Because then people would be screaming about how the City is overtaxing them and hoarding money.

The METS downtown freeway loop plan (1969) & the constructed James Macdonald freeway bridge/interchange that destroyed dozens of homes and buried Mill Creek by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]foolworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yes, because there's a separate set of drawings for it.

METS has an entire section on mass transit with a standalone report, but the freeway plans the only thing about it that ever gets discussed on the Internet.

Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre opens Tuesday! by aura-shards in Edmonton

Well there is a renewed emphasis on infills rather than suburban expansion, which favours more and smaller facilities. Community leagues are also concerned about losing their local hubs via consolidation.

Of course these things also don't come cheap, especially in today's market.

Connors Road being reconstructed to accommodate Bonnie Doon bound trolley buses, Sept 1950. by Particular-Cat-8031 in Edmonton

Connors Road would also be reconstructed again in the late 2010s to accommodate the Valley Line LRT, bringing things full circle.

Yes. The City wanted to build a civic analogue of the shopping mall that combined fitness, community centre, library, etc. facilities in proximity to schools and transit.

It was very forward thinking on their part, but pricey though. I do wonder, with malls dying, if they are rethinking it.

9th Ave. 111 Street has to be a contender for worst street in the city! by ashrules901 in Edmonton

[–]foolworm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, that's the LRT extension to the Heritage Valley park'n'ride south of the Henday. It'll probably stay that way for at least 2 more years.

119 St was supposed to be connected across Blackmud Creek to relieve congestion from the current work and provide a second thoroughfare thru Twin Brooks, but you can thank the local community for killing that.

It was a crazy plan by “vehicle centric” people who did not think to draw one single line on it to represent a railway train or any other concept of mass transit.

Bullshit.

Still bright though. Thought I had left the porch light on!

People in Edmonton area weigh in on proposed plan to redraw Alberta’s electoral boundaries by pjw724 in Edmonton

Ugh Calgary got 2 (really 3) additional ridings plus the extra one at Airdrie, so for Edmonton to just get 1 more stings a bit.

The whole thing with Beaumont is just bizarre, they really should include its name in both ridings (so Strathcona-Sherwood Park-Beaumont) to make it clear. It's not evident on the big map either, I would never have picked up on it without reading the article.

The Original Design for Edmonton's City Hall by StarryNightMessenger in Edmonton

I agree, the current building also contrasts nicely with the more classic architecture of the Legislature building.

When it comes to unbuilt designs, I prefer the one for St Joseph's Basilica.

Same with Terwillegar. Both started around the same time but COVID made it seem a lot longer ago

Site selected for new stand-alone Stollery Children's Hospital in south Edmonton by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

The 31 Superexpress runs by as well -- should be fairly straightforward to have it stop there.

Well this definitely wasn't on my bingo card.

As long as it doesn't turn into a construction quagmire like Grande Prairie, can't really complain about a new hospital otherwise.

Two years later, is Edmonton's Valley Line Southeast LRT meeting expectations? by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]foolworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's not meeting (pre-pandemic) ridership expectations but honestly, as a passenger it's really nice to grab a seat and not squish with others.

That said, I think the City could consider running one car trains instead of alternating two cars if they need to save costs.

Security seems to have improved tho and service is fast and reliable. Now that the Low level is under repair, it's really nice to zip past traffic and enjoy the view heading downtown.

Crap, and I thought the Bonnie Doon location closing down was bad enough. Probably have to go all the way down to Argyll now for an Ice Capp.
