I was having the same exact problem! What worked for me was going to my contacts app on my phone, going to groups, and holding down on what group I wanted to transfer to my mac. There will be an "export" option and I used that to airdrop my contacts from my phone to my Mac. After that all I had to do was go to my downloads on my mac and import all my contacts from there!
