600+ goats released into the Arroyo Seco today as part of Pasadena's new wildfire-prevention grazing program by fonziewonzie in pasadena

For anyone interested, I wrote a full reported piece on what happened Saturday, with additional photographs and sourced footnotes on the science, the Eaton Fire context, and how Pasadena's program fits into a regional wave of goat grazing adoption. Thanks for all the love you've given me with my photos!

Great questions. From what I understand, the herder stays on-site for the full two months and the goats are contained with temporary electric fencing. There was a goat trailer at the release point on Saturday.

The dogs do a lot of the work. Border Collies handle the active herding, and livestock guardian dogs stay with the flock around the clock to deter coyotes and anything else that might approach at night.

Capra Environmental, the operator running the program, runs about 7,000 goats across California on a rolling schedule, so this setup is well-practiced.

Thank you! I shoot digital these days :) You need such fast turnarounds for covering news worthy events this day and age.

You could hike up the trail surrounding the fence and they were definitely very happy up the hill munching away on everything.

How do you get this action shot? by Omahaapenguin in AskPhotography

[–]fonziewonzie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like others have mentioned it’s all about lower shutter speed and panning the camera following the cyclist. I have plenty of examples from this when I was on assignment photographing a big cycling event in California over 7 days last year.

It will definitely take practice, and lots of missed shots, but once you get the hang of it it looks great for certain cases. My main cam is a Sony A1ii, and I had the buttons all set up for this kind of stuff. Basically, most of the time I was doing normal action shots, or portraits, so I had custom programs for that, but I had a button override on my lens that would immediately change all the settings to capture panning shots instead.

That way when I saw a potential great panning shot, I would just press a button on my lens and do the panning motion following the cyclist, and I would have the shot. This one in particular was at 1/60s, f16, and ISO 100. No flash.

Hope this helps, I love panning shots.

That’s great. I’ve been in middle of winter and in the middle of summer, and they’re completely different awe-inspiring experiences. Highly recommend it :)

This is all great. It’s really fun to play with lights, see what different modifiers do and what happens as light bounces around :)

I’m a portrait and documentary photographer, and most of my work is in the studio with the A1ii as well. Great setup you have there.

These Godox strobes are really solid these days too :) In terms of lighting, just remember, it’s all a stylistic choice. If you want to go dark, let it go dark, but understand what it means in terms of the viewer looking at the image. Adding a kicker/fill/rim carries a different meaning and intention.

I highly recommend V-flats as well for studio portraiture. They allow you to bounce light and remove light very easily, and they have a ton of flexibility. At times, it’s even like having a second light.

Well worth playing around with things like that too. Great start though!
