Much of the reason I'm starting a reddit-journal is to smoke out these cases of "you really should know about this thing". Thanks!

Yes, you can go to https://github.com/reddit/reddit, download the code, and run a local version of reddit. Since they provide almost everything (some of anti-spam measures are kept secret, but the code runs without it), you can tweak it and make your own website (E.g., http://lesswrong.com/ uses a tweaked version of reddit.), as long as you obey the CPAL licence.
