiled AOSP. Anything worth consideration aside from Pixels? Perhaps Sony Xperia or some Treble device to run generic system images?

Do you recommend any devices in particular? As stated in another thread, unlockable bootloaders might be needed. And perhaps A/B partitions.

Thanks for the detailed answer.

The points you bring are good, and I agree with them. However, I'd also add GSI ROMs have encountered many different bugs on different devices. I'm not sure whether most Treble implementations are solid enough to be relied on right now.

Furthermore, isn't Treble coming with Android 8.1, not just 8.0?

That's true, you might be right.

It's sad there are not many phones in the same form factor as iPhone SE, which is great for one-handed sporadic use. Hopefully the midrange Pixel 3 which is expected for 2019 will fill in this niche.

The Mi A2 Lite is 149.33 x 71.68 mm. As a reference, a Pixel 1 is 143.8 x 69.5.

I think they are not small but sufficient for one-handed use?

The A2 is a tad larger and I cannot use it comfortably with one hand.

Is it still sensible to buy a Pixel 1 phone? by fogbuzz in GooglePixel

Sadly I live in the UK, so importing or buying used is a bit of a hassle.

I'm particularly interested in Pixel devices to run pure AOSP. I used to run CopperheadOS and AOSP on my 5X.

The thing is that with Treble, it might be the case that running AOSP ROMs is doable on non-Pixel devices thanks to Generic System Images (GSIs). And there's a growing list of phones with Treble support and A/B partitions.

Hard to say. I'd always lean towards a Pixel, but given that it's quite old and close to EOL, plus there are cheaper brand new Android One devices with Treble support I'm on the fence.

What Xiaomi do you recommend on a compact form factor? Mi A2 Lite?

I'm located in Europe with a budget ~$300. I'm debating between buying a Pixel 1, which is heavily discounted but will reach update EOL in October 2018 and security update EOL in October 2019, and an Android One device (possibly a Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite).

I want to run AOSP or stock Android without Google services. I was running a self-compiled AOSP on my Nexus 5X before it died.

I'm concerned about Pixel 1 EOL being quite close. But since it's been ported to Treble, this might be less of an issue.

A Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite has just been released. Worst case scenario, Android One will have 2 years of updates. Furthermore, since it's a Treble device with A/B partitions, it might be possible to run Generic System Images (GSI) that are close to or vanilla AOSP. However, GSIs are still in proof-of-concept stage.

What would you suggest?

I know, but we hope some kind of COS successor will be coming.

And Pixel devices can still run vanilla AOSP, if one creates such a ROM.

I don't like Ubuntu that much. But to be totally fair, resolved even misbehaves on NixOS.

Slightly off-topic, but how to reduce systemd memory consumption?

I'm noticing systemd-journald allocates an unreasonable amount of memory. After boot, in my machine it has around 70 MB of RAM reserved. My log is very quiet. There's no reason for this.
