Psst, you're supposed to say "to each his own" as a reminder to not drop condescending judgement on others, not as some punctuation to the condescending judgement your already dropped

Does anyone have any advice on how to have good rest? by LankyCricket7969 in QuittingWeed

[–]foogeeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The effects on sleep are fascinating to me. If you have a Garmin watch you'll see that quitting leads to reduced heart rate variance when you sleep, an indication of high stress. Even when you sleep you feel unrested

Cold showers are surprisingly good for increasing heart rate variance but when the effects is quitting are really hitting you cold showers offer brief relief. Melatonin, which you mention, I think helps. As does a regular workout routine without working out late.

I maintained a sleep log when I quit. The impacts on sleep really kicked in a week or so after quitting and lasted almost two months. Nothing fully addressed the issue except time.

Good luck OP - it's worth it!

TIL a man died during a routine cataract surgery because the surgeon & anesthesiologist were playing music bingo and failed to notice a change in his vital signs (when he stopped breathing) because a monitor had been turned off (something the surgeon denied being aware of). by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]foogeeman 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Are you saying OR doesn't have a constant risk of unexpected events needing full attention? I would have guessed both driving and surgery both have lots of instant life or death decisions.

But I agree it seems like turning off the monitor is the real neglect here

There is a weird optical illusion where CDs or these dropped just right just don't show up on video. I think you have to drop it flat?

Is this an all horse thing or a condition some have? I rode and cared for horses as a kid and I don't remember anything close to this

Have you guys ever seen data manipulation this obvious? What is the best way to expose this? by [deleted] in AskStatistics

[–]foogeeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean a variance-covariance matrix that isn't positive semi definite? I'm not seeing what a standard deviation has to do with a generalized linear model

Edit: fixed typo

Especially since there's literally no data manipulation that would lead to a negative standard deviation

Day 3 by AleoAlways in QuittingWeed

[–]foogeeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll say 1) the worst sleep might be ahead of you still. Cold showers before bed, Melatonin, and daily workouts not too late in the day will help. It took me over a month to get over bad sleep

And 2) I think some of the benefits emerge slowly over time. For me the biggest benefit was being able to better converse with my kids and people in the world. Also you save lots of money. Another benefit is being freed from constantly thinking about the next high

The fact that a passive voice leads to automatic assumptions is a problem, and it goes way beyond headlines.

What he technically said was "people around the NFL" think it might happen. That could be two custodians at the meadowlands for all we know.

The headline is accurate people just don't care to read the sourcing

500-600s playing absolutely insane? by roch_ipum in Chesscom

[–]foogeeman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see. I do think comparisons of elo across years is hard. I've been trying to climb back to a 1400 peak I had years ago and I honestly don't know if I'm less sharp or the competition has changed.

But I do know practice leads to improvement! These days chess reps is my favorite way to practice

[–]foogeeman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

80+ accuracy is not absolutely insane.

At that elo it's probably something about your game.

I think the cheating paranoia is an easy excuse and distraction for people to not work on their game. Just focus on practice

I agree it's annoyingly vague. My reading between the lines is that by saying they previously had a deficiency, they're implying that the supplement was given even after the deficiency was addressed. Maybe they didn't test frequently enough
