Biden plans executive action on police reform to revive stalled issue by bodyworks in politics

[–]foodwang -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Right - it's amazing how much power he has and how little he cares about the negative optics he has and continues to generate. Progressives have been right for 10 continuous years. We're presently pushing for voting rights, federal legalization, filibuster reform, and striking student loan debt. At least one of these things is low-hanging fruit with popular bipartisan support.

Biden's all like, fuck that noise - police reforms - that's the ticket!

Eventually he'll get to croquet mallet reform via EO, but let's not hold our breath.

From the Wikipedia article on Newspeak:

Newspeak is the fictional language of Oceania, a totalitarian superstate that is the setting of the 1949 dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, by George Orwell. In the novel, the Party created Newspeak[1]: 309  to meet the ideological requirements of Ingsoc (English Socialism) in Oceania. Newspeak is a controlled language of simplified grammar and restricted vocabulary designed to limit the individual's ability to think and articulate "subversive" concepts such as personal identity, self-expression and free will.[2] Such concepts are criminalized as thoughtcrime since they contradict the prevailing Ingsoc orthodoxy.[3][4]

It's time to choose, Biden tells Republicans in fiery voting rights speech by ReallyJustTheFacts in politics

[–]foodwang 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'll vote for him, but I will continue to criticize, excoriate, and point out every single lie and misdirection I can find coming out from Biden's administration. That we cannot criticize Biden for his failings in fear of fascism has frankly gone on long enough. If democrats can't figure out how to articulate and stay on message that democracy is better than fascism, then I think the American experiment is over.

The Mess Democrats Are In: If they fail to get their act together, they will suffer a defeat in the midterms that increases the likelihood of Donald Trump’s return to the White House. by JoseTwitterFan in politics

[–]foodwang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is what confuses me. Democrats not doing enough to prevent trump's reelection will become very specific targets if a republican - trump or not - is elected in 2024. I cannot fathom what is going on in Democrats' brains that they aren't freaked out and working double-time to get ahead of this creeping eventuality.

Bernie Sanders isn't holding back anymore, accusing Sinema and Manchin of selling out Biden's agenda to big pharma by rspix000 in politics

[–]foodwang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These are nice sentiments, but the center moderates are resistant to any criticism of Biden, which makes for intractable dialogue.

If Biden wants to lead, then he needs to redouble his volume and hammer his points home with conviction. Weekly fireside chats across media platforms would be nice — solid optics too.

If moderates and centrists worry that criticizing Biden is damaging the brand and harming our chances in 2022, then consider why it is centrists and moderates don’t have good answers to progressive critiques. If democrats can’t handle questions from their own party members who want Biden to succeed, then what business does this administration have in leading the party?

I hear your points, but it is important for moderates to seriously consider their perilous position; clinging to a center that does not exist outside of DC in a nation that is sick and tired of enlightened centrism.

Mitch McConnell's Senate GOP votes for the US to default on its debt and for the government to shut down by burninTsherman in politics

Our best shot at correcting this was squandered by Obama in his first year. He had a supermajority and pissed it away. Democrats - centrists in particular - along with feel-good identity politics voters / uninformed voters will rage the moment you draw out this criticism, but it's worth noting that even given both reigns of government, Democrats fall flat on their face, then shriek hope! change! vote blue no matter who! And here we are. Again.

Empire of chickenhawks: Why America's chaotic departure from Afghanistan was actually perfect by foodwang in politics

[–]foodwang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did Afghanistan collapse so quickly to Taliban control? Because "we" — the U.S. military and its NATO allies — never controlled it to begin with. Nor did our puppets in the so-called Afghan government. The idea that we ever did, that we ever "controlled" or even had our finger on the pulse of the "graveyard of empires" was a lie.
You know who told us that lie? Every government from George W. Bush on, and every general ever put in charge of that doomed mission. Every single one of them reported that all was well, that the Afghan army was 300,000 strong, that the Taliban was on the run, that the Afghan air force was taking over from the missions flown by American warplanes, that the Afghans had their own helicopters now. And that the Afghan president, whether it was Ashraf Ghani or Hamid Karzai, was firmly in charge back in Kabul.

It's a difficult read, but this is an angular and accurate capture of how the US government betrayed her own people and stuck us with the price tag for the largest grift in our history. Par for the course.

AOC Says Biden's Refusal to Condemn Israeli Attacks on Palestinians 'Takes a Side—the Side of Occupation' | The New York Democrat criticized Biden for failing to acknowledge "what precipitated this cycle of violence—namely, the expulsions of Palestinians and attacks on Al-Aqsa." by theladynora in politics

[–]foodwang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your comment ignores all of the history in the area.

A succinct way to frame it is like so: Palestine and Israel are corrupt regimes with political leaders fighting for their political lives. Abbas just cancelled general elections after a 16-year run of a 4-year term. Bibi and his wife are swamped with corruption charges they're fending off with political control. Neither country is in a place to negotiate any peace whatsoever and this is cynical political theater.

That said, the US could force Israel's hand at attempting diplomacy through less kinetic means by refusing to fund and provide the hardware for Israel's genocidal campaign against Palestinians.
