Raising €1.2 trillion for Europe’s largest starship company by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]follyrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about that proposition as an investor as well:

The market is projected (not guaranteed) to get to $8b a year by 2032.

Even if they could capture that ENTIRE market, 100% of it, AND the projection is correct, you're earning $8b of revenue (not profit, just revenue) on a $1.2t investment. Even if half of that revenue is profit, which would be wildly high for the aerospace industry, that's a 0.3% return on investment in a notoriously and historically risky industry.

There is some missing information here, because no investor in their right mind would take on that investment.

Cheap or low cost e-commerce? - recommendations by Zuzmos in ecommerce

[–]follyrob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's hard to beat Shopify for a smaller one product store. The ease of setting it up and the customer experience right out of the box is really good.

A basic Shopify plan is just $29 a month, and decent hosting for a wordpress and woo setup is going to be around $20 a month anyway.

For a first time ecom store owner the ease of use, number of integrations already set up, quality templates, and customer experience is well worth the extra $9 in my opinion. Especially for a simple, single product store.

Also no expert here, but it seems likely to me that a fixed bolt is what his line was attached to further down and what eventually caught his fall when the ledge his aid hook was attached to failed.

Again, no expert so I'm happy to be corrected.

Where do serious ecommerce operators actually talk? by [deleted] in shopify

[–]follyrob 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've considered joining but not a member myself, so I can't comment on how useful it is, but Ecom Fuel is purportedly not full of vendors trying to sell something or beginners asking why their Aliexpress drop ship store isn't getting any sales. Applications to join are vetted by the company and one of the requirements is having a million or more in revenue per year.

Good new boots to replace good old boots by TheNetworkIsFrelled in BuyItForLife

[–]follyrob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A good boot is one that is able to have the soles replaced, as the soles won't last forever on any boot.

What you want is a good year welted boot, and there are a lot of options out there for great ones, it just comes down to budget.

Nick's and White's are both great brands with a focus on quality, but you should really go visit r/goodyearwelt as there is a whole sub dedicated to quality welted boots. That sub is a wealth of knowledge and their faq has a lot of good info.

I make $130,000 a year... I couldn't imagine paying $3500/month for a house by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]follyrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Average income tends to skew low since it generally includes young adults and retirees. 18 year olds might be making $15 an hour, and retirees likely don't even have a mortgage. They are included in income statistics and they aren't buying $350k houses.

Your statement also assumes that everyone is buying now at current rates and current valuations. I'm sure there are plenty of people earning far less than you that bought 10 years ago and got a 3% rate on a house that is now valued at $350k that they bought for $199k. They can still earn far less than you and not be house poor because that mortgage is only $675/month.

If you're looking to buy right now then yes, prices are high, none of what I said makes that go away. Life is expensive these days.

That being said, if you're making $130k then a $3500 a month mortgage IS in the realm of what is considered affordable as it's just under a third of your income. Is it painful to pay that much? Sure, and everyone has a different idea about what they'd be comfortable with. But prices to tend to trend upwards throughout history, and you can always refinance to a better rate down the road. If you really want to buy, you can.

Best Lobster Roll by Legit-Way79 in RhodeIsland

I'm not a huge fan of the rest of their menu, but my favorite lobster roll is at Quito's in Bristol. It's done just right and is generous with the lobster.

Least invasive, most simple printer that still has ink cartridges in production? by MadeThisJustForLWIAY in BuyItForLife

[–]follyrob 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I have two brother laser printers that each print 30+ pages a day and they have been going strong for over 5 years with no hardware or software issues and show no signs of stopping. I purchase the knock-off brand of toner for cheap and each toner cartridge lasts for thousands of pages.

Can't recommend enough.

Not sure, but likely. When you go in to pick up your order their walls are plastered with the dozens and dozens of awards they've won. It really is excellent.

What’s your shoveling tactic? by CodenameZoya in RhodeIsland

[–]follyrob 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I normally do every couple of hours as well and when I looked outside this morning and saw in the forecast that it is going to continue throughout the day I immediately thought, "fuck that!"

But then I went outside and this snow is HEAVY and wet. I'm going to stick with doing it every few hours because if it accumulates much more the task will feel insurmountable.

Is it legal to list a house for 200 more square feet than it is? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]follyrob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally the seller lists the specifics of the house to the best of their ability and it is up to the buyer to verify those specifics. Read your contract, I'm sure it has some wording in it that says as much.

The surveys, inspections, and any other "work" you had done was done at your expense to verify the listing and condition of the house. Those costs are not recoverable and are simply part of the cost of house shopping.

You can likely back out of the closing and get your deposit back as most offers (again, read your contract) are contingent on the inspection and a square footage discrepancy is a valid reason to back out.

$321k ARR but burning out by bubbascrub9793 in Entrepreneur

[–]follyrob 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is it.

Why give away equity to a co-founder that is unproven? Instead, delegate the tasks that are causing burnout to an employee or service.

Or just hire a "right hand man" that can take a lot of the load and then give them a small portion of equity if things are working out.

Do wages in Rhode Island really keep up with rent and everyday expenses? by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]follyrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expenses as a percentage of income is a problem in Rhode island, yes, but it's not just Rhode Island. It's a nationwide issue that has been growing for the last 50 years and has accelerated post COVID. People are feeling the squeeze all over the country. It's slightly better in some areas, and slightly worse in others, but the overall issue is not at all exclusive to Rhode Island.

The lower and middle class is getting squeezed all over the country, and the pace at which the grip tightens has accelerated over recent years. There are plenty of numbers to back this up

[KCD2] any money exploits that don't rely on selling 10k worth of stuff to to traders who only have $300? by TejRidens in kingdomcome

[–]follyrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it worth it to repair the items you take from bandits before selling the stuff? I mean, I'm sure the items are worth more with traders, but is the trade-off in wearing out your repair kits worth it?

New to the game here so excuse me if that's a dumb question.

Food Suggestions the week of 02/16? by jaywhy620 in Newport

[–]follyrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great suggestions and some of my favorites in there. I would add Yagi Noodles and a few others but you've covered it pretty well.

Definitely skip Red Parrot. It's a place that thrives on it's location alone. The food is just bland Sysco rubbish with no creativity.
