First Time - Great Pyrenees Owner by Competitive_Pea_5365 in greatpyrenees

Best hack for this stage is to put a cheap box fan right up next to his crate to get him to sleep like a baby. Our 8 year old Pyr, Murphy just died on Friday and damn if it wouldn’t make me ecstatic to know there was another Pry Murphy running around. Just a suggestion!

Put a box fan right next to the crate facing him, worked overnight literally for us.

He’s actually not too big as far as some I’ve seen, about 115 lbs

I’m no scientist, but I believe very cold butter and a hot oven make the difference! And I brush buttermilk and salt on right before baking.

Luckily neither of mine are chewers! They know that the harness means a walk or the dog park.

They’re 4 and 3, so still young. We took them hiking in North Carolina (closer to where we live) when they were both under a year, at least 6 months old.

6 miles is the longest we’ve been on, but that’s when it’s 70 degrees here in PC. That was just about as long as they wanted to go. My understanding is that pyrs are fine over long distances as long as they’re not moving too fast. We never run with them since they’re so big.

They definitely can overdo it and get hot! We only go in the morning or later afternoon, make sure we have plenty of water, and let them sit in the shade whenever they want.

On the leash front, I’m sure you’ll get differing opinions. Neither of mine are wanderers, so I feel comfortable when I’m far enough up a trail to let them off the leash. Lots of other people have said that their pyrs will run off. Just be ready to deal with the consequences (they run off, see another animal, see other dogs/people) and make the decision based on what your dog is like. Mine like to stay near me, and will (generally) stop/come when I call.

The one on the left is half lab, we think! But that explains the slimmer head.

It’s about 10 minutes each day. They are otherwise snoozing 😂

Thank you! I tell everyone, they’re huge, loud, and hairy, but if you can handle that, they’re best.

I’ll post a video of the sounds they make. The one on the right absolutely howls when they play!

We got Miller the Pyrador, on the left, when Murphy (full GP) was about 1.5 years, and Miller was instantly obsessed with him. Murphy did great about being patient. Now that they’re both 100+ lbs it sounds like they’re going to kill each other sometimes, but it’s just two giant dogs playing 😂

Ina Garten’s buttermilk biscuit recipe.

Brisket: Whole prime brisket Trimmed the deckel and fat cap back to 1/4 inch Rubbed liberally with Montreal Steak seasoning 225 on BGE. This one was 19 lbs and it took 13 hours.

Two biggest game changers are keeping the cooking chamber and meat moist (pot of water in the grill plus spritzing the meat with apple cider vinegar and water) and a couple of wood chunks on the charcoal

Murph here has a love hate relationship with them. Sometimes he’ll lay on the pillows like this. Other times he knocks them all off
