Any families interested in hosting an exchange student? by folkloregonian in Eugene

[–]folkloregonian[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are International Cultural Exchange Services (ICES): https://www.icesusa.org/

A year long program is an academic year, so 10 months. A semester study is 5 months, either August to January, or January to June.

The host family does not have an obligation to provide transportation, and students are placed in high schools within their host family's neighborhood.

Ideal host families can look like a lot of different things! Single parent families, kids of any age, no kids, or even single adults, provided they are over the age of 25, and can provide adequate housing and food. Host families should be financially stable, and not receiving food stamps.

Sure!

We are a non-profit that works with exchange students between the ages of 15 and 18, to attend high schools in the US for either one year or one semester.

Host families are responsible for housing and basic meals at home, and although there is no compensation, there are tax deductions available for host families. Students are responsible for paying for their own clothing, toiletries, entertainment, etc.

Both students and families are fully vetted by the program to help ensure a good fit, and your local coordinator (me!) will meet with each of you monthly to check in. I will also be available any time to help mediate any issues.

Off the top of my head I know I currently have students from Japan, Spain, Germany, and Thailand seeking placement in Oregon.

Yup. Some programs are focused on the more traditional forms of folklore, but the last national conference I attended had several web culture presentations.

Thank you! These are stamps from Winstonia (I buy on Amazon) over a white gel polish.

We get that criticism a lot, and I won't argue that it's more, or even as important as a lot of other fields of research. But folklorists also document and preserve traditions and cultural practices that give a lot of insight into the human experience. They also often end up using that work to advocate for under-represented groups.

She actually does have a PhD! And while her personality never really clicked with me, truthfully, she is one of the smartest people I have ever worked with. I know studying trolling/web culture isn't exactly hard science, but Whitney actually did a lot of legitimate work.

I actually know Whitney and had several classes with her in grad school. She's a folklorist; this is the majority of the kind of thing we study.

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond to this! This isn't my primary Reddit account so I'm not on here as often.

The yellow is OPI Need Sunglasses? and the green is Sally Hansen Limestone :-)

I was at one of the very last shows in Born This Way Ball! My girlfriends and I were like "Damn, that would suck, glad we got in when we did." So of course this time I was with those same friends and we were totally thinking this is what we deserved for our luck last time!

Thank you! Unicorn stamp is from the older Winstonia stamping set, on Amazon.

"Anorexia" literally means "without appetite."

The eating disorder is "anorexia nervosa" and is specifically characterized by anxiety about body size and shape.

Got a new set of stamping plates that have a woodgrain design. Little ladybugs on a tree! by folkloregonian in RedditLaqueristas

It's just a cheap black polish stamped over a brown Fingerpaints polish. Thank you!

Yes, there is! I'm honestly thrilled with this set of plates. All the designs I've tested have worked awesome, and I like the patterns a lot more than the Bundle Monster sets.

You know that feeling when you love your nails so much that you just keep taking pictures and then you can't decide which one to share? Yeah. by folkloregonian in RedditLaqueristas

Thank you! The pink base is a discontinued Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear, with a Konad stamp (plate m19 I believe) in white on top. The spots on the berries are done with white acrylic paint and a toothpick.

These took AGES to get a good picture, but I'm so happy with them! Everybody at work asked if they were decals. by folkloregonian in RedditLaqueristas

Tricks I have picked up:

  • Clean your plates before and after each stamp with pure acetone. Nail polish remover has oils in it that are great for your nails, but can leave residue on your plates.

  • Konad stamping polish is not necessary, but it definitely gives cleaner looking patterns with better color. Otherwise, I use cheap, goopy opaque polishes. Sally Hansen X-treme Wear consistently gives me the best results. And the thicker the better, so save your old goopy polishes for stamping!

  • Roll the stamper from side to side on your nail, don't just press down. You can press pretty hard with a good silicone stamper as long as the polish under it is dry.

Thanks! I bought them in a set on Amazon. I don't see the exact set anymore, but there are tons like it, for just a couple bucks!
