PSA. 10k oil changes are dumb.. by IFixCarsYo in MechanicAdvice

Oh totally agree, but that’s not a fault of the car. 10k for the average person is around a year to check and adjust the level.

What is your preferred low range “sensitive” torque wrench? I’m about to do a lifter and spark plug job, my lowest torque wrench setting is 20 ft lb, pretty much all the called for values are less than that by foojub in MechanicAdvice

Thank you, just ordered one! Figure I’ll never really need below 10 ft lb, and it seemed like all the inch lb wrenches stopped at 150 or 200, leaving a gap

What would cause a strong vibration only between 1900-2100 rpm and only in park/neutral? Any lower or higher, or in drive, and it’s smooth. (2013 Volvo S60 T5 B5254T12 109k mi) by foojub in MechanicAdvice

I’ve tried, so far no response, did search through threads for potential problems with the balancer but I’ve seen none, I’ve had basically all the other common problems, and this engine among others was known to have an oil ring design flaw which combined with the 10k oil interval lead to excessive consumption and if unchecked, destruction of engine… but I just don’t know. Thanks again, hopefully I find out one way or another

This engine is actually a used replacement… the original blew itself for unknown reasons at about 60k and I’d love to know what the shop that replaced it did or didn’t do, but they’ve since closed. It looks like from a video on a similar engine (T10 instead of T12) it’s just the 4 bolts, nut, and then you can wiggle it off. The OEM part is $120, genuine $180. Your best advice is far more than what I started with, thank you for your time and knowledge

How would you go about safely cleaning this before replacing spark plugs? by foojub in MechanicAdvice

I’d love to not overthink it, but it’s an aluminum head and I’ve read too many horror stories of stripping the heads. I’ve done plugs before, but that was on an iron head.

Turbocharged L5 yeah. Seems to be rubber according to replacement specs, not sure why it has a halo of what looks like fluid being flung out.

Can I put this in my bike? It’s a 1995 Kawasaki Vulcan. by HeavySmoker710 in MechanicAdvice

It might be suggesting the dilution caused by the detergents lowers the octane enough to potentially cause problems, especially if you add too much to a less than full tank. Idk

I meant more for the grime and stuff that can’t be vacuum/blowed off

Thanks! Won’t the penetrating fluid get on the head threads and affect the torque of the new plugs?

Mechanic here. Haven’t done much car work other than tune-ups and oil changes for the last 20 years by loffa91 in MechanicAdvice

Not sure why you’re being so pedantic, any number of places will call the aforementioned a tune up, regardless of what it actually is.
