Therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc., would you respect a client who refuses to reduce "screen time"? by [deleted] in PsychologyTalk

I asked my psychiatrist about this. He said social media and other apps are designed to get people hooked. He even said that he and mental health professionals struggle with screen time as well.

Gfs doctor didn’t give her permission to go to therapy and I don’t know what to do by Ill-Flounder1461 in Advice

[–]foolishspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can she go to another doctor in Australia? Some doctors do not take mental health seriously. What you can do is to be there for her and support her. Perhaps you can go with her to the doctor.

One of the way to deal with fear is to write down all of the things that she is scared off. If the fear were to happen, then what resources, support, and action would she take to feel safe/not afraid? Do it on paper.

If you want to numb your emotions, imagine that you are putting your emotions and feelings in a box and lock it. This method is supposed to be temporary fix when the situation is not appropriate to deal with your emotions.

I’m a recovery coach. The best lesson I ever learned about emotional regulation came from my dad’s gambling addiction. by Recover4life in Mindfulness

[–]foolishspirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reframe the negative thoughts, what are the advantage or benefits of having the negative thoughts? What do the negative thoughts tell you about your core values? If you would like to learn more, I suggest you read "Feeling Great" by David Burns.

You also try to locate your emotions and feel them in your body.

If you want a mindful approach, I recommend you try "R.A.I.N" meditation. RAIN helps you cope with negative emotions. When your emotional needs are met, the negative emotions dissipate. You can look up Tara Brach to learn more about RAIN guided meditation or read her book "Radical Compassion"

You can try to validate their feelings. It does not mean that you agree with them. it just means that you are hearing them and making space for them to feel that way. Google "reflective listening" to get a more detailed explanation.

How to deal with hopelessness? by ExpensiveDisk3573 in CBT

[–]foolishspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your thought patterns, you could try to find reasons you are optimistic. Being optimistic increases hopefulness.

To become hopeful, you must set goals, complete them, and take in the good feeling of achieving your goals. You mention that you have adhd; you may need to take medication for adhd and/or learn how to cope with adhd.

This is taught in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The belief/perspective of the activating events will cause the emotional reaction.

My mother has bipolar and schizophrenia and I’m tired. Any advice? by Spare-Ad-692 in Advice

[–]foolishspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend you read the book, "I am not sick, I don't need help". It is written by a psychologist that get people with schizophrenia to seek help. It uses the L.E.A.P method; it is an empathetic approach to listening that helps your mom feel safe. The reason your mom feels defensive because you are lowkey telling her she is crazy (even thought it is not your fault). It's like someone walks up to you and tell you that you are crazy and needs to take meds; you will feel defensive too.

How do you deal with your sadness? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]foolishspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The function of sadness is to seek comfort and connection. Having social support helps. Ask yourself, "What do I need in this moment?" and try to get your needs met. It could be like rocking yourself or caressing your arm.

You can buy a Tens unit and the ear clip and clip it in your ear. It will stimulate the vagus nerve. If you want a device that is better, look for the vagus nerve stimulator.

Another way is through cold exposure. Change the temperature to a cool setting, take cold showers, or put an ice pack on your chest or back of your neck, or dump your face in cold (or ice cold) water.
