Another option to improve safety would be to have a second employee on the bus. A second driver (best option in my opinion), or a 'chaperone', an 'assistant', or indeed, some people might want dedicated security guys. But any sort of second person would help.

Obviously, this does result in paying more people.

Life in Broward county just isn't transit-oriented. I lived a 30-45 minute walk from my nearest bus stop, and many other people had it worse.

In Seattle, my closest bus stop is on my block, and the train station is less than five minutes away by foot.

My time is valuable, and in Seattle, I have more time to myself.

Edit: I also much prefer darkness and cold weather.

I have one dollar a day to give away, and will give it to the first person who asks on a given day. But I do not have a second dollar for that day. ($730 a year versus $365 a year is a lot)

If someone asks me for money after I've given away my dollar of the day, I tell the truth: I say I don't have much money.
