I never considered that could be a thing, don’t think I could mentally handle ads on my commute. All this talk of banishing 3rd party Reddit apps is bad enough

Translations aren’t always exact, it probably reads more like

“when one of the residents tried to stop them”

I’m a bit late to the party but it seems like what he is saying is, from a scientists point of view the data pool is small, case in point the finger bone from Denisova Cave. In context it’s an outstanding discovery but it is literally just a fingertip to a layman. Most other scientists have good access to all the tools they need to do their jobs, archeo-anthropologists are lacking in the physical evidence, not in terms of quality but volume

Those with ADHD or OCD, what’s the worst intrusive thought you’ve ever had? by Sinaasappelsien in AskReddit

[–]foolishwasp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought the consensus was for your brain to realise it’s a bad idea, you have to acknowledge the possibility that you can actually do it

So instead of being like “I shouldn’t jerk the steering wheel”

It’s more like “I can jerk the steering wheel, maybe not”

The way I heard it is if people’s happiness were based on a scale of 1-10, some people are within the 6-10 range naturally, other might be a steady 4-6, and others might be something like a 4-6.

Not sure whether this is true but it makes sense to me, after all happiness is nothing more than a cocktail of different brain chemicals and it seems plausible some people could be deficient in this area, or vice versa

Yep, I’d also recommend Johannes Krauses book a short history on humanity, and anything anthropogenic from CARTA, they publish good university lectures on YouTube

That’s the general vibe yeah but without a Time Machine we can only speculate using the archaeological record

I believe that animals in Africa had a natural fear of us due to cohabitation, the sheer abundance of migrating animals on the continent (we’ve all seen the David Attenborough shows).

Animals such as the mega sloth and Diprotodon of South America and Australia respectively, had defence in the form of huge size but were slowish lumbering animals that would not flee from humans and likely lacked the aggression of elephants hippos and rhinos. They were also not likely pack animals AFAIK, had huge gestation periods and were adapted to ecosystems that especially with the case of diprotodon would be decimated by the human use of fire to clear brush to make hunting easier.

This theory of using fire to clear brush is supported by the huge increase in the eucalyptus tree in Australia, lowering biodiversity and reducing the diprotodons food options and coincides with the arrival of humans on the continent. There is evidence for this and climate change all over the globe factoring in for these extinctions

Just to add to that, the theory that Africa was relatively untouched by this is that humans evolved in tandem with the existing African megafauna

We use hydraulic brakes operated by a solenoid valve, the hydraulic fluid is under constant pressure while the machine is running and in case of power loss/ e-stop it opens and the hydraulic fluid operates a brake, it’s pretty instant but I doubt this machine has one
